my ds is currently asleep on me (21mo) and has been for 2.5hours! this week he did one day with 10mins nap, one 35 mins, one 1 hour...you get the picture!

he's due to start pre-school full time in sept - i have a nanny starting in 10days time as i'm back to work f-t, too - is there any point in trying to drop the nap or should i tell her just to let him be?

what about pre-school though? they don't nap, do they? yikes!

Both about 3 1/2 but that is unusual (but very nice!)

mojomama · 28/05/2010 18:01

what about at pre-school? do they still nap there? confusion!

No, they would do their 2 1/12 pre-school session, come home and have lunch, then ZZZZ.

flabbyribs · 28/05/2010 19:56

My son stopped at 4 when he started full time school. I did try (and still do sometimes)to get him to have a small afternoon one at weekends and days off school.

PrettyCandles · 28/05/2010 20:11

If they need to nap then they need to nap.

Ds1 dropped his nap age 6.
Dd dropped her nap age 4.
Ds2 stopped his (regular) nap age 3. He still needs to nap but refuses to do so in his bed. He falls asleep from sheer exhaustion in the car, usually on Weds and Thurs or Thurs and Fri afternoons.

I am interested in this thread. My DS is nearly 2 and sleeps for 2 hours around lunchtime but suddenly not sleepy at 7.30pm. We are wondering whether we should drop or reduce afternoon snooze.

13lucky · 28/05/2010 20:25

My dd is 3.10 years and still naps apart from Tuesdays and Thursdays when she is at preschool all day. But she still needs that nap at the moment. Am going to wean her off gradually over the summer though as she starts primary school in September. My ds is 20 months and still naps for about 2 hours every day.

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2010 20:25

13 months.

DanJARMouse · 28/05/2010 20:27

DD1 - 2yrs
DD2 - 2yrs 2 months
DS is 2yrs 6mnths and still naps but it varies from 10 mins in the car to 2.5hrs in his bed.

Butterball · 28/05/2010 20:27

My DS1 still naps and he's 5y 6m - he slept for over an hour this afternoon. My 2y 6m DS also naps and he'll nap for 2 hours easily.

SherbetDibDab · 28/05/2010 20:29

Ds1 - 2, 2 and a half ish.
Ds2 - About the same
DD - 18 months.

pippylongstockings · 28/05/2010 20:30

My DS1 dropped his nap at 4.8 when he went to school, even now at 5.4 he will have a nap at the weekend as he is knackered from school.

My DS2 is 3.6 and will go without a nap if you keep him entertained but he will have to be in bed before 7pm, and he is pretty seriously cranky from about 5pm.

I am amazed that others have dropped their nap before 4 years old - when my mum and dad went to school they can remember having a rest after lunch - they all had their own little mats that they lined up in the hall!

mrsruffallo · 28/05/2010 20:31

DC1- 2 1/2
DC2-Just before 2

hmmSleep · 28/05/2010 20:35

Ds will be 3 in august and still naps most days. Dd is 4.5 and still naps occasionally. It doesn't seem to effect bedtime (7pm).

Fleecy · 28/05/2010 20:35

DD is 3yrs 8mo and needs a nap around 3 or 4 times a week.

DS is 2yrs 1mo and naps every day for a couple of hours.

hmmSleep · 28/05/2010 20:36

My sister, a primary school teacher, says it's quite common in August for the new starters to fall asleep at the dinner table, poor little things.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 28/05/2010 20:36

ds1 was about four
ds2 still has about 2 or 3 hours at 3.5yo.

hmmSleep · 28/05/2010 20:37

Make that in September, am fixated on ds's birthday month!

bamboobutton · 28/05/2010 20:40

15 months, he went to bed easier and slept better for it too.

lovechoc · 28/05/2010 20:46

DS dropped regular afternoon naps at the age of around 2yo. but he does have the occasional nap if we are in the car. he no longer naps at home.

BrigitteBardot · 28/05/2010 20:51

DD 3.5 still naps 1.5 hours most day, she is very grumpy and unpleasant if she doesn't
DS, 22 months sleeps 2 hours a day every day.

Portofino · 28/05/2010 20:54

About 3. Though strangely was happy to nap at kindergarten during the week, but no way at the weekend. I SO missed it. We used to have sneaky afternoon sex sleep too!

BrokenBananaTantrum · 28/05/2010 20:55

14 months

Lymond · 28/05/2010 20:56

DC1 - 18 months
DC2 - 23 months
DC3 - still naps at nearly 4, without it affecting bedtimes at 7!

Which lulled us into a false sense of security so we had a DC4, who seems to be cut in the mould of the first 2

Helgicita · 28/05/2010 22:13

DS - 3.2
DD - 2.4 but still occasionally takes herself off and has a brief one on the floor/sofa - as long as it's not me who instigates it!
