How old was your DC when they began sleeping in a bed?

My DS is 2.2 and will be 2.6 when he goes into his new room and hopefully bed. At the moment he is still in a cot and moves loads in his sleep. I'm not really worried about him falling out, as the bed we've chosen is so low and has sides. He also doesn't use bedding at the moment so moving on to a duvet and pillow is concerning me slightly. How did your DC's fare with the change? Thank you

DS was 23m. He had had a cot pillow and cot duvet before the move. If your DS is in a sleeping bag, I think grobag make something that is a cross between a sleeping bag and a duvet for big beds...?
He was very excited about the move - mainly because he chose his own bedding and now has George Pig to rest his head on.
The biggest problem is them getting up, but a stairgate on the bedroom door has worked well with both of mine.

DS1 was 16 months - not great i admit but he hated his cot with a passion (no idea why) and slept in his travel cot mostly from about 9 months. We put a soft side jobby on the bed and he slept the best ever... He did just have a sheet & blanket not a duvet to begin with though.

DS2 was about 2 i think but could sleep on a washing line.

If you are worried about doing it all at once you could move his cot into the new room for a bit or put his new bed in his old room.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/06/2010 13:53

DD was 2 and 1/2 DS was 22 months

Bramshott · 23/06/2010 13:56

DD2 is 3 yrs 3 months and we moved her into a bed last weekend. It was very uneventful and she's sleeping well in it !

Eliza70 · 23/06/2010 13:59

DD was 2.4, also a mover about in cot. We moved him to a bed with no problems. He has a blanket and duvet on the bed but never seems to stay under either of them. He has fallen out once (never seen DP move so fast when we heard the crash) but was fine.

2 and one month

MadameCheese · 23/06/2010 14:01

Thanks clem he doesn't use anything at the mo because it is so hot but yes has used a gobag in the past. He certainly likes the look of the bedding when I've shown him before. I suppose it is a case of "suck it and see". Good idea Susan

DD - about 18 months as we wanted her out of it long before DC2 wanted it.

Our second child stayed in it until he was 3. He loved it and didn't really want to leave then. It was a cot-bed so he had it as a cute little bed for a while.

mumoffourgirls · 23/06/2010 14:10

DD was 13 months when she went into a bed, she hated her cot and slept so much better in a bed

littlefroggy · 23/06/2010 14:41

DS3 was 17 months, but it is a small bed with one of those sides that you put up and down.
Same here, hated to cot with a passion, but loves his little bed.

katiepotatie · 23/06/2010 14:55

DD was 18 months, was pregnant with ds and wanted her out of the cot before he came along. She slept well and didn't even realise she could get out of it for a few months

Lynli · 23/06/2010 15:09

DD was 10 months slept on cot mattress on the floor for a while frightened of her falling. She had developed an absolute fear of the cot completely hysterical. She would rather lay on the floor and go to sleep.

Traintastic · 23/06/2010 20:13

DS is 2.10 and we have no plans to move him yet.

A sleep therapist once told me that in her experience, so long as the child was sleeping well and safely in the cot, then you should leave them as long as possible, at least until after their 3rd birthday for a smoother transission.

Will probably move ds out of his when he grows out of it which shouldn't be anytime soon cos he has a huge cotbed or when he asks.

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 23/06/2010 22:07

2:6 years.

Have the quilt landscape and tuck under the mattress, never falls out!

Portofino · 23/06/2010 22:13

DD climbed out of cot bed at 21 months. We took the sides of the next day. We moved when she was 2 and sold the cot/bought a toddler bed.

DD was just over 2. We started before that with a pillow, then introduced a duvet and then when she started climbing out we took the bars off her cotbed.

She used to move around all over the place, but moved less with the pillow, and even less with the duvet.

On the first night of the big girls bed, we did go in there before we went to bed and found her on the floor! We think she rolled off. Got a bedguard after that.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 23/06/2010 22:20

16 months.

Karoleann · 23/06/2010 22:58

Unfortunately both mine climbed out of their cots at 20 months. So both were in beds a couple of days later, both slept much worse afterwards and if my next one isn't a climber he'll be in a cot til 3!

melrose · 23/06/2010 23:03

DS1 was 3 ish DS2 is 2.11 and have no plans to move him yet, both in grobag. Don't get the rush to move them!

whoodoo · 24/06/2010 10:19

DS1 was about 26 months and was so excited about it.
DS2 has been flinging himself around in the cot so much that we've had to put him in the the spare double bed (and he still manages to fall out every night!). have to get to ikea to buy him a new toddler bed with a rail

pigleychez · 24/06/2010 13:33

DD was 18mths old.

We put the bed up in her room with her cot with the plans to let her get used to it fir a while.. ie play on it, have a few daytime naps but that night she wa desperate to sleep in it. We thought we;d just go with it as she was so eager and we never looked back.
She was abit unsettled for the first 3 nights but that was it.. almost like she'd stir and realise it was open ie no cot bars and freak out.
The Pillow took about a week to get used to and would end up on the floor but character bedding helped loads... she loves her "Peppa Bed"

Shes now 23mths and has never got out of bed during the night even though she can. Even in the morning she just lays there chatting to her teddies!

sweetkitty · 24/06/2010 13:36

DD1 - took the bars off her cotbed on her third birthday

DD2 - 2 1/2 needed cot for DD3

DD3 - 23 months still in cot, no plans to move her

I always said I would move them once they learned to climb out but they never did, I am of the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" category, a 3yo is much easier to convince to stay in bed than an 18mo.

RunforFun · 24/06/2010 13:39

3.6 years .

Do I hold the record ?

EnglandAllenPoe · 24/06/2010 13:42

DD - about 2.5 - though really she could have gone in sooner - Daddy made her a cut-down size bed specially to fit the room (v small) ..which she loves..

Ds - still in travel cot and wil prob be util 2 at least

they are in the same room but with a stairgate between them as DD was marauding over the poor wee boy.

i think this one is more about what you can manage safely with your kids/ the space available than any particular 'right' age.
