What is it with these GTT's? I feel as if we should start a new thread called due in Jan 06 and the curse of the GTT! Everyone seems to be developing gestational diabetes. I've got an ante-natal check today, and I'm fully expecting to be sent for one too, if everyone else on here is anything to go by!

What else? Gorgeous sunny day here , think I'll take Bella for a walk by the river after I drop dd at school. Got tons of washing to do (where does it all come from?), but the first lot is in the machine, so that's good.

Also will have to make a dental appt - really don't want to, as I've got toothache under a big crown, but must.

Think I've decided NOT to use a pool for my home birth after all - I think I'll want to be more mobile, and would end up with water everywhere with keep getting in and out of the pool, so I'm quite relieved not to have to bother to order one etc. Dh was worried that we wouldn't have enough hot water to fill it up either, as we don't have a combi boiler. Anyone else planning on using a pool?

Iris

Thanks for the good wishes re. a cold, but it wasn't me - I think it may have been Georgie, but not sure. I do get blocked nose sometimes, but I think that's more to do with hormones or allergies. So far during this pg I've been incredibly healthy, only one day off sick from work, and that was due to lots of leg cramps in the night. Having said that, I'll probably be sunk low with some lurgy or other before too long!

Have a good day y'all, and hoping for more posts soon!

sweetkitty · 07/11/2005 09:18

morning fingers crossed but I've not been cursed with a GTT as yet.

Sunny day here today but v cold may take DD out for a walk later. Sis in law and nieces were here for the weekend so DP and I took the opportunity and went to the cinema on Saturday, we saw Saw 2 very gory horror film (DPs choice) then had lovely Chinese meal. Nice evening although I thought I would be trendy and wear some hihg heeled boots, DP nearly had to carry me home my feet were so sore. Trainers next time I think!

Tickle · 07/11/2005 10:03

Hi all - feeling better, but wondering with all these GTTs whether my blood sugar might be a bit off - maybe that brought on the migraine? At a-n checks here you have to be organised enough to get to the chemist, buy a sample bottle, then remember to take it with you...

I, of course, have only managed to do this once, and the midwife had said, 'oh, you only need to buy one, just rinse & reuse', but the blimmin doctor threw it away. Result is I have no idea where my glucose levels are !!

Felt v hormonal & weepy yesterday - think I'm actually a bit homesick! We've been here over 18 mths now, and the language is hard to learn. Trying hard today to do things to take my mind off it, and got dd1's teacher coming for annual 'home visit' later - dh was supposed to be here, but was called this morning to be a supply teacher at the school... so won't be here. Missed it last year too.

Rachey - just listening to the radio & they're talking about a labrador called Hector (funnily enough) who swallowed it's owner's bell (collector's item apparently). They didn't know where it had gone til the dog started to chime when settling down into bed! Reminded me both of your Billy & Captain Hook's crocodile

Made a blind for the bathroom yesterday... nothing fancy, just calico on a couple of willow sticks, but better than the horrid venetian thing that has been there gathering dust since we moved in. So now just lots of painting to do...

will just pop to yahoo to check out the latest photos - that should cheer me up a bit

lyra41 · 07/11/2005 11:10

Hi Tickle

Sorry to hear you're feeling a bit glum and homesick. Hope it eases off soon. Is your dh Danish? Are the children fluent in both languages now? It must be great to be able to give them a bilingual start in life - supposed to be very good for brain development, makes them flexible divergent thinkers I believe!
So your dh is a vet AND a supply teacher! Wow! He's very flexible too eh? What does he teach? Science I guess. I bet your dd loves it when he comes into her school.

morning all! - Beautiful day isn't it? - well, it is here - wall to wall sunshine and a nice sharp feel to the air.

Lyra you are so brave going to the dentists! I broke a back tooth in half 4 months ago(on an olive would you believe!) and still haven't gone to our butcher woman (am such a wimp). Keep meaning to change dentists but as there's no chance of getting registered with an NHS dentist round here I'll have to pay full whack so am leaving it as long as poss.

Good idea about the GTT thread - may just suggest one to hunkermunker (hosp appt today as she failed hers too) so we can all compare & give moral support (and so we don't bore you to death!!

Sorry you're feeling blue Tickle (((((cyber hug)))) small compensation but you've still got us though ! It could very well be sugar related - I was feeling really low when I wasn't eating properly (sending sugar levels all over the place with too many sweet snacks) but it didn't dawn on me until I'd started looking after myself just how much my mood has changed now. I'd be inclined to speak to your MW or Dr just to be on the safe side.

Shame your DH isn't going to be there but I think that's the nature of (most) DH's commitments isn't it. I've been on my own to all but 2 of DDs parents' evenings.

Sweetkitty - don't know how you can watch horror films! I just can't abide them anymore (age thing? -- oooh am realising just how much of a wimp I really have become ) DD went to see Saw and I felt ill just hearing about it!

Off to take Milliemoo for a bracing walk before hitting the ironing pile again (it's breeding I'm sure!) Have a good day all & enjoy the sunshine. x

ooh grr, I can't find my a-n notes, and I've got an appointment later. I've spent agaes looking, and then I was just about to go for a swim before the appt and the car battery's flat! I'm thwarted on all sides. I suppose I'll just have to sit down and do that paperwork I've been putting off since last week.

Hope you're all having a better day than me!

Rachey1969 · 07/11/2005 14:46

Hi all, Huuuuge post alert!

Monday morning again, only 6 weeks in work and counting? Had a very lazy weekend, the weather was foul here on Saturday so no fireworks, spent most of the day either in bed or in the bath with the barefoot doctor?s ?orgasmic bath oil?- lovely!

Lyra ? thanks for Tesco codes ? really useful! Got my Boots stuff too, free no7 face serum (£17), free Boots Mediterranean bath milk (£5), free avent goodies, free Soltan shimmery fake tan (£7) and a free changing bag/mat (when you buy a pack of huggies newborn). Well worth it! Felt really broody walking round the baby stuff. Also bought myself a (reduced) pair of fake eyelashes with diamante? (why, I have no idea?! To go with the shimmery tan I suppose!).

Re: working tax credits, I could go on for ever about them and how incompetent the inland revenue are (there are probably loads of threads on it) but suffice to say if your household income is between about 22K and 55K you will get the minimum, which for 3 kids is about £50 a month. We will get more next year for having a child under 1 (double that for an older child). Childcare costs are more complicated again. I recommend that you go online and fill in your details ? you will then get an indication of how much you would receive. You don?t have to actually apply or give any names etc. The website is: www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/qualify. Anyone else working in the UK should have a look too.

I got the psp from Game in the end - £179.99 which is the going rate. It is a lot of money and my usual limit is £100 for everything for each child but this is for ds1 birthday and with money from my mum/grandma etc. Anyone else overcompensating for the new arrival? I think Sony are deliberately rationing them to increase desirability and demand and it is working! I don?t think the price will drop after xmas as they are so new but you might get a better deal on a bundle with games etc. Have a look for online stock availability with all the major retailers on www.psp-deals.co.uk - I signed up for email alerts which let me know when one was in stock ? or you can pre-order (with a few retailers - you can always cancel if you get one).

Iris, they do another website for ipods: www.ipod-deals.co.uk and it looks like there are black ones on there ? too many varieties for me to understand! Again, you can pre-order or get an email alert when one is in stock.

Georgie ? this baby poked me so hard with a limb that I actually put a hand over it to try and push it back in ? I thought he was trying to break out a la Aliens! I?m using bio-oil from the chemist, supposed to be good for scar tissue/stretchmarks, heres hoping!

Sweetkitty ? was Saw2 watchable? I?ve seen Saw and it really was gruesome but so over the top that a little detached from reality IYKWIM.

Tickle ? the vet told me he?d taken a credit card out of a lab last week! Sorry you're feeling down, we are here to talk to!

By the way, when should we start taking raspberry leaf? I?ve never done it before and is it better to take tea or tablets?

iris66 · 07/11/2005 15:07

Hi Rachey - v over your boots stuff as I still haven't got mine. Phoned up this morning (chip in the card won't work & I wanted a new one) & they said parening stuff could be another 4 weeks!!!
Thanks for tip over iPods. Was looking for them on the cheap but clearly it's £179 or nowt so have ordered one from the Apple site. Just hope it gets here for DDs birthday on Thurs (and yes, this is pure guilt as I wouldn't normally spend so much on her - foolish I'm sure, but I know she's not going to complain )

Seem to remember Sweetkitty saying that raspberry leaf is best after 34 weeks and that it tastes vile (have got tabs instead but it's 5 weeks before I can start them).

OP posts:
Tickle · 07/11/2005 15:18

missed plot on whole raspberry leaf thing - what is it supposed to do for me??

Still weepy, but think I will do as Iris suggests & speak to the MW tomorrow...

about being able to wander round Boots at will! Mind you, when I'm not feeling glum, which is most of the time, I love being here and the deserted snady beaches & quiet roads more than make up for lack of interesting shops. (See... even Boots is interesting when you live in the mid of nowhere!)

Thanks for kind thoughts everyone

Tickle · 07/11/2005 15:20

that'll be sandy beaches

iris66 · 07/11/2005 15:50

Tickle - (((((more hugs)))) Just talking about it helped me loads (did it on here too). Glad you're going to MW and hope it passes soon. Raspberry leaf apparently helps to tone the uterine muscles btw.
Your sandy beaches sound wonderful (personally I hate wandering round the shops - especially since discovering the joy of internet shopping!!)

OP posts:
iris66 · 07/11/2005 15:52

sorry peeps I seem to have verbal runs today (have been home alone - can you tell?)

OP posts:
lyra41 · 07/11/2005 16:40

Hello all

no apologies for the verbal diarrhoea from me! u can always ignore me.

a-n appt went well, apart from the lack of notes, and met a lovely mw who's coming to do my next
a-n at home to book me in for the home birth. she also measured my fundus, and apparently ds2 is the right size for 35 wks! I think he's going to be a woppa, like ds1 was (and is).

I'm tired out now, and the kitchen's a rite state, piles of stuff everywhere, where are the elves to sort it out when you need them?

Thankfully Mum called round for a coffee this am and brought a pot of hot pot for tea, so at least I don't have to cook.

iris66 · 07/11/2005 20:40

Owwwwwwwww - bump all solid and soooo achey

I've just finished a client (one that I'd had to cancel last week when DD was ill) and thought I'd be fine doing an evening appointment as it was "only" and indian head massage - but an hour stood up having BH is not v pleasant I've decided. And the noises that my guts were making !! They were so loud that even I thought I'd got really bad wind

Lyra - how come you're not being sent for GTT if babe is so big? (not fair at all!! stamps foot in style of toddler - can I come and live near you?)

OP posts:
Rachey1969 · 08/11/2005 10:00

Poor Tickle, I've been here for 15 years and still miss 'home' although it's only 200(?) miles away. I really miss having family here (especially mum) for support. Dp's parents couldn't be better but of course they are not hte other kids' family.

Iris - sorry about your GTT rsult, what a bummer. I've never had to have one before (despite 3 biggish babes), it must be different policies/procedures.

sweetkitty · 08/11/2005 10:23

morning all just catching up on all the posts - wow!

Iris - depending on what you read you are not supposed to take raspberry leaf tea before 33 to 35 weeks as it could start premature labour then other websites say it will not send you into labour if you are not ready. I think it is supposed to tone your uterine muscles so that each contraction does a bit more. I bought 2 bottles of the dried stuff from Holland and Barratt last time still have one left with a best before of end Jan 06 so will be taking that - "every little helps" thats what I think anyway, I dilated 1cm to 10cm in less than 3 hours last time very painful though!

I think I signed up for the Boots stuff too never heard anything about it though

Just waiting for Tescos to arrive (thanks for the codes) and DD is giving me heart failure as she has decided to stand on her little playcart thing now instead of sit on it.

Pouring with rain here might stay in all day .

My bump is high and firm too feels very squashed in there, really difficult getting comfy in bed now turned over last night and heard pelvis crack!

Eshay · 08/11/2005 10:29

Hi all,

I've just come back from a trip to Holland over the weekend. It was great to see my parents one last time before the arrival of baby in January. We drove (took the car on the train through the Eurotunnel) and I was quite pleased that I didn't get too sore etc. I have, however, taken an axtra day off work today as I am just exhausted. No naps and entertaining a 16 month-old in the car is just a bit too much for me at the mo. So I'm happily doing some washing and cleaning today - enjoying my time at home while DS is at nursery. What luxury!

I think the procedures for GTT are different for every hospital. I had mine done a few weeks ago (due to large baby 1st pg) and I was in and out in about an hour, results in hand! They had given me the glucose drink to prepare and have at home so all I had to do was have my blood taken 2 hours later. The hospital lab tested it within an hour so we waited around for it. Luckily my levels were fine. Sorry you failed yours, Iris. And all those other people too! I can't believe how many people seem to be having this problem.
Tickle, you mentioned about not having your urine checked but if you think there might be a problem I would def. insist on a blood test. It seems the urine tests don't always provide clear proof that you don't have gest. DB. Why else would they send people like me for a blood test when all urine tests last time and this time were clear?

Rachey, I wish Asda did mum and baby stickers. Our Asda has quite afew baby parks and toddler parks as well but I swear there's always people in them without a bump, baby or toddler. Sometimes I feel like waiting by a car without a car seat and telling these people off when they come back. Of course I never have... A sticker would be great!

Lyra, I don't know too much about tax credits, sorry. I did apply for the childcare voucher scheme when I finihed my Mat Lv last time. They seem to work okay but I had to cancel mine again because I was pregnant again. Not that you have to cancel them because you're pg, but it will affect your Mat. Pay if you don't. I'll sign up again in July, when I return to work.
I have not had any experience in a birthing pool but really wanted to for DS' birth. The hospital had some great pools but I never got to go in because I was being monitored and you can't very well hop in the water with all this equipment round your tummy. In the end I had a C-section so now I definitely can't have a pool birth. I'll be hooked up with various beeping belts again... I can understand you have decided against a pool in your home, though. I'm not sure I would want one in my lounge either. But of course there's always the shower or the bath. Not for the actual birth of course but I'm sure it can help immensely with pain relief.

Speaking of pain relief, I just bought a sticky pad for menstrual pains. They were new to me (at Boots). I asked my MW if it would be ok to use during labour and she couldn't see any problems with it. It's just a heat pad that sticks to your skin (I hope it does, anyway) so you don't have to hold a hot water bottle or DH's hands there all the time (that was the only role my DH got to play last time, putting his hands on my belly).

Hope everyone is having a good week.

No have only browsed for the last week, a friend told me about the site. I am married 7 years living in watford, work part-time for my hubby doing his paperwork, he is an Electrician. My little girls at morning nursery, shes fantastic. This time its just been lots of worry the only thing I've found tough is the presure she pushing down so early! I don't remember that with the first?!? Feel like a cow girl

Eshay · 08/11/2005 15:39

Hi Sarah and welcome to the thread. It's great that your friend told you about 'us'. With my first pg I didn't know about mumsnet and I would have loved the chance to chat about everything I was feeling and experiencing.
This is my 2nd pg too. I have a 16 month old boy called Thomas and this next one is a boy too. We live in Farnborough, Hampshire but we are from the Netherlands (me) and NZ (DH).
Glad things are going a bit better and your baby is growing again.

sweetkitty · 08/11/2005 17:56

hi Sarah I'm a Sarah too

Welcome to mumsnet I discovered it during my first pregnancy and it has been an absolute godsend (although a curse at times as it is very addictive and you get nothing else done in the day)

I even had a thread entitled "Help - is this my waters breaking?" yes it was and DD was born 4 hours later!

This is my second baby another little girl, I'm 30 I live in near Glasgow with my DP and DD who's now 15 mo (will be nearly 18 mo when DD2 is born).

Rachey1969 · 08/11/2005 19:42

Welcome Sarah we're not scary at all! As well as the pics on Yahoo we also have a vital stats thread (due jan 2006 - also under antenatal clubs) I'd put a link but I don't know how! This is my fourth... (ds1 11, ds2 9, dd 7) and I only found mumsnet this time whilst browsing on google.
