Just a new thread as I noticed we are near the limit (again)!

And I don't think our babies will get the £250 child trust fund money Sad

Not unless they're born before Dec 31st, no. Start saving up for university now!

Morning ladies, hope people have been able to anjoy the weekend. We had a nice weekend of family acitivites with big sis, BIL, niece and Mum & Dad so that was lovely.

Have noticed though, I seem to have hit a 'wall' of hunger. I've been doing really well with food so far, not scoffing anything unhealthy really, mostly feeding up on fruit etc. but have suddenly noticed that it's not enough. I have had poached egg on toast for breakfast (pretty normal for me) this morning and at 09.45 had to have my banana as my stomach was just turning inside out with hunger. I've noticed this for a couple of days though, but it has come on quite suddenly. I know we're meant to eat a bit more later on, I'm just nervous about not falling into the eating for two trap, having struggled with weight most of my life. Also don't want to double the fruit I eat and don't really want to increase carbs either, as in the end a lot of it ends up as sugar and again being overweight to start with, GD is a risk. So what to do? Any suggestions gratefully received! Wondering about extra plain protein, e.g. bringing a little bit of chicken or tuna to eat on its own or with salad mid morning. Will this fill me up? Any wise words ladies?

GuyFawkesIsMyLoveSlave · 08/11/2010 10:15

I am just starting my GD diet today, in preparation for first GD appointment tomorrow... for me, from this point I will be cutting out regular bread, rice, pasta and potatoes entirely (because I know rice makes my blood sugar spike and I find it difficult to do the others in the necessary moderation so just cutting them out works better for me). I switch to rye bread or similar in small quantities or something like a Dr Karg's pumpkin seed crispbread, and use sweet potato rather than potato (it's lower GI... actually, I never really went back to potato after my last pregnancy but I'll try to avoid potato when I'm out or at other people's houses too now). And I make sure I eat protein with every meal or snack.

In your case I'd probably up your breakfast to two poached eggs, and add protein into your snacks. And I'd have a handful of nuts or some plain yogurt alongside the banana to add protein there.

And try to eat something before bed even if it's just another handful of nuts -- if you do have a tendency towards GD it can help keep your blood sugar level overnight.

Deliaskis · 08/11/2010 10:25

Thanks GuyFawkes, that's really helpful, hadn't thought about yoghurt as can have that with my 'normal' fruit, and I'm more than happy to have an extra egg in the morning.

I think you're right, upping the protein seems to be the way to go to not get sugar spikes, so that will be my plan!

Thanks again, really appreciate your thoughts.

My midwife said she did not have any forms for the HIP grant at my 25 week appointment so now I will have to wait until my 28 week one to ask again Hmm

angels1 · 08/11/2010 11:13

I read on a mn thread a few weeks ago that the grant can take weeks to come through at the minute anyway - apparently as it's stopping soon they are moving resources away from processing the grants to other departments ready for when it all closes down - think some people were saying on the thread it took a month or two to come through. Which really, when you think about it, sort of defeats the point of health in pregnancy if you get it right at the end of being pregnant! I've got the form but mw couldn't sign it as I was 24 weeks when I saw her, so I have to go this week just to get her to sign on the dotted line so I can post it off.

Thanks for the well wishes re: m y ears - just got back from GP and I do have a double dose of ear infections, so am sitting on the sofa feeling sorry for myself but at least being comforted by the fact that the reason why I've been feelign so awful in the last few days must be due to that and not just pg ropey-ness. It's so miserable outside here too.

angels1 · 08/11/2010 11:23

oh, and delia I find soup is a greaty mid morning snack (says angels heartily tucking into some soup!) and you can get protein in it by using lentils or meat in it, or a bit of cheese on top. It's lovely and comforting on a cold day too :) It's one of those things you can make in massive batches and reheat portions as needed, or buy the ready made stuff if you don't have time etc.

OP posts:
PDR · 08/11/2010 11:33

Sorry about your ears angels I used to get a lot of ear infections so know how miserable it is! Are you off work? Can you take anything?

I am having my first proper day of "resting" today as DS is at nursery all day and DH was working late last night so is sleeping upstairs. I wonder if he wakes up he might take me out for lunch...?

DS's nursery are doing a "Big Breakfast" thing all week to raise money for Children In Need so I indulged in a bacon roll after I dropped him off :)

geekygiraffe · 08/11/2010 12:09

Thanks for all the food tips - am off to buy some healthy stuff as am addicted to carbs at the moment (old wives tale = boy?).
Good HiP grant news - I posted my form on 27 Oct, and the money is in my account today. Now waiting with bated breath to hear about maternity allowance (I work freelance - should be entitled, but worry I won't be for some reason).
ledkr about baby movements - I'm with you. I feel it every day, but the kicks aren't that dramatic. Is first baby, so not sure what's normal! HB was fine at 25 week check-up, next seeing midwife next Fri (for Anti-D jab too). I feel movement, but worry I should be feeling constant kung-fu moves.

angels1 · 08/11/2010 13:10

change of subject a bit - has anyone got any experience of a 'tripp trapp' baby/child high chair type thing? MIL tells us it's something else that we have to have. I know it's not something we'll have to get straight away, but would be nice to hear any experienced thoughts on it.

OP posts:
Deliaskis · 08/11/2010 13:11

Re movements, I feel quite a lot each day, but not constantly. More active just after I have eaten, when it's noisy (fireworks were a laugh!) and when I need the loo.

The weird thing is my mat notes say something like phone mw if you're not getting 10-12 movements a day, but I don't know if that means 10-12 individual kicks, in which case I have that every day without a doubt, or 10-12 different occasions when wriggling and kicking is going on, in which case I would say no, I have more like 4 or 5 of those.

Hi all. Came on for abit of solidarity as dh is supposed to be doing the housework today as he offered/promised.Basically its hoover through-big house so sat 30 mins clean two bathrooms 15mins and tidy a toy cupboard-10 mins.He has been up since 8.30 and has hoovered on room between looking on the internet!!I have tidied kithen, washed all the baby bedding, put away all the baby clothes in drawers, loaded dishwasher and tidied my bedroom oh yeah and cleaned the loos.I got so breathless i had to stop.I am seriously booking the cleaner today.
wigglesreading about your "special hole" made me a little queasy,no wonder dd looked shocked!
Hows your pain?pdrI have just ordered my attractive belt/truss so hope to be able to walk for more than 2 mins soon.
geeky i felt seriously worried last few days. She is moving but just not that ofte or much.I have a dopler and can hear her hb but can also hear her move but not feel it.
I am massive and she isnt and i have a lot of fluid and anterior placenta so maybe thats it.
I would definatly co sleep if we had a poor sleeper but i have always had good ones(omg should i not have said that?)
I was tempted when ex dh left and dd was only 8 months but was glad i didnt cos then met dh when she was 4 and would have caused problems me thinks. She always comes in with me if he is on nights now but dhes old enough not to develop a habit. if she is ill or scared she has a little bed on the floor.

ledkr · 08/11/2010 13:14

pdr by the way does your spd hurt more when you need a wee?

byronicheroine · 08/11/2010 14:14

ledkr I feel your cleaning pain - why do we have to stand over (some) men to get them to Do Anything? Mine doesn't mind doing it - if i ask him 20 times - which makes me feel like a nag. Boring, isn't it?
I think bribery is the way to go...

Thanks for the help on co-sleeping, I think I like the idea but not sure of the practicalities in our double (as I sleep on my back sprawled out like a baby anyway) - so maybe a basket or side-sleeper is the answer.

ledkr · 08/11/2010 14:34

byron yes thats just it. He will do it and has no issues with it but he is so bloody slow and easily distracted it takes him ages and then he resent s spending his days off doing it.I too feel like a nag and more annoyingly feel i have to be doing stuff too as otherwise he will join me having a sit down or watching tv etc.I am signed off with spd and anaemea so this sort of defeats the object!
Am going to book cleaner for every fortnight i think just to hoover and do bathrooms.

I am a bad sleeper and need darkness and my own bed/space/privacy so co sleeping wouldnt suit me either. I have a basket and she will be right by our bed but i will move her by 6 months.I like to watch tv,pamper mayself or read in my bedroom which is difficult with a baby up there.

40Weeks · 08/11/2010 14:43

Hello all

Hope you are feeling better angels are you allowed Anti biotics?

delia Protein us def the way forward, an extra egg us a good idea or if you make your own sandwiches/salads then load with extra ham/tuna/chicken. You are right not to overindulge your cravings as it can be so hard to lose the weight after, ESP as b/feeding made me scoff even more than pgcy.! Good luck.

What miserable weather today. Anyone understand why Cowell & co kept Katie in txf?? If Treyc was the better singer then shouldn't she have stayed? How many songs does kw have to stuff up to get kicked off? She will never win considering how often she has been in bottom 2!!

Rant over Wink til the next time ...

40Weeks · 08/11/2010 14:45

Oh and any inspirational ideas for dinner?? I can't think of a thing to make

angels1 · 08/11/2010 14:54

I think I'm going to do mac cheese for my tea 40weeks. I have some proper old fashioned rice pud in the oven too (mmmmm, ultimate comfort food for me). Actually, thinking that through they don't really go together as a meal. Maybe I'll stick to a baked pot and salad. For a super quick protein meal how about omlette?

PDR · 08/11/2010 15:02

Re: Tripp Trapp we have one of these and I must say it has been fab... DS is now 2.5 and still uses it every day. I also sit in it sometimes and it hasn't broken yet! The think I like is it tucks under the table like a normal chair. If you don't want to spend out there are loads of non-Stokke versions which are much cheaper. My best friend has a BabyDan one which looks very similar....

ledkr I don't feel more pain when I need to wee actually but maybe this could be because when your bladder is full it is putting extra pressure on your pelvis? Hope they measure me for a belt at physio appt tomorrow...

PDR · 08/11/2010 15:15

Oh and ledkr a cleaner is a great idea! We have one anyway and I was sooo glad of her with the SPD! I don't think I could do the hoovering or bend down to clean the bath/inside showers etc and the doctor actually told me to get as much help as possible with household tasks :) So basically it's doctor recommended!

supadupa900 · 08/11/2010 17:28

Hi Everyone, After a bit of advise today really. I've just had a letter from the Dr surgery inviting me for the flu job (they say preggers women are more at risk from flu). My first instinct is to run a mile from it. What does everyone else think?

ledkr · 08/11/2010 17:36

Thats my first instinct supa but it has to be your choice entirely. I am lucky enough never to get colds or flu (even when i was having chemo)so i am happy to take a chance.I am also fortunate that dh and dd do not pick things up often either and if they did i would take reasonable precautions not to catch it ie. go on holidy to spain.haha
There was a thread on here but as usual it got a bit heated like everything on mn.Good luck in your choice making.

PDR · 08/11/2010 17:48

My Doc told me not to bother with the flu jab(s) if it's any help to you supa - so I won't be. I do get colds every now and then but nothing serious.
