Continuation from our old thread here

So maybe this thread we'll see some babies?! And definitely lots more shopping Grin

I watched OBEM. At first I thought the lady who screamed and wailed was making a bit of a meal about it but then reality/empathy struck and I realised that she was just in a panic. She reminded me of an animal in a trap - thrashing around, making it worse, not 'managing' the pain, but unable to calm herself. Plus I don't know the circs of her labour - the baby could have been back-to-back, which is why she was in deep agony. In the end I just felt sorry for her. She'd just fallen to pieces. She was definiately a shining example of why epidurals can be excellent things though.

I hope I don't fall to pieces like that in delivery (assuming I don't have to have a caesar again) but I do know that the best laid plans are often blown out of the water in childbirth. You can envisage a zen, calm waterbirth and end up with a blood and guts emergency caesarean and not be able to influence the outcome in any way. That I do know.

On the name 'AVERY' I quite like it, although I do think it's quite American prep in that whole 'surname as name' transatlantic tradition. I'm a bit of a boring git when it comes to names and prefer the uber traditional/classic stuff. I don't associate it with labels though and it is pretty. It makes me think of a pretty American girl from Groton with swishy hair.

Got an appointment with my consultant this afternoon and I'm 28 weeks today. It's beginning to feel quite real!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/01/2011 12:46

Good luck with the appt Kits Smile

I actually quite like Avery. I didn't think of the labels until you said it, I thought of the bird cage, but I think that is spelt aviary. I also totally agree with Kits American prep description.

I would guess it's a girls name, but ambiguous names make me nervous if I don't know the persons sex.

Cyclebump · 12/01/2011 13:09

I would have guessed a boy if I'd heard Avery and I like it. DP and I are at loggerheads over names again. He just can't shake his obsession with Oliver but I HATE it. Sigh.

Yet another eBay purchase last night Smile Bought a brand new Pacapod changing bag for half the retail price. Is lovely teal and satchel style so DP wouldn't mind wearing it.

I had my physio appt this morning. She worked out the the back spasm that's been torturing me and it feels so nice not to be in pain with it.

Tomorrow morning I've got my 28 week check as I'll be 28+3. Can't believe how time's rushing by!

What do they actually do at your 28 week check?

JoEW · 12/01/2011 13:19

Yeah, I think it's quite unisex - perhaps ideal for Frakk's non-gender-specific baby?! And agree, it is American sounding too.

Thanks everyone, I will stop hogging the thread now!

Did you get your physio through the NHS, Cycle? My back is causing me problems and doesn't seem to be getting better. I might investigate seeing someone.

Cyclebump · 12/01/2011 13:43

I rang my antenatal clinic and asked how to get referred as my back's been really bad.

Physio was great but they wouldn't give me the belt that the physio recommended on the NHS, I had to buy it myself.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/01/2011 13:46

Gawd, I am on here far too much. I think I might have to do a self imposed ban Blush

Cycle - unless it has changed, 28 week check is the usual (bp, wee dip, doppler, funal height) plus bloods for iron, platelets and various other routine things that have escaped me!

Cyclebump · 12/01/2011 13:57

Didn't realise there'd be another doppler. Lovely!

SaltedPretzels · 12/01/2011 14:24

Anti D is your negative blood groups and they will record baby's position and presentation, so you can tell which bits are jabbing you Grin

AprilMeadow · 12/01/2011 17:49

Hello all and welcome to the newcomers :)

29wks tomorrow eek!

You will get to hear a doppler at each apointment which is great. I heard this one's heartbeat for the first time last week as he was hiding at 16wks!

Totally forgot to pick up my HiP form at 28wk appt (dont get the 25 as its no.4), called up on Tues to ask for one and to see if i could collect the next afternoon as i was going for my flu jab. When i asked for it the next day i was told that forms had stopped being produced and i wouldnt be able to get it!! Explained how i was eligable and wanted one. Then saw a midwife walk past who said they had my form on their desk and i was next in Hmm. Anyway, panic over, form received and sent off last night :)

Watched OBEM and couldnt believe the noise that woman was making! If i had been labouring that day i would have gone into her room and told her to shut up! She sounded like they were amputating her limbs with a blunt knife.

Petalouda · 12/01/2011 18:21

Hey all,

Has anyone heard from Beckie90? She posted about some worrying blood pressure a couple of days ago, and said she'd let us know that she'd seen the docs.

I'm quite worried about her. Anyone seen her on any other threads? I hope she's ok.

BeetleBaby · 12/01/2011 18:54

Hello all,

I had a similar panic at my appt yesterday April turns out there are 4 of us that they're trying to dig out forms for. MW gave the impression that they're having to dig through to find spares because it was so difficult to get more from where ever they come from. Should have one next week though (fingers crossed)

OBEM was great, I was in tears as soon as it started. And when that lad asked for a hug...sob! Though that when the look on the doctors face as the gave poor screaming woman (who now seems to be nationally known as the screaming woman!) was brilliant! Did any of the other first timers look at the shots of the babies and have an "Oh heck, I'm growing one of those" moments?!

Jo I really like the name Avery, but it's a name to me because I too am a 30 Rock addict rather than anything to do with office stationary!

DaisyEmma · 13/01/2011 00:21

Hi,

Thank you for your messages, feel like I'm joined in now! Have added stats, thank you caramellokoalalover.

I think Avery is a lovely name. I would expect it to be a girls name I think. We are settled on a girls name but totally stuck with boys....I want something a bit unusual maybe even a bit nature related, but not sure if that's the hormones...

I will def have to start watching OBEM.

Zafnoodles · 13/01/2011 07:34

Hi all,

do you mind if I join you? I was on the March thread ages ago but my due date changed and I never got round to changing location. I'm officially due on the 2nd of April (that would make it an immaculate conception - but who am I to argue?). The March peeps feel way ahead of me though.

I'm a first timer and still finding the whole thing a little unreal. Had my first ante-natal class on Monday. Meeting lots of other women all with bumps brought it home a little. It was a huge class at the local hospital with around 50 people so I'm really glad I've also booked an NCT class.

I've recorded OBEM - not sure I want to watch it now - loud screaming isn't part of my birth plan ;)

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 13/01/2011 07:51

All welcome zaf!

I had my GTT this morning. By gum that glucose solution is foul! And I have a bee-yoo-ti-ful bruise where the (very apologetic) nurse broke my vein extracting the requisite 10 tubes of blood for I'm not sure what else...

Anyone know what they do if your fasting glucose result is horrifically low? I didn't have a massively carb rich meal last night and normally have to eat first thing. Last time I did a GTT after a 12 hour fast (because I had to wait - typically) my fasting bloods were abnormal but my second test was fine.

petal I've not seen Beckie around either that I remember. I hope she's okay.

Change bag sounds lovely cycle. I must confess I'm just planning to have a huge handbag as most specific change bags like, well, change bagsl but yours does sound more normal looking!

OP posts:
Cyclebump · 13/01/2011 09:15

I'm not a handbag kind of gal so had to invest! Also I like that the Pacapod ones have a section for mum stuff and completely separate pouches for nappies etc and for feeding stuff. I like things organised or I lose them!

Oops was I meant to not have breakfast before my 28 week check? It's this morning and no one told me Confused

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 13/01/2011 09:23

I think they'd have told you if they were doing a GTT. Not all areas do it as standard.

If they didn't tell you it's their fault. Or maybe they take non-fasting bloods so it doesn't matter.

OP posts:
MrsWajs · 13/01/2011 09:53

Hi girls, just wanted to say, if any of you had been looking at the M&P Garda nursery furniture in Argos then now is the time to buy it!

They are adverstising the wardrobe, cotbed, and changer for £612 as a package deal but if you add all the items to your trolley seperately it only comes to £439!! Think it's because all the items have been reduced individually but they haven't adjusted the package price to match it - probably on purpose! I'm amazed that my mushy brain even noticed this!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 13/01/2011 10:56

Welcome Zaf, everyone is welcome here Smile

Lovely changing bag Cycle, I've never heard of Pacapod before - the side effect of living in the sticks!

this is the change bag I got, apart from mine is a chocolate colour

10 tubes of blood? Good Lord that's a lot, what on earth are they going to do with it? No idea about low glucose levels Frakk, I'm guessing that as you fast for so long before the blood is taken it doesn't matter what you did or didn't eat previous to the fasting. Maybe any carbs taken in before the 12 hours have passed/been processed through the body by the time the blood is taken? Tis just a guess though. I do find it all a bit ambiguous though tbh, and when you ask the professionals theses questions they just sort of give a blustery/flustery answer and don't actually answer your question. Or maybe that's just me!

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 13/01/2011 11:56

Looking at the list they're doing the GTT (so that's 2 at least although I think she took 2 phials after 1 hour), platelets, iron, toxoplasmosis, hep B, syphilis, HIV and a couple of other things I don't know the abbreviation for!

Some of them are just standard to be done every time you have blood taken here (like hep B and HIV), toxoplasmosis I have to have monthly as I'm not immune and GTT/full bloodwork screening is done about this point as standard.

OP posts:
Cyclebump · 13/01/2011 13:18

I didn't even look at the list!

Luckily as there's no diabetes in my family I wasn't being tested for it. Cyclebaby's right on track and heartbeat was very loud. They got him first time and he was very co-operative so perhaps my gentle scolding of him after the 20-week scan debacle sank in Smile

Changing bag arrived at work this morning along with my oh so sexy SIJ maternity belt that the physio told me to buy.

I love your bag ILTMIMI, it's very swish. I saw the Pacapod label on the mumsnet reviews and really liked the sound of them. I checked eBay just in case as they're around £100 brand new and I got mine for half that including postage.

I've never spent that much on a bag before but, as I said, I'm thinking of it as a hard-wearing investment.

JoEW · 13/01/2011 14:44

Petal just spotted Beckie90 had posted yesterday on a thread about HiP, hopefully all is well.

I want to get a nice changing bag now too! Had my eye on this

Apparently Brad Pitt has the leather version - if ever there was a reason to get one.

Beetle glad to meet another 30 Rock addict. It has got me through pregnancy. Love it. And, yes, I've had several of the 'Oh heck, I'm growing one of those' moments seeing the babies on OBEM, or anywhere. Usually followed by me muttering 'holy sh*t' under my breath and trying not to panic.

Had a landmark moment yesterday when I got asked if I wanted to sit down on the tube for the lirst time, then it happened again when I changed trains. Twice in one journey after months of nothing. I think it might be my new maternity coat. I was quite surprised first time and got all flustered and said that I was only on for two stops. Then I worried that the nice man would think he'd made a mistake and I wasn't actually pregnant, so would feel awful, so I made a big deal of looking pregnant and thanking him a lot while sitting down. It was all quite bewildering and by the time I'd finished flapping about it was time to get off. Still, a landmark.

Petalouda · 13/01/2011 17:07

Hello!

Thanks for the Beckie spots, I did catch her on her other thread. She's seen someone about the BP but it's still dipping alarmingly low.

Hello Zaf! I should really have left here to go to the March thread, as my edd got moved back to 25th march at 12 weeks. I quite liked this bunch so I stayed instead! (and realistically, since this is my first one I'll probably go overdue!).

Is anyone else starting to get uncomfortable? I'm 30 weeks tomorrow (EEK!) and last night my belly felt ENORMOUS! It was so heavy. I was so tired I went to bed at 8.30, but couldn't get comfy. My brain was tired, but I couldn't get comfy at all, my belly just felt like it was pulling no matter how I lay. I've tried putting pillows under my bump, but I can't stand the feeling of compression either!

So I've been a bit away with the fairies at work today! Spent the last hour calling a poor lad by the wrong name constantly (and then saying the right name and going "dur" at myself - I explained it was sleep deprivation to the kids, they laughed - in a nice way). Oh, and this morning I went on a massive mission to find A3 paper, when someone asked what I needed it for I went "oh, I don't even need A3 paper, what am I doing?!"

I've gone proper mental!

Maybe this isn't the time to do an advanced chemistry powerpoint....!

Petalouda · 13/01/2011 17:10

Oh, and regarding Avery, when it was first mentioned I thought of the labels, but it's grown on me hugely.

But I couldn't say anything else, my favourite name is a brand of cat food!

JustKeepSwimming · 13/01/2011 17:24

What, whiskas?! Grin
Sounds like pg brain kicking in alright, lol!

I'm only 26 weeks and i feel huge, sure i look huge too, can't believe how long i still have to go

Have this great theory that each pg should get shorter, the first one you need time to get sorted, move house, buy stuff, etc. but after that it should gradually shorter, so by number 3 about 5 or 6 months would be fine. Though Mrs Duggar would only have to think about it and have a baby by now, lol!

Petalouda · 13/01/2011 17:31

I would agree, except that this is my first and we've got the house and the baby equipment sorted. So can he be ready now please, I've had enough!
