walkthedog I thought if you weren't entitled to SMP there was still something else (maternity allowance?), always worth investigating although there seem to be so many hoops to jump through...

DS is fine, a bit bruised and battered round the nose but it doesn't look like there'll be any permanant damage, my nerves are still totally shot to pieces though!

littlehuman still no joy here either I'm afraid.

Hi newyearmummy and kiki84 glad I'm not the only new girl Grin

splodge77 · 20/09/2010 11:56

hi all and welcome to the new peeps,

Walkthedog, would you qualify for Maternity Allowance? that is what i'll be getting as i'm a freelancer.
littlehuman I got told on the same DAY by 2 different people that "ooh wasn't i big/small for my stage of pregnancy", so i wouldn't worry too much about it!

We have found a lovely flat to move into and have a move date. thank goodness! A big load off my mind. It is in SE london tho and we are currently SW so i guess i may have to change hospitals/midwifery teams. I'm not that keen as i'm very happy with the care i've had so far but guessing its not a great idea to be too far from the hospital, especially with london traffic. Has anyone else changed hospitals/PCT's halfway through a pregnancy? If so, how did it go? I guess that, seeing as i haven't seen the same person for any of my appointments so far anyway it's not such a big deal...

WalkTheDog · 20/09/2010 20:01

welcome kiki

thanks splodge and wondersnuffle re MA, but that was actual what I meant, got myself confused! I finished work at the end of Jan when we moved over here, haven't managed to get any work since then. I am on jobseekers until 11 weeks before EDD, if I still haven't found work in the next few weeks. To get MA I need to have worked 26 weeks in the 66 weeks counted up to week before week of EDD, I fall 6 weeks short - really annoying as I have worked since I left college in 1992! I can seemingly apply for a one off maternity payment of £500 so will def be doing that.

splodge wouldn't worry about moving MW teams, esp as you've still plenty time to get to know who is who. Are you the same as in Scotland tht you have your antenatal notes? As we have to travel to the main hospital to deliver, we won't have met any of the team. We know where the maternity dept is, how to get to hospital (where had 20 week scan) and not much else!

Was planning on going bramble picking tonight, but it has suddenly got too dark. Last time I was planning on collecting two people bet me too it - so this lot of ripened ones are MINE....lol! OH really wanting me to make some jam.

littlehuman · 22/09/2010 16:53

hello everyone

just been on the phone with my mum (good job we live far away from my parents and the inlaws too..)
are you still doing this or that? you still driving your scooter? do you still drink alcohol? or teach your fitness classes? eat well?....etc...

oh dear...would i be the same when i ll be about to become a gran ?

mummychicken · 22/09/2010 19:41

littlehuman I had similar with my Mum(love her dearly) about decaf coffee - I try to drink less caffine hence the decaf, she started on at me about how I should cut down - I only have 2 or 3 cups day - hardly excessive!

Last time she was here, she said that we didn't leave our 2 yr old DS alone enough Hmm. Obviously I'm a terrible Mum as I choose NOT to neglect my little boy!!!

Mothers eh????

wondersnuffle · 22/09/2010 22:24

splodge I'm guessing if you haven't seen the same person more than once you're not going to be too bereft at leaving them. Maybe google the new hospital just to check it isn't dire but by the time you're in late stage labour you're unlikely to care where you are or who your midwife is. With DS I was meant to have a homebirth so I was introduced to every member of the midwife team so I'd know the person who came round, on the night the only available midwife ended up being from a different team altogether. I really don't think it mattered in the grand scheme of things.

walkthedog hope you got some blackberries eventually!

littlehuman and mummychicken remember it's just because they care Smile, my mum would love to do an exact inventory of everything I eat or drink and probably make quite a lot of changes...

Jobi1 · 23/09/2010 08:53

Hi everybody, hope you're all ok. I am worrying a bit for a change and wondered if anyone knows if I'm being daft.

Since getting bad hip and pelvis pain about 6 weeks ago I've been sleeping propped up on 4-5 pillows. Sometimes I'm on my back and sometimes I do end up on my side, but pain has been a lot better.

Sometimes though I seem to end up wriggling low on pillows so I'm not as raised up and therefore sleeping flatter. I'm worried that I could be doing the baby some harm! I'm not exactly flat, but not that raised up either... what do you think? I'm quite concerned and as its 2nd pregnancy its still a while stil I see midwife... Thanks

littlehuman · 23/09/2010 10:53

jobi1 Confused its something i never thought about... i am not a midwife or anything but i imagine your baby is in its little bubble of water and turns around all the time and in different positions so it shouldnt really matter, i would say its more for your own comfort so that you get a good sleep.

Jobi1 · 23/09/2010 11:24

Thanks littlehuman, I have read its something to do with weight on a blood vessel and have been stressing that I'm starving it of oxygen or something! I'm probably being daft, natural born worrier me. I think I've feeling a bit tired and low which doesn't help, but hey ho Smile

littlehuman · 23/09/2010 13:59

jobi1 dont worry i feel the same too,
my cat's diabetes not getting better so up all night cleaning cat poo, pee, and puke every half hour, charming! absolutly shattered.
also was convinced DH didnt like littlegirl as never seems bother to touch my tummy when she kicks, never listen to it either, etc...
but after some googling and talking to friends , i realised that men are not really involved into parenthood and baby stuff until birth...
26th week might not be a good week thenWink

Jobi1 · 23/09/2010 15:38

Oh no poor you and poor cat! Wish it better for both your sakes!

Yeah its true that men feel a bit removed from it til arrival. My OH does sometimes enjoy it if he feels some kicking but generally doesn't make much of a fuss.

Just got to get on with it haven't we!

Newyearmummy · 23/09/2010 19:57

Hi everyone. My local NHS antenatal class has been changed and is not being run by a midwife. Has anyone experience of NCT classes yet?

WalkTheDog · 23/09/2010 20:37

oh poor cat (and you) littlehuman

I tried to get OH to feel tummy one night when baby had been quite active, but he only kept it there for about a minute and then gave up. Mind you he woke up last night worrying that if his backpain doesn't get any better how is he going to play with his kid. Tried to reasssure him that is pain will go and even if it didn't he'd still have a great relationship and be able to play.

My pelvic pain has majorly increased over the past two days. Today I can hardly stand for more than 5minutes and when I took the dog for a short walk I was crying when I got home. Not keen on painkillers in pg and found in past paracetamol doesn't work when get joint pain, but took one today and it did nothing. So using hot water bottle, trying to rest in comfortable position and have ordered a belt that I used to issue to patients that can help. Hoping it is just a couple day flare up.

in theory jobi1 if you lie flat then you could block off blood supply but they seem to say it is not a major concern:

Expert Answers
Russell Turk, obstetrician

If you typically sleep on your back, it's safe to continue doing so through the first trimester. But as the uterus gets heavier in the second trimester, it's best to choose another position.

When you lie on your back, your uterus presses on the vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart. Lying on your back for an extended period of time could interfere with the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and your developing baby.

This is potentially unsafe, particularly if you have a condition like high blood pressure that affects how much oxygen and nutrients the baby is getting. If you have such a condition, your doctor will advise you to sleep on your side.

Don't be alarmed if you go to sleep on your side and wake up flat on your back. It happens all the time and shouldn't have any serious adverse effect on your baby's health.

Nonetheless, try to train yourself to sleep on your side or sitting propped up. If you need to, place a pillow between your legs, under your hip, or behind your back to make your sleep position more comfortable.

Catherine Lynch, ob-gyn

Once you get to the third trimester of pregnancy, I don't recommend lying flat on your back for any prolonged period of time. When you lie on your back, the increased weight of your uterus presses on the major vein that returns blood from your legs to your heart.

Of course, when you're sleeping you can't control what position you're in. If you wake up on your back, it's probably because your body was telling you to shift your position.

I recommend sleeping at an angle, tilted slightly to one side or the other. You can put a pillow between your legs to make that position more comfortable.

deedee321 · 23/09/2010 22:28

walkthedog, your pelvic pain sounds awful, poor you!

Jobi1 · 24/09/2010 09:12

I think generally I'm not lying flat, mostly propped up, so think I will find something else to worry about Grin

Incidentally walkthedog, I'm sleeping like this cos of pelvic pain and its really worked for me. About 4-5 pillows behind me, shuffled about until lying back on them is comfy, then I try and lie just slightly turned on to one hip or the other. Sometimes if I'm struggling I'll lie on side, but still propped up, and pelvic pain is greatly reduced. I could barely walk 6 weeks ago, and get a bit stiff and achey now but nowhere near as bad.

deedee321 · 24/09/2010 17:14

Have gathered all my energy together and am starting potty-training boot camp with my dd next week!! Don't think will be able to bear it once bump is much bigger...any tips gratefully received :)

littlehuman I've finally seen your profile! That is an incredibly neat bump but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about - I'm pretty certain the scans look at baby's size and fluid so someone would have mentioned it if there were any concerns. Everyone does carry differently, although it does make me think my bump is more cake and less baby on board Blush. Your poor cat, is the diabetes a recent thing? And poor you on clear up duty.

newyearmummy I didn't do NCT but a few of my friends did and they thought the classes were good. I'm sure there must be someone on here with personal experience...

jobi1 and walkthedog hope the pain does get better. Have you got a birthing ball yet? I find mine a lot more comfy than chairs or the sofa...not a lot of use when you're in bed though!

deedee321 Good luck with the potty training. We need to do it soon but DS is resisting, hope it goes better for you.

ladybuzz hope you can finally relax and enjoy now, must have been horribly stressful going through all those scans. And congratulations on the girl Smile

mummychicken oh the glamour of pregnancy and spending so much time peeing in pots Grin

My freeview box is broken so no telly and lots of mumsnet tonight. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth investing in one of the boxes which records as I remember missing the end of loads of things when DS was born.

Hello everyone, I am a really poor poster, but will be making the effort. I have added myself to the January list as DS1 was a huge 17 days late, so not expecting baby to make an appearance before January.

deedee hi no advise on training potty as no experience whatsoever lol but the "the potty training boot camp" made me laugh!

hey ladybuzz congratulation for your little girl!

wondersnuffle
i ve managed to make my profile after nearly 6 months ahahah. better later than never.
and my cat is diabetic since exactly the same time that i am pg thats why at the beginning we thought his change of behaviour was due to feelin that i was pg..and we didnt do nothing about it until he got worse and we got worried.however he had 2 good nights in the row, that make such a change for me to have a decent night sleep!finger crossed!
