Hi

No snow for us yet , but still hopeful.

a very quiet nite in so far. dd and ds are both out at friends' for tea, so I've had some crackers and hummus in front of the telly, and a glass of cider, watching Richard and Judy. very exciting!!!! not.

all set to change soon when dd will be bringing 2 friends home for a sleepova, altho' they've promised to be sensible and settle down at a reasonable hour. Yeah right.

Ds has recovered sufficiently to be going out tonite to the school production of Grease! so he won't be here to drive the girls mad.

I've built a very cosy fire in the hearth, so I'm hoping to watch something entertaining but undemanding on TV - any suggestions?

hunkermunker · 26/11/2005 00:46

Iris, there's a thread here about antenatal expressing of colostrum - I'm going to do it too

Don't try pumping it - tiny amounts will get lost in the pump - hand expressing's better. And don't start before 36 weeks - you might go into labour!

Haven't had a chance to read much of the thread - and really should be in bed!

I'm OK - baby breech, GD sort of under control (have discovered I can't eat white rice, white pasta or white bread - which wasn't a surprise(!) - but brown rice is OK, wholemeal pasta's just about OK and I can eat potatoes which has made me very happy!). Midwife says the baby's a good size already, but she was pleased my blood pressure wasn't high as because I have GD, it's something they watch for.

Right, going to bed now - need to get toasty! Have to investigate something warm to wear as my coat doesn't fit me any more and it's FREEZING and getting colder!

Hope you all have good weekends!

lyra41 · 26/11/2005 08:07

horrible nite of cramp and tossing and turning lasat nite. Even my supper of banana and (delicious) prune activia yoghurt didn't help. oh well, I'm up now, and a day of too much activity is ahead. Dh is away, which means I get to do the taxi service bit, taking dd and her friends to basketball followed by swimming, and then if I'm lucky and nothing has run over schedule, I get to go to ante-natal yoga, which will be great, a real calm oasis in a busy day.

Dreamed about the baby last nite, he was about 3 months old, very cute and quiet, with big blue eyes. woke up from the same dream very upset that I'd missed the anniversary of my dad's death AND his birthday, and not taken any flowers to his grave. I haven't, it's not till Feb, but I haven't been for ages, I think I'll take some flowers anyway, and have a chat with him about the new baby.

iris66 · 26/11/2005 08:38

Sorry you had a rough night Lyra - especially as you'd planned such a lovely relaxed evening (mind you, that's probably why!!) I love dreaming about my baby too. Had one a couple of weeks ago that was like an excerpt from the Simpsons with the baby wearing a rhinestoned jacket and having a quiff (DH had made a comment about the baby having a disco in my tum as he was being excessively boistrous one evening!) Amazing what your mind picks up on isn't it!!

Hunkermunker - thanks for the link. I was getting concerned as you'd not been posting. Glad your GD is settling down - mine's a bit haywire again.

On the coat front - I'm having the same problem but am sticking to huge long cardis and woolly scarves/wraps over the top (wish I could find my gloves though - put "safely away" over the summer -in an unlabelled box, now in the loft no doubt )

Snow has practically gone here btw so no snowman making for us this w/e. Have all my family coming to stay though which is going to be great. We all get together for a pre-christmas meal every year and this year it's our turn to accommodate everyone (plus dogs!)& arrange the meal/transport etc. Just hope I can find the lead to charge my camera to take loads of snaps.

Anyway - operation houseclean beckons so I'd better get my backside into gear! Hope you all have lovely weekends iris x

Quiet day on the thread....Always is on a Saturday tho isn't it. Family time i guess. I've given myself indigestion wolfing a packet of salt n vinegar crisps before lunch, and regretted it ever since. i've been too lazy to go upstairs for the gaviscon, but i'll be heading that way soon.

Just managed to buy a lime bumbo for £10 on another website similar to this. Feel very pleased as they are very dear usually, and overpriced imho, althou the design is very clever.
The website's called netmums if anyone's interested, and it's divided into regions, which is handy when it comes to buying things and picking them up; saves postage.

GeorginaP · 27/11/2005 12:25

Hi there. Operation DIY for DH and Operartion house clean for me today. DD with her dad so at least I get a clear stretch of time to do stuff.

No snow down here. Although on Thurs afternoon I swear we had a mini tornado. Have never seen such strong wind. Only lasted for about 2 mins. All rather weird.

Just sorting out last bits and peices in the house and then we've promised ourselves that we won't do anymore DIY for at least a year. Staff at Homebase know us by name now!

Lyra - sorry to hear about restless nights. I'm a huge fan of Horlicks now. That seems to knock me out. Although did have rather strange dream last night about Liz Hurley and James Martin (tv chef from Come Dancing) which then turned into one about me and my brother climbing up and down ladders...... go figure?!?!?

Iris - hope things continue to look up for you. Can totally understand agony of being kicked in cervix. It's like nothing on earth! Hope you get at least a little bit of the birth you want. Seems so unfair that you're constricted by what other people think you should be doing.....

We drove up and down to Cumbria on Friday/Saturday. DH mum v ill with breast cancer. There's nothing they can do for her. Such a sad situation. DH incredibly upset. We're just hoping that she hangs on long enough to be able to see Beany. Am so upset for DH. He's had a tough time with his parents and this is just another blow. Just want to hug him all the time.

For those with GD, Thorntons do lovely diabetic chocs and sweets. Think you might even be able to order online.

OK, can't hide in here any longer.....

Hope everyone having a great weekend.

G xx

Tickle · 27/11/2005 19:35

just signing in quickly - hello! Still alive after a frantic weekend with the Christmas fair. Very successful, but I can hardly stand up!

So off to the sofa with dh for a bit of telly. Luxury! And not a mince pie in sight...

Lyra what's a lime bumbo? Sounds a bit like a cocktail from the deep south??!

lyra41 · 28/11/2005 07:17

Hi Tickle

Mmm a lime bumbo does sound rather delicious when you put it like that, but actually it's a seat, specially designed so that as soon as they can sit up properley, about 6 months I guess, a baby can sit in it without any straps and can't get out. It looks a bit like a potty, but it's a seat. They cost a fortune new, I think they're a new-ish design, so I'm glad to have got one cheaply second hand. I'm a bit of a sucker for gadgets and new design. They look like this

www.mothercare.com/invt/lt1932

Tickle what do you watch on TV in Denmark? Do you get good programmes? We watched the film Bagdad Cafe last nite, it came free in the newspaper, and it was good on the whole, but with a very slow start.

I've got more acupuncture planned for today, but I'm hoping to have a shorter session so it will be cheaper, as £30 a go is a bit much.

Dh is back from his weekend away I'm glad to say. Ds was something of a challenge this weekend without his dad around to back me up. I blame a surge of testosterone or something, very teenage and argumentative. At least when they're this age you can just leave them to their bad moods and go into another room, which is what I've done now. He woke up cross that all his school uniform seems to have shrunk, in actual fact I think he's grown by about an inch last week, so now his trousers are too short. We'll have to go and get some more later.

Still no snow for us, it seems to have passed Manchester by for now .

Starving hungry all of a sudden, so I'll say goodbye for the moment. Laters.

iris66 · 28/11/2005 09:06

morning all! Hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Sorry to hear of your MIL Georgie. It must be a really diggicult time for you both especially with the conflicting emotions you must have with excitement over the new baby but sadness over her illness.

Tickle - glad your Christmas fair went well - bet you'd be glad never to make another mince pie again!! I'm off with a girlfriend to mooch round one of the big garden centres, that has a huge Christmas thing going on, later and I can't wait.
When do you close down for Christmas? (not that I suppose you can, not completely anyway, with all the animals & critters to look after etc.

Lyra - it's a pain when the DH goes away isn't it. Mine works away for weeks at a time and it can get very frustrating. Love the look of the bumbos but they look like they'd squash their legs once they got a bit chunky don't they!(well, obviously they don't or they wouldn't sell them!) TY for the tip on netmums btw, it's always handy to have different places to mooch isn't it.

Talking of lime, I found a recipe in a mag yesterday for a carrot cake with lime mascarpone frosting, but apparently is works really well if you use raw beetroot instead of carrot! I'm going to make one later (and can't wait to see what a fab colour it will be) so I'll let you know if it tastes different.

Had a fab weekend having all my family to stay. We went out for a meal on Sat, which was great - apart from the fact that none of the food came with veg (it had to be ordered separately and the dopey waitress never mentioned it when we ordered!!) My little brother (35) was a bit freaked out when he felt the baby kick - he'd never felt one before so his reaction was hysterical. It was only a gentle one too!! lol Though we get together as much as we can, I do wish we all lived nearer to each other.hey ho!

Anyway - best go and get dressed. will report back re the cake once I've made it!

Having a lazy day today... dd1 and ds at home, as both coughing lots. dd1 has a school play this afternoon, so hope she will feel well enough to go in for that.

Georgie very sorry to hear about your MIL - sounds like it's a fairly new diagnosis, is it? Must be awful. Hope she is able to hang on for beany - my grandmother did when dd1 was born - I think it gave her something to aim for. Thinking of you and dh & family.

Lyra thanks for the link... now I can see why it's called a bumbo

We are now officially closed at Rosendal til the spring, which is nice. Will have to keep going up to feed animalls etc, but luckily cold blooded things slow down in winter so don't need attention every day

Off to eat some comfort food now with the kids!

Rachey1969 · 28/11/2005 12:13

Hi everyone, a very quick quickie to say hi as I am rushing to get train - am in London tomorrow and Bristol Wed, hopefully not too stressful, just a couple of workshops to run, plenty of 5* food(lovely hotels) and a chance for some adult conversation! If anyone expects me to do any serious work I shall push out my bump and look pathetic! Feel very lucky to only have to do these events.

Had an awful night with panicky dreams about everything from work to cars to WW2 to babies! Even water giving me heartburn at the mo! I shouldn't moan though, at least I don';t have GD or a cervical stitch!

So sorry to hear about your MIL Georgie, I hope she makes it to see baby. Hope everyone keeps well this week. Speak to you later in the week!

sweetkitty · 28/11/2005 12:20

hi all hope everyone is doing ok

Georgina - sorry to hear about your MIL, what a horrid time for something like this to happen (not that there is ever a good time).

Tickle - enjoy your well earned rest, what kind of animals do you have I'm intrigued now???

Snow all gone here but it's still very cold, been food shopping this morning, think it will be my last time for a big food shop on my own really found it difficult. DD is an angel though she loves shopping and has to wave at everyone in the store. Shopping online for us now I think.

Also bought some newborn Pampers and some sanitary towels today, found that very scary don't know why. Next week my task is to start packing my hospital bag even though I want a homebirth I will have to go to hospital if I go into labour before 39 weeks. DP has also sorted out with his sister to be DD's nominated adult when the time comes so she will come and look after DD for us whatever happens.

Need to order the pram this week too but am having my usual can't decide thing. It's so difficult isn't it.

This weeks tasks include spring cleaning the living room for the decorations going up including washing all sofa cushions which are covered in chocolate from DD's little fingers. Also going to finish Christmas shopping so I can be all smug.

Well I'm off now sorry for the ramble.

lyra41 · 28/11/2005 16:52

Hello again

Abortive trip for the bumbo, can't believe how dumb I was! I got the directions from the aa autoroute website - fine, followed them without any problems, but then when I got there I realised I'd forgotten to bring the address or phone no!!! I was in the right postcode, but had no idea which house to go to. Arrgh, what a pea brain. I'll try again another day.

One of the women from our nct class had her baby today, so congratulations to Kylie and Rob! They had a 9lb baby girl, with a 5 hour labour, sounds very reasonable for a first baby. Gives hope to us all I'd say. No more details than that so far, but I think everything went well.

GeorginaP · 28/11/2005 19:21

Hi Guys

Just a quickie to say thanks for all your kind wishes. And also thanks for advice re: DD and her dad's new baby. I am sure she'll be fine and it'll be me that's a nervous wreck waiting for her show some kind of 'reaction'!

Also, anyone got ANY ideas/suggestions/advice on how to cope with acid reflux. Have cut out anything acidie, take Gaviscon/Rennnie/Rapeze at regular intervals..... but am still in much discomfort and am vomming once or twice a day. Feels as if I've got an acid ball stuck in my throat and food gets lodged there and won't go down, so comes back up....!

Iris - is there anything natural I can take? Or maybe accupuncture points?

Better go and eat.

G xx

lyra41 · 28/11/2005 20:02

Hi Georgie

sorry to hear about your mil, my thoughts are with you, and really hope she can hang on to see beany too.

also sorry about your acid reflux, sounds dreadful. i have found that fizzy pop helps, altho it shouldn't as it is acidic. dandelion and burdock does it for me, and coke for other people. i think a lot of it is to do with baby's position at this stage, so maybe trying to move baby might help. My yoga teacher suggested kneeling down with knees open (so bump can reach floor), head on hands to start with, then put one foot at the side of your hands, and do forwards and backwards movements, or side to side if it's not painful (not if you've got spd), round and round with the hips (again only if it's not painful). This is supposed to help mobilise the baby and may help him / her to drop down into your pelvis a little and away from your stomach. hth.

Rachey

are you still able to take the omega 3 capsules? i'm really struggling as my indigestion seems to be worse now (but still not too bad) and i can't stand burping up fishy flavours! i'm trying to remember to take them just before bed, as i don't seem to get reflux then.

Chuffed · 29/11/2005 09:07

Just checking in - so sorry to hear about MIL Georgie.
Not a lot of help on the acid reflux thing I'm afraid as mine seemed to last about a week and has vanished, the positioning thing seems to make a bit of sense though.
Have been dealing with a fair bit of our own stress at the moment it looks like we won't be in our house by Christmas and probably not until after the baby is born so it means living out of suitcases pretty much for over 6mths and impacting on all of dh's family as the house is full now without another addition. The only good thing is the support after the c-section as I won't be at home by myself with a toddler and dd is quite settled here so it won't be as much of a transition for her but it is still incredibly stressful.

sweetkitty · 29/11/2005 12:04

Aww chuffed sorry to hear you won't be in your own home for a while but at least as you say you will have plenty of hands to help out.

Acid reflux driving me insane now as well, had about a box of Rennie Rapeze yesterday before starting on the dreaded Gaviscon. This pelvic pain is really getting me down now, it has moved round the front now as well so my whole pelvis/hips/tailbone area is very sore. You don't get a lot of sympathy either as everyone thinks it's just normal backpain. DP asks how I am and I say sore he says you've been sore for months kind of loses the momentum after a while

Anyway not long to go now, went to mother and toddlers again today introducing DD to the babies she was quite good with them but kept trying to give them toys (throwing them at the babies) so it's going to be fun trying to keep DD2 out her way.

Tickle · 29/11/2005 19:23

Georgie - on the acid reflux... are you getting it all day? My dh says that taking alkaline stuff Gaviscon etc, will make the stomach just produce more acid to compensate... so it's a bit of a vicious circle. So it might be better to avoid the regular intervals, and only take them when it is acute, to neutralise the acid that has "spilled". But if you have it constantly, then this suggestion won't help and you should ignore me Just hope you get some relief cos it sounds awful.

Chuffed, nice to hear from you. We spent our honeymoon staying in dh's parents' house, and the thing I find most frustrating is that you have to be on your toes constantly... it is so tiring when you feel you can't just slob out on the sofa and say, I'll clear up in the morning! Good luck

Tickle · 29/11/2005 19:38

Sorry, got interrupted there... was going to add that I didn't even have any children then! But dh's parents must adore having dd around, and it's lovely that she has settled in so well. Try to take advantage of the inhouse babysitting before bump lands

Sweetkitty - now we mostly have water animals... fish and crayfish in aquaria etc. So they don't take much looking after! The place is designed to show people what exists here in the wild, so we have pike and stickleback, that kind of thing. And masses of water bugs of various shapes & sizes, but they just arrive and take care of themselves.

Hope everyone feels better soon with reflux & aches & pains. Just fixed the heating in our bedroom - yay!! So I might have an early night and read in bed See you xx

lyra41 · 29/11/2005 21:37

Evening all

Had my first ante-natal check without a 100% clean bill of health. Nothing serious though, just a bit anaemic (11) and some protein in my urine. Blood pressure ok though, and no swelling, so just need to increase iron rich food and wait for results of urine test. I think it'll be nothing though.

Last week at work for me. Hoorah! Really looking forward to not having to drive there in the rush hour, and to taking life more slowly. Especially to regular naps in the day, as my sleep at nite is still pretty bad. I get so hot and sweaty, the mw reckons it's hormonal, a bit like hot flushes I think.

Another friend from the nct class had her baby today, a boy called Barnaby Edward, 7lb 1oz and a fairly quick labour I think, as I was talking to her about 12 noon yesterday and she was planning to go out for lunch! Seems like the babies have started to pop now, I wish mine would! I don't hold out much hope though, with my record of overdue babies 1 and 2.

I'm beginning to nest a bit now, I'm noticing that the bathroom is very dusty at the top of the room. I want it properley dusted from top to bottom, and the bed pulled out and all the fluff hoovered out. I don't mind if someone else does it for me though .

Horlicks and bed are calling, after Making Slough Happy - anyone else watching?

Chuffed · 29/11/2005 23:41

Thanks for the well wishes will keep you informed of any good news on the house front. I'm pretty lucky really as dh's parents are great and haven't been funny about the mess or anything that dd is leaving everywhere. I think they are just so glad to have us back in the country that they are fine with normal life going out the window. We are certainly making use of in house babysitters.
Sweetkitty I was reading somewhere on here with other toddlers it is easier to get a playpen and put the baby in it so then the toddler can run around and be toddlerish but the baby is safe. Am keeping that advise in the back of my mind anyway. I count myself so lucky not to have ongoing soreness, people don't comprehend the pain/ongoing awkwardness that also comes with it as you can't do things when pregnant at the best of times net alone the worst.
Will sign off hope the test comes back ok lyra.

sweetkitty · 30/11/2005 10:27

Morning all was about to take DD into Glasgow to do some Christmas shopping and get some baby things but discovered her pram is sopping wet {sad] don't know where it has come from so will be drying that out today instead!

Chuffed - my plan is to use a travel cot as DD2's safety pen. I really don't think DD1 would hurt her intentionally just try and "give" her toys to play with.

Tickle - totally sympathise with the acid reflux every time I burp it's horrid. I find sipping milk helps a little bit as well.

Lyra - enjoy your last week at work.

I have the midwife coming tomorrow to talk to me about "home confinement" confinement seems such an old fashioned way of describing it, not like I'm being confined just having a baby at home. Anyway nice quiet day for me then.

GeorginaP · 30/11/2005 10:49

Morning all.

How's everyone's aches and pains?

Tickle - thanks for the advice re: over producing acid. I wouldn't be suprised if that's what was happening. Will try your suggestion. Am open to anything at the moment.

Chuffed - sorry to hear about the house. That's gotta suck. But at least you get on with your in-laws. And there's a couple of extra pairs of hands to help out with the bambino!

SK - how's your bum/back/hip pain? Sounds dreadful. And you can't even numb it with alcohol or painkillers! And great idea about using travel cot as playpen...was wondering what to do with DD old one.

Lyra - bet you're looking forward to finishing work. Now you can (hopefully) get some time to yourself. And thumbs up for clean ante natal check.

Am coming to the end of my nesting thing I think. Just got a bloke in this morning to clean the carpets and a rug that smells suspiciously like damp dog when anything gets split on it .

About 6 weeks left for me. And hopefully only another 2 weeks until this stitch gets taken out....yippeeee.

We've got 2nd Parentcraft class his arvo. Got thoroughly told off last week by the physio for suggesting that you could bathe your new baby in the kitchen sink..... she really ripped into me. Went v red and said that it had never hurt DD. Am going to try and keep mouth shut this week. Although bit hard as other mums are first timers and you can't help feling a little smug that you're not having to go thru that HUGE learning curve again !

OK, this is turning into a novel. Will love you and leave you and wish you all a fantastic day.

Eshay · 30/11/2005 12:35

Hi all,

Things here are well. I'm at work and booked lots of time off a few days ago. I now have only 7 days of work left to go, including today. 3 days next week and then 3 days the week after and that's it! I am quite glad it is coming to an end now as I just get too tired. I do't do anything too strenuous but it's just the commute that kills me. Tomorrow is my first day while DS will go to nursery as normal. A day all to myself! I've got all osrts of plans but I'll probably just end up sleeping most of it

Reading posts about NCT people having their babies is frightening me a bit. I'm no due till 19 Jan so I really don't want my baby to come just yet. He needs a little more time to bake - and I want my time off work before he arrives!

I have my first NCT class this evening. It's a refresher course so there are only 3 meetings but I hope to meet some other mums there. The good thing is that they will all have at least 1 child already so everyone will have some experiences to share.

Georgina, I had also read about acid reflux getting worse if you take too many tablets. I also seem to remember that this problem might be worse with Rennies tablets than with Gaviscon liquid. Don't ask me why, I read this when I was pg last time around.
And what on earth is wrong with bathing your baby in the sink? As long as you mind the taps what is the difference with a plastic bath? Or a £1 plastic bucket in my case?

Have a comfortable day everyone.

Tickle · 30/11/2005 13:31

Ditto kitchen sink - can't believe she got so cross! where on earth were we all bathed?? Also, houses are so much less draughty now... I'm amazed any of us survived when you hear all the advice

Hope everyone enjoys their last days at work. If got some baking & organising to do for a small event at Rosendal on Fri night, other than that I am trying to take it easy.

dd1 off school today - cough & cold, so we were just on the sofa together watching a film about fairies nice to spend a bit of time just with her. She was asking how they get the baby out... she is nearly 7 now, so I had a bit of proper explaining to do, but she seemed to take it all in her stride & wanted to know if it was 'ow-ey'? Tried not to give game away
