When do babies usually start to talk?

Ds2 is almost 15 months and can say a handful of words. I'm gobsmacked and think he's an utter genius as DS1 didnt start saying anything until at least 18 months (have a feeling DS1 may be slow though rather than DS2 a genius lol)

He can say
Boo
Bird
Bye
Hot
That
Ta (despite me never saying it to him and only ever saying thank you!)

He makes no attempt to say Mummy or daddy at all!

How does this compare with others?

DS 25 months says:

  • yes
  • mum
  • dada

but he can recognise:

  • all numbers from one to ten, and some double digit numbers (such as 33, 44 and a few others)
  • can recognise most letters, and can say the sounds for around 10 letters (m, b, c, s, o...)
  • can recognise many colors

Early speaking is (in most cases) not a sign of high IQ or higher 'intelligence' as babies/toddlers all develop in different ways. DS has been assessed for development and he spot on for everything, very advanced for complex instructions (can do puzzles aimed at 3 yo+ for example) but he was 24 months old when he said Mum for the first time.

We are seeing speech therapist, but I think he'll start speaking when he's ready!
