Good news comtessa :)
Will be interesting to see what the scan shows. Perhaps the clever baby was trying to tell you something!

Oooh, lainey, looks like we're having synchronised sweeps, just off for mine!

umf · 24/11/2010 12:35

Oo, if synchronised sweeps are in order, maybe I'll ask mw to do another when she calls in a bit! Was thinking would just wait until head more engaged, but keen to get on with it.

(Hot weetabix sounds like v sensible thing to crave! Here it's mince pies.)

JFly · 24/11/2010 12:45

I've got pumpkin bread if anyone wants some. Delish! I'm baking up a storm with all things pumpkin as it's Thanksgiving tomorrow. Won't do the full meal, so just getting my fix of sweet things. Yum.

Good luck with sweeps! Am jealous of your home visits, umf. You seem to have more appts than me, too. Is that b/c you're on for a HB?

Someone asked about why I don't want an instrumental delivery. Mostly b/c of anecdotal stories (and a bit of actual research) about pelvic floor damage, incontinence, etc. Not that a CS is a cake walk, don't get me wrong, but I would rather have a few weeks of recovery than months of it due to damage from doctors rummaging around with forceps, ventouse, episiotomy, and the like. I know many people have uneventful instrumental deliveries, but it is something I want to avoid. But we shall see what the cards hold.

Comtessa, glad baby wriggled. Good luck with scan today, too.

Wallace · 24/11/2010 12:51

Good luck to those still waiting! Hope sweeps go well and good luck for scan, comtessa :)

Still haven't posted my birth story, but will try to get on with it soon....

grinningbee · 24/11/2010 12:53

Mmmm to hot weetabix. I have just scoffed a mars bar, but figure i'm allowed as I was up all night with the non-stop feeding monster.

My boobs think they belong to pamela anderson today - yep, my milk has come in. Very ouchy, but looks rather funny. Dh looks like a kid in a sweetshop, but he can think again!

comtessa glad lo is ok. Just to stop you worrying, the ambulance crew i had were from oakham, as i live 13 miles out of grantham. grantham wouldn't take me in as not booked there, so we had to go to qmc. They did circuits of the hospital, and in the end i was growling directions to go up the ramp to the drop off point!

Sorry for crap typing, Jack is asleep on one arm Grin

Oh, and dh has gone out and left me with the two children for the first time. eeeeeeeek!

grinningbee · 24/11/2010 14:17

Not that it matters, but I like things to be correct - just found out the conversion of Jacks weight was done wrong. They only did it in kg, and it works out to 8lb 15.2oz, not 8lb 10.

So almost a 9lber!

Oooops, he's starting to stir, time for more feeding methinks! Grin

lainey1981 · 24/11/2010 14:42

hello again.
had my sweep this morning and it went well - in that the MW was actually able to do it. she gave me lots of info that doesn't really mean much to Blush apparently am 50% effaced, 1cm dilated, and cervix is 1.5cm long (about half what it was last week) and soft. I am thinking this is good?
she recommended going for a walk, so that I did and have been on my feet since I got back cleaning & washing etc, just went to loo and had a bit of (TMI _ SORRY) bloody mucus so hopefully things heading in right direction - on tenterhooks waiting for a contraction though, so watching the tennis now to distract me.

grinning lol at your pammie breasts, looking forward to getting me some of them too.

sancerre and umf hope appointments went well

comtessa you had your scan yet?

at the hospital they did another brief scan for me today just to double check position even though she knew he was head down and 2/5 engaged. was really old grainy scanner but lovely to see his (seemingly giant) head and little heart beating away.

also really goes to show different midwives have different interpretation of tape measure usage - my fundal height was 40cm on Friday but is now apparently 38cm Confused - unless it's got smaller as LO became more engaged?

lainey1981 · 24/11/2010 14:42

sorry upon reading my post back, feel I may have shared more than you ever wanted to know about me ..

JFly · 24/11/2010 14:55

No such thing as an over share on these threads, lainey! We're all about the TMI. :) Hope things get moving for you.

comtessa · 24/11/2010 15:02

Afternoon all, thanks for all your best wishes.

Scan went well this morning. Measurements all good, head not yet engaged but very low in pelvis and MW was positive about all the contractions I was having last week being good practise for when things kick off in earnest.

There was a bit of a surprise, though. They gave me the estimated weight in grams, based on measurements. A couple of hours later, over lunch with a friend, I realised I had no clue how heavy that was. Quick trawl on internet conversion site, where I find that 4700g = 10lbs 5oz. Due date is Saturday 27th and I've been booked in for a clinic appt at QMC on Monday as a follow-up to today's scan. Just so hoping LO arrives soon. Very, very soon.

Needing a lie-down - for more reasons than one! Hope things start happening from the synchronised sweeps Lainey and Sancerre.

JFly, I'm working on the same principle this year. Roast turkey for 15 people - out. Many, many pumpkin pies (and apple, and cherry) - in. And mulled wine. We're doing ours on Saturday afternoon instead though. Happy baking!

comtessa · 24/11/2010 15:04

PS Have threatened DH with conjugal duties to help things along. Just having a slight panic about the size/weight if she goes overdue... Curry again tonight!

umf · 24/11/2010 15:07

lainey1981 yay, a "bloody show" is a v good sign! sending you contracty vibes...

JFly, yeah, the home visits are marvellous! Very good community mw here. Like being in a different country from London experience last time. Not really supposed to have appt between 38 and 41 weeks, but she's been twice! Partly I think cos hb, also cos DS1 was pretty big and difficult birth so she's keen to get this one moving. And just cos she's kind.

Mw had good prod, all still same as was on Sunday, she reckons he'll be in for a few more days yet. But I feel better anyway, just from her visiting and, well, giving a damn! Really must get self involved in campaigning for better maternity services. Good ones make so much difference!

How are you, comtessa?

comtessa · 24/11/2010 17:05

Doing well, thanks Umf, just nervous about the whole 10lbs-5oz-baby-coming-out-of-me thing.

umf · 24/11/2010 17:55

Sorry, x-posted with you, comtessa. That's "a good-sized baby", isn't it?? DS1 was 9lbs and came at 39 weeks, so I'm anticipating that this one will be a good bit bigger too. Will be astonished if he comes in under the 4kg mark.

But - entirely anecdotally from friends' births - I'm sure that the length and difficulty of labours are much more to do with positioning, chance, and quality of care than baby size - so I'm not particularly concerned. Ditto tearing - speed of final delivery, not size. Even the friend who had a real monster (4.6kg, 59cm!) managed to get him out ok, tho it was a bit scary at the end and she's having an epidural next time.

But I am glad that this one's head measures on a lower percentile than DS1's 36cm circumference... What possessed me to marry a man with such a large head, I don't know. For one thing, MiL told me his head was a normal size at birth, which I have since discovered was a Big Lie. Tho he's lovely, of course, and undoubtedly has a lot of brain in there.

4madboys · 24/11/2010 18:38

hello ladies, not time to read back, just nipping in to say i am still ill, have flu and sinisitus, been to gp and my peak flow and oxygen levels are low (have asthma) so have to go to delivery floor to moniter baby, she hasnt been as wriggly today so want to check all is ok.

having niggly tightenings and feel a bit damp, so not sure what is going on, hopefully nothing she needs to wait till i feel better! but i will try and keep you informed xx

good luck to those in labour, waiting etc, lainey a show is a good sign, sit on a birth ball etc.

oh and umf dp has a huge head and ds4's head was off the top of the chart when he was born! but he came out fine, no tears or anything, so am sure you will be fine xxx

comtessa · 24/11/2010 18:38

Thanks Umf. Now that it's sinking in I am getting a bit scared. My DH also has a big head. (Hands Umf large slice of apple cake - far less calories than doughnuts as the apples take up space that would otherwise be taken up by sugar.)

comtessa · 24/11/2010 18:40

Hope you feel better soon 4madboys and hope all well with LO.

4madboys · 24/11/2010 19:12

thanks comtessa :)

btw ds4 was 10lb 13oz and came out fine, even with his huge head! the other boys were all 9lb+ and again delivered them fine. i think big babies can be easier to labour as gravity helps them somewhat and remember that scans are not always that accurate, esp at this stage in pregnancy!

good luck, right dp should be home any minute with babysitter, bag packed and i am ready to to go.xx

JFly · 24/11/2010 19:24

Good luck with monitoring, 4madboys. Hope you're not in there all night.

umf · 24/11/2010 21:08

good luck 4! that's reassuring to hear of other big babies and large-headed husbands! (2nd thread theme, after dodgy bathrooms??)

lainey1981 · 25/11/2010 10:29

morning everyone!

4madboys hope the monitoring went well.

40+4 and still cooking, bored now! had a couple of pains in the night and got all excited but alas quick application of a hot water bottle sorted them out.
I will need to issue an eviction notice by way of induction at this rate methinks.

comtessa try not to worry, like others have said growth scans can be pretty inaccurate (20% either way) and am sure you won't have grown a baby to big to push out.

any news elsewhere?

balijay · 25/11/2010 10:30

Morning everyone - hope everyone had a restful nights sleep. Glad to see there are still some pregnant women on here!

Hand - holding required Booked in for induction tomorrow and instead of being excited I am terrified Blush From previous experience I just know this is going to mean that bloody horrible drip and no gradual build-up/chance to get used to the contractions. V v scared. Sad

Hope everything went ok at the hospital last night 4madboys

Sorry no advice for those of you expecting big-uns, I only tend to have little 6-pounders, but I will keep my fingers crossed that you all have an easy time of it x

balijay · 25/11/2010 10:31

Oh 41w today.
