what can your 19 month old say?

Bit worried about my DS, vocal, very vocal, bit limited language.

My ds could only say about two words at 19 months. At 19 1/2 months it was as if a switch had been turned on in his brain and he suddenly started to learn lots of new words. At 2 1/2 I can't shut him up. He gives a running commentary about everything that he sees, thinks and feels.

I have a friend with a DS who is 20mo who only uses a few more words than DS. But both can make a whole load of noises and are very responsive to instructions so we figure they'll catch up. Friend's HV has told her to offer her DS a choice of things and not to give him either unless he tells her which one he wants but I think that's complete bollocks!

Don't let it worry you, when my DS was 19 months if he wanted something he would point and say 'get' but he could understand everything we were saying to him. He's 3.5yrs now and never shuts up.

Well that's just it really its almost as if he doesn't need to bother as he follows all instructions (well the ones he wants too!) and can tell you all he needs to!

My daughter has been babbling pretty much non-stop since she was a couple of months old, a real chatterer. I think real words have been coming pretty slowly to her, though. My theory is that she is so chatty with her babble that she doesn't stop to listen much and actually pick up English. She's made up her own babble language, and is too happy with it. She had her first few words real pretty early, but didn't seem to pick up many as time went on. She's now acquiring them at an enormously fast rate, but she's nearly two. I'd say the acceleration began around the 20 month point.

At 20 months my ds could say

tractor

and that was it. He is 2.6 now and reasonably chatty.

My 20 month old says nothing apart from 'oww ahh'. I dont know why that of all things! Oh, and 'dada'. But not mama, little so and so! Im not bothered tho since elder DS was saying nothing at all at over 2 years but suddenly took off at 2 and a half and is pretty articulate now at 3, to put it mildly! Try not to worry. Im told the key is whether they understand you and attempt to communicate, thro grunts or whatever. If so, no probs likely. Which sounds like your DS.

If you ask him where most thigs are body parts, food, toys(Thomas, noddy, ball etc), people and clothes he will get them or point to them. He understands allot more than he can say.

But up until 17 months he only had a vocab of 7 words. He will repeat or try to repeat most things if i say 'Can you say xxxxx?'
It is just as if a switch turns on and they just start to cotton on! Try not to worry too much. I just try to read to him and will ask him simple and normaly the same questions through out the day until they click, then move onto something new.

Also may sound barmy, but if you are at home alone talk through what you are doing.

Mummy is putting away the washing now.
Mummy is making lunch. This is the bread, do you want ham? Lets get the ham from the fridge. Its cold in the fridge. The butter's in there, we need that too. Etc.

You will feel really silly. But it can help with language in a big way!

Oh he can also say

Which is one of his favourites.

Probably because his barmy mum is constantly asking him if he wants ham!

he's almost 20mo and you can tell there's a word explosion about to happen.. it'll come, there's no need to worry

oh, and toos (for toes) and shooooooes.

I was getting a bit worried at 19mo about DD but she has just turned 20mo and all of a sudden she is picking up new words every single day. She is very keen on animal sounds too. We got her a book that had photo's of first 100 animals (or something)and we go through them making the noises (of the ones we know ) and now she points and makes the right noise or if you ask her she will tell you without the book.

Really don't worry too much

Just a thought.... Do you all sit at a table for meals? DD started coming on in leaps and bounds once we sat a table and had conversations over dinner. There was nothing to distract her, and she wanted to talk with us.

Agree with the "switch" theory! DD is just 19mths and it feels like she's said a new word every day for the past week or so - very little said before that!

My ds has a lot of words for his age,is talking in sentences (sort of) can count and knows colours.has started attempting nursery rhymes.am genuinely not sure I could list the words he knows.. stupid but I just feel like I sound like I'm trying to show off if I say what he's like...

Wouldn't ever really do that-of course am proud of him as I love him to bits but am not bothered about him being super-clever,in fact am a bit of a crap mum!

It just seems to be what he is like really.they all have their own pace I guess?

And he's a crap sleeper!!

Oh and ps the general verdict on ds is that he's not normal!

As long as they are communicating and responding all is good I think.

My ds1 is 15 now. He could speak in whole sentences at 18 months: 'Give bottle now please'- that sort of thing.

His little pal hardly said a word till he was 3 - the mother was getting frantic.

Guess which one is the child prodigy getting top marks for everything and predicted A* in all his GCSEs?

fortyplus yep,it's just all too easy to think it's mapped out at this stage isn't it? Who knows how the little monkeys will turn out in the long run??

DS on the other hand couldn't speak at all at this age, at 3 he's within the 'normal' range for his peer group.

I wouldn't worry they all develop at different rates, DD can talk but she only started walking 3 weeks ago.
