Bit worried about my DS, vocal, very vocal, bit limited language.

OP posts:
Horton · 17/07/2009 15:41

When my DD was about 18 months she could say absolutely tons of things, maybe 80 or 100 words. Her little friend who is 5 weeks older could say mummy, daddy, milk and ball (I can't actually remember the words but there were way less than ten of them). Now that they are both nearly three, there is absolutely no difference in their language skills. Neither of them shuts up for one second.

Horton · 17/07/2009 15:43

There should probably be a after that but I can't summon one up. The constant chat is exhausting!

elliepac · 17/07/2009 15:46

my 17 month old has a vocabulary of precisely 5 words. However, she does understand what you say to her, can follow simple instructions and communicate what she wants (too clearly sometimes!). Don't worry, will come when it's ready.

christmasmum · 17/07/2009 15:49

My DD (19mo) is pretty much the same as those mentioned above and has about 50 recognisable words (to me!!) but if it's any help my Mum tells me that I said mama and dada from 18months, added absolutely NO new words until I was 2 years old, almost to the day, when apparently I pointed to the drinks and said 'Can I have a water please?'

I think the ones who talk a bit slower may be storing things up and waiting till they can say it properly!

Woooozle100 · 17/07/2009 15:51

at 19 months
mama
dada
eddeeee (attempt at dd's name)
nana (banana)
baba (bye bye)

at 20 months he learned the word car. That pretty much replaced all his previous efforts. He practiced it in all accents / inflections / intonations

at 21 months, he's getting very chatty - putting words together either himself or repeating stuff. Still all quite basic. And a 'car' still means anything with a wheel on it

OP, it seems really positive that he's already saying 4 things. DS2 has speech delay and he said nothing until 30 months.

Health profs only start to worry if they say nothing at 18 months.

He'll probably reach 'tipping point' shortly and start using lots more words. That actually happened to DS2 a month or two after he started uttering.

I'm sure all's fine with your DS

Bella21 · 17/07/2009 16:33

Shiney - you know you're lying. I have heard your ds say antidisestablishmentarianism

DD1 now 5.5yrs barely spoke at 19mths. Now doesn't stop even in her sleep.

DD2 is 22mth has been talking pretty clearly, using loads of words since about 12mths.

Midge25 · 17/07/2009 19:25

My dd, just coming up eighteen months, can say:

ta
doggy
dummy
all gone
dada
mimi (mummy)
bee
owl
spider
yup
no
hello
hiya
bye bye

But def understands a lot more...

maxybrown · 17/07/2009 22:29

I have found this quite interesting. My Ds is 22 months, just, and I always say, "he can't talk" but actually it isn't true. I have realised after reading this!

Christmasmum - what you said I think has some truth to it. The few words DS can say, anyone, any stranger could understand him, I wouldn't have to translate anything. It is like he won't attempt anything until he can say it clearly and properly.

He says lots of things from the back of his throat though too, but it's so odd because the words he can say are as clear as day. His understanding and reasoning are fantastic so I guess he WILL get there eventually. Getting very frustrating though

lagaanisace · 17/07/2009 23:48

Yes, comprehension is a crucial factor in discerning a problem. With DS2 it was clear that comprehension was delayed, too. I'm sure that if comprehension is there, speech will come.

maxybrown · 18/07/2009 00:01

Thanks....he definitely has no problem with comprehension, frighteningly so! he is very logical and forward thinking....yikes! I imagine when he does speak that he will natter non stop

tryingtobemarypoppins · 18/07/2009 10:32

Oh goodness, having read through, your LO's are generally saying lots more! I won't panic just yet as the 'switch' theory sounds good!

maxybrown · 18/07/2009 11:10

marypoppins, my DS can't say half of what everyone else can on here and he is 22 months. But like I said what he can say, is very very clear.

lagaanisace · 18/07/2009 11:27

Yeah, I really am sure he'll reach that tipping point soon. The point is, he does say some words.

Ledodgy · 18/07/2009 11:55

My ds 2 is 18 months.

Cat
dog
pepper (name of friend's dog)
mummy, mum, emma
daddy, dad, mark
hello
Hi
jack (yack)
eve (Eee)
Juice (duice)
dinner
dont do dat
dont you dare do dat
hot
bye bye
get it
thanks (danks)
milk
nanny
grandad (dangdad)
im stuck(used often don't ask!)
Out
outside
baby
horsey (orsey orsey)
night night
flower
garden (in da garden)
all gone
all done
mine MINE MIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE he has 2 siblings.
Oh no
oh dear
What (wha)

HOWEVER whilst my dd was like this at his age ds1 wasn't he could probably say mummy, daddy and nanny but that was about it. He's 3 now and can talk for Britain!

They all develop at different stages. Dp didn't talk at all until he was 4 and then suddenly spoke a huge sentence! He'd spent 4 years taking everything in quietly and then decided to use his voice.

I think siblings also factor highly. Ds 2 has 2 older siblings and seemed to be in a rush to catch up with them iyswim.

simpson · 18/07/2009 18:29

DD is 17mths and can say:

mummy
ball
duck
bath
ready (when about to throw ball)
more
up
down
spoon
bike
apple
no no no (at older brother)
drink
tea (and days it again & again till she is fed!!)
she can count to ten
bo bo (bottle)
bibit (biscuit!!)
poopot (fruit pot - pureed fruit)
rice cake
window
door

TBH there are more but I can@t remember

But she has only just started to walk in the last wk and can only do 5/6 steps.

Also her older brother at the same age just said "mummy" and "duck"

shinyshoes · 18/07/2009 18:31

Nothing she waves and makes a noise that could be hello or goodbye, the noise has 2 syllabuls

points to herself and said di di. (did it) after she has done something wrong.

That's it

shinyshoes · 18/07/2009 18:32

she's 18 months btw
