Afternoon Ladies,

Hope everyone is well today!?

jeelypiece thank you very much for adding me to the list :o

Re. dopplers, I'm not sure if it has been answered already but I had to go and buy one too (just to check up on the little one.... neurotic mother tendencies have set it already) and i took it to my first midwife appointment as I wanted to ask if she would use mine rather than hers.

She was quite happy to, and confirmed that I had been listening to the right things Wink. When I asked about use, she said there was no evidence to say that it was unsafe although it was a good idea to limit usage as a precaution. She also said that she had heard of people recommending against home use but this usually had more to do with control than anything scientific. They didn't want women either identifying what they thought was the heartbeat and assuming everything was ok when it wasn't or not being able to find it one day and panicking. Hope this helps in some way but as I final thought on dopplers, hope you're all enjoying yours as much as I am mine, I love it!!!

Apologies for the length of this post but I wondered if I could ask for some advice on baby kicks....

I'm fairly sure the little one has given me a few nudges now but not certain. I've felt what I can only liken to a bit of trapped wind moving albeit closer to the front of my belly than wind would usually be..... does that ring a bell with anyone?

Also, can anyone remember getting to 19 weeks and not having much of a belly at all? I can't do my jeans up anymore and there's definitely something hard and roundish in there but it just looks like I've neglected my gym routine more than anything (which i have) My mother in law saw me in my pj's the other morning and asked if I was sure I was pregnant.

Again apologies for the essay.

Wonderful to hear all the lovely encouraging test results coming back!!

sam26oscar · 04/10/2010 13:17

lucky you mummyGeorgie !!!i am nearly 19 weeks and have a huge belly!! well i think i have but seeing as the mums in the playground still don't know i'm pregnant maybe i'm not as big as i think!! although i have been in maternity jeans for a few weeks they did fall down a lot, i found maternity leggings were a much better item especially at that horrible in between stage!!

RE: dopplers. i asked my boss a (g.p)this morning about what she thought of the use of them and she said that apparently there is a lot of talk about it within the gyn/oby because if there is a problem with the baby , mums are hearing the heartbeat but could assume baby is ok cos they can hear the heartbeat.
The most important thng is to keep an eye on and monitor the baby movements rather that the heartbeat because first thing a distressed baby will do is stop moving.
Sorry if that doesn't make much sense but i think that its ok to use as long as you are sensible and if baby does move less ( i know most of us are feeling few movements but i think this advice is for 24 weeks)then not to rely on the doppler for reassurance get to a midwife!!
If anyone else knows any more info or anything different i would be very interested...as i have actually got one and use it !!

superpenguin · 04/10/2010 16:18

am jealous of all your movement-feeling! I'm 18+3 today and still not felt anything definite. Got a mw appt tomorrow pm though. I kind of assume everything is ok though!

mendipgirl · 04/10/2010 16:32

Hi all, I've been out the oop the last few weeks, on holiday etc. Just reviewed the list and there are loads of us now, which is great!!!

I'm starting to feel the LO move now as well, which is a lot earlier than with my first so for any first time Mums don't worry if it takes a while.

Saw my HR manager today to discuss maternity leave, going to take 9 months I think, plus use up all my holiday so finish mid Feb and come back Jan 2012. She is 19 weeks pregnant as well which is bizarre but made for a nice meeting, chattign with someone in the same situation.

My bump has definitely come out in the last week, it seems to suddenly expand. I have a team meeting on Thursday so will let everyone know that doesn't already know then.

Have my appointment with the consultant on Wednesday which I am a bit nervous about. Was dead set on a CS but now having second thoughts...I guess I will just see what she says.

I used a doppler last time, but couldn't find anything so stopped in case I drove myself insane.

spilttheteaagain · 04/10/2010 19:54

Those of you first timers impatiently waiting to feel your babies move... I am still waiting at 19+3 today! I have no idea what I'm expecting to feel though, so whilst I seem to have a "lively" stomach I keep putting it down to wind/fluid/food etc. I am waiting for a "Ow! You monster!" kick before I am sure Grin

Scan on Thurs. Excited and of course scared/worried too.

Muser · 04/10/2010 20:20

Hello all. I've been away for the weekend. Just wanted to give some advice on the issue of winter coats. I bought a swing coat in the sales this year and having tried it on recently I think it should be ok to wear through all of the pregnancy. It's not a maternity coat obviously, but because it's swing style there's tons of room in there to host a bump. I'd recommend checking out non-maternity ranges for something similar, so you don't end up spending a fortune on a coat to wear one winter.

spilttheteaagain · 04/10/2010 20:36

Re coats, the ones in New Look Maternity aren't too pricy so I will probably get one of those (I've fancied a red coat for ages!)

I bought my last coat at sixth form, aged 17 so don't feel it's extravagent Grin

spilttheteaagain · 04/10/2010 20:36

I meant to post the link...
coats

Medee · 04/10/2010 21:45

My problem with all the maternity coats (the reasonably priced ones that is) is that they are double-breasted. I'll just have to make do and wear plenty jumpers under my open coats.

pushmepullyou · 04/10/2010 22:40

Evening all. Just wrote a long post and lost it. Aargh!

Glad to see good news for chickie and purplefan Smile

Feeling quite a bit of movement now, just have to stop myself panicking if I have a quiet few hours. DD was none stop from about 18 weeks and hopefully (maybe Grin) this one will go the same way

Big wave to everyone, but have to have to go to bed - only just got in from work.

Night all

NowPanicAndFreakOut · 04/10/2010 23:14

Yay! Have joined the movement group! (am 18 +2). Like spiltthetea I've had a "lively" stomach for a couple of weeks but last night was watching tele and happened to have my hand on my belly and could feel it in hand as well - has been really lively whenever ive had the chance to sit still today and am loving it!!! (although am sure won't say that when big kicks start hurting!)

Re coats - great minds Muser! - I bought a swing coat last week - couldn't bear the idea of buying a coat for one winter and this one has plenty of room. Also (from when I got my first "proper" job 13 years ago!) I have a long wrap around style one that I'm hopeful will do at least till Christmas.

Lozario · 05/10/2010 07:49

RE: coats - I have much sadness about the military style coats this winter - eg the one Lisa Snowdon wears on the M&S ad when she's between the soldiers. I LOVE it!!! You can't really have a preg belly with one of them though, boo!!!

My tummy is starting to pop out now but the first time I was pregnant, I didn't show until about 5 months. I think my tummy muscles are destroyed from last time so its showing earlier - also I started this pregnancy skinnier so that might have something to do with it too.

Am at my mums this week with ds1 for a little break with her and my grandma. It's lovely - no cooking for a week!!!

Larty74 · 05/10/2010 10:03

Ugh. caught man flu from DH. staying home from school to watch baby shows on discovery health channel.

pushmepullyou · 05/10/2010 11:03

I have a military style coat that I can just about still do up, don't think I'll be in it much longer though!

Yey for the movement panic. I can't feel anything from the outside yet, but I'm certainly feeling all sorts of little wriggles from the inside Smile

1Catherine1 · 05/10/2010 11:26

Hope you feel better soon Larty, flu without magic drugs is depressing :(

Larty74 · 05/10/2010 17:30

Thanks Catherine paracetemol just doesn't do it for me, so I figure why bother?

Anyone thinking of names yet? not that you have to reveal as there are loads of threads for that, just wondering. Got loads of girls and NO boys. hear this is a common thing - anyone find the same?

Larty74 · 05/10/2010 17:30

p.s. I'm bored with being sick.

katster37 · 05/10/2010 18:06

Hi all!

Only my second post, not been v efficient sorry.

Interesting about dopplers and how people have used them to reassure themselves - I also read that monitoring movements was far more important. Someone I knew had checked her baby's heartbeat, heard it and felt reassured but then still had a niggle that something wasn't right, went to the hospital where they monitored her and instantly decided to do a c-section as something wasn't right. Not trying to scare anyone, but just that in the later stages, it's so important to monitor movements.

I think once you feel the baby move a lot, and the movements are stronger, it is so reassuring that you perhaps won't feel the need to use the home doppler? It's this in between-y bit where the movements aren't that strong/ frequent, isn't it.

I have also just popped this last week! I was off work last week (only part time anyway) but going back Thursday, and in the two weeks I've been away, my tummy has completely popped! A lot of people don't know yet at work, but I think they'll find out pretty soon!

1Catherine1 · 05/10/2010 18:38

I have a boys name and a girls name chosen. One of each, I'm efficient! Although my OH needs convincing on the girls name. He wanted to name our son after his uncle and tbh I didn't want to for a number of reasons so I've offered the female version of the name as a girls name as a compromise. I actually quite like it too, its very pretty. But he wasn't very enthusiastic.

Jupiter118 · 05/10/2010 18:47

Hello all

so much chat - find it hard to keep up.

Larty - sorry to hear about catching manflu - but endless tv is good. Have to confess to liking baby progs on discovery also.

Re: names - not really started thinking this time. Last time had loads of girls names that we agreed on, but no boys ones. Then found out at 28w that was a boy. Bit of a mare. No idea about this time.

Coats - also eyeing up one from New Look. Not much choice available and quality mixed.

Is anyone else very hormonal? I am a witch - up and down - awful. Lost it in front of my boss and ended up crying this pm - not very me at all - only second ever time have cried at work, but too much to do, too much pressure and no time.

MW - 16 w appt on Thurs - nervous, but looking forward to (hopefully) hearing heartbeat. Am beginning to look more preggers as opposed to just looking like a salad dodger which is a relief. Not sure if have felt anything just yet - might of - then again might just be trapped wind Blush

Toodle pip

Southsearocks · 05/10/2010 20:44

Hello!

Can I join your thread. I'm due 21st March, first baby and 40 this month so all very exciting!

I'm very anxious though after a bleed last Sunday. I had to stay in hospital for a night and took the rest of the week off work as I was so worried I'd miscarry Sad. I feel a lot better this week and have started to feel excited again. It's a bit of a roller coaster isn't it?

me23 · 05/10/2010 21:01

you are totally right about dopplers vs movement-movement much more important and reliable indicator of fetal health than hearing a heartbeat-after all using a doppler only tell you that the baby is alive at that moment in time, it has no predictive value,
in fact we (i.e mws and student mws) only listen to hb at antenatal appts because the women like to hear it, the woman reporting fetal movements tells us a lot more. NICE guideline do not reccomend rountine doppler use at antenatal appts.

It is also true that using dopplers can be problematic if you haven;t been trained as to what it is you are hearing and what you are looking for.

16 weeks tomorrow still feeling sick everyday this pregnancy is so much harder than my first.

Larty74 · 06/10/2010 09:01

Welcome Southsearocks and congratulations and happy birthday - what great milestones all at once! rollercoaster is definitely the right for for it all.
