What words can your 15 month old say?

When do babies usually start to talk?

Ds2 is almost 15 months and can say a handful of words. I'm gobsmacked and think he's an utter genius as DS1 didnt start saying anything until at least 18 months (have a feeling DS1 may be slow though rather than DS2 a genius lol)

He can say
Boo
Bird
Bye
Hot
That
Ta (despite me never saying it to him and only ever saying thank you!)

He makes no attempt to say Mummy or daddy at all!

How does this compare with others?

fedup and damnit, don't worry! My ds said nothing at all at 20 months and only a very few words before he was two. He's now 2 and 4 months and his speech is coming on so well (although his pronounciation is still quite poor) - has just started to say short sentences, and is picking up words and phrases like nobody's business. They all have different time scales for these things.

cthea · 08/05/2009 20:22

DD2 is 19 months, she has few words (mama, attempt at sister's name, rara for dada, bye, attempt at water etc) but lots of signs and generally communicates well, we know what she means or wants. She is deaf and wears a cochlear implant so she's only been hearing properly for 4 months.

CarGirl · 08/05/2009 20:23

dd1 really spoiled me, no temper tantrums, could rationalise with her etc etc, then I had "normal"/"real" children!!

Her first word was "star" at 10 months

ConnorTraceptive · 08/05/2009 20:33

ds1 had lots of words at this age, ds2 is 14 months and has no words yet but shouts and chatters all the time. It does worry me sometimes that he has no words but i think that's because ds1 spoke exceptionally well from a young.

simpson · 08/05/2009 20:43

DD (15mths) is good at talking much better than her brother was at the same age

She can say:

mummy
daddy
bo bo (bottle)
fruit pot Comes out poo pot for fruitapura
bore bee - strawberry
more
ta
baby
no
dink (drink)
duck
ta
uh oh

When I ask DS (3) to do something I say he has till I count to 4 and now DD can say it with me

She is also trying to sing nursery rhymes with me (totally tunelessly!!)

SallyJayGorce · 08/05/2009 20:55

DD2 is nearly 14 months and hardly saying anything that makes sense to anyone except us. She says

Muh - for milk
Mama
Dada
Attempts her brother and sister's names
Hiya!
Uh-oh
Baba

Her big brother (3) was saying more than this and very clearly by his first birthday. Knew varieties of dinosaur etc by 15 months.

Her big sister was speaking in sentences at 16 months and had exchanges like this:
DH "If I'm your Dad, what are you to me?"
DD1 "I'm your daughter Daddy"

I guess number 3 is leaving it to those smart alecks and chilling out. If we have a fourth, it might not bother at all. Hard to get a word in with DD1 in full flow which is all the time, unless she's very sound asleep.

moomaa · 08/05/2009 21:08

my dd is 10 months and can say mummy, daddy, ta and night garden clearly, I want to show off because ds spoke a lot later than some of my friend's children and it's nice to be the show off one for a change!

sleeplessinstretford · 08/05/2009 21:20

my daughter is hilariously good at talking-she's 19months old now and was saying 3 word sentences at christmas-she 'reads' you choose all the time and we get random sentences like 'it's a windmill/volcano/waterfall'
she knows all her animals, all our families names, says she's thirsty/hot/tired,knows about 100 different food stuffs and asks for them by saying either 'melon melon melon melon melon' or if i say 'ask nicely she says 'yes please mummy a melon' I think mine is the 'freak' here though as her mates are still on mummy/daddy/car/dog/duck etc.
she's tiny and talky-and today said 'oh shit' when the guy on deal or no deal only had blues for his final two rounds...

bamboobutton · 08/05/2009 21:27

im getting quite concerned for ds after reading this thread.
he doesn't really say any recognisable words, he says dadadadada but says it all the time but not to us, same with mamamamama.

the only other thing he says is doydoydoydoydoy.

the posters with dcs speaking lots of words do anything specific to teach them or did the dc just pick it up from everyday talking?

toadstool · 08/05/2009 21:29

DD2 didn't speak at 15 months - it was all shrieks and giggles, plus attempts at 'Daddy'. 'No', 'Hurt' and 'Dit it' came in at 16-17 months. Now at 19 months she can say all sorts of things, usually on their own (very few two-word combos):

Mummy.
Daddy (also means teddy)
Atoo! (thank you)
Hurt.
Out! (as in, 'go away DD1', 'take that dish away', etc.)
No more.
More.
Nana (anyone whose name she doesn't know)
Bye bye
Doddy (dolly)
Miaow (dog)
Milk (both liquid and cup)
Pingu (penguins and pandas)

sleeplessinstretford · 08/05/2009 21:31

I am a gobshite and a stay at home mum-i have talked to/at her constantly since she was born. She has an older sister (14.5) who talks to her all the time and we try to not have the telly on during the day (only because i am a lazy bastard and would be sat watching it all day)
My other one talked well (and early) so i guess some just do-she seems to have comprehension issues though as when i say 'no' she either can't hear me or doesn't understand it...
my antenatal mums are stressing about their's not talking and i've had to tell them that in all this theirs are the normal ones and mine is the freak.

toadstool · 08/05/2009 21:40

Bamboobutton. How old is he? I can compare DD2 with DD1 and she was less chatty at 19 months - but talked endlessly by the age of 2!
I did the usual stuff: repeated back what they said, talked in the car, looked at them as I spoke [advice from a friend whose DS had speech therapy - a lot of parents speak to the back/side of their children's heads, apparently!], switched off ambient radio/TV noise.
I think LOs learnt to talk when they were ready, though. No method, just time.
Not sure about kids speaking in complete

bamboobutton · 08/05/2009 21:49

ds is 15m.

im hoping its not my fault because im not much of a talker and i actually feel quite silly talking to ds who can't talk back. im also concerned that he doesnt respond to his name, i have to say it a few times before he briefly looks at me before toddling off, which could be normal, im not sure!

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 08/05/2009 21:51

I'm glad you started this thread OP- I was starting to wonder if ds2 is lagging a bit at 18 months (I can't remember what ds1 was saying at this age because it's 13 years ago-far too long in the past!!).

Ds2 can say:

Dada
Mama
Duck-duck
No(very clearly. Was his first word )
'Allo. (With a sort of strange cockney-type inflexion)
There
This
'Es (Yes)

And that's it.

ConnorTraceptive · 08/05/2009 21:57

BAmboo. I must admit I think I talked more to ds1. DS2 seems to get caught in the rush and I don't have a much time to sit and talk to him like I did ds1. Even and meal times I find I talk more to ds1 because he can hold a convervsation which is slightly more interesting than. "yummy, fruit" or "ooh bic bics"!

I have started reading more to him now and do make a conscious effort to talk more

simpson · 08/05/2009 21:57

DD does amaze me with how many words she knows...

I also forgot to say she does a brilliant American drawl "oh man!" Think she got it from Dora the Explorer

It is sooo funny.

But she is not walking yet to guess her speech is ahead but her feet aren't iyswim...

izyboy · 08/05/2009 22:01

See I am hoping it is a bit like this: Some kids are more physical DD (18mnths): MAAAAAA! dAAAAA! TAAAAAA! occasonally star, car, book, teeth, iz(brother), ta, der (there). She knows if she shouts and points she will get what she wants. She walked at 12 months. Her brother who walked at 15 months could say 'bonjour' on holiday at 18 months as well as 'juice' and generally make it clear verbally what he needed. I am hoping thos os the case as some days she just babbles.

izyboy · 08/05/2009 22:03

Oh yeah said 'telly' really clearly the other day says it all I'm afraid!

Martha200 · 08/05/2009 22:15

DS1 who is now 6yrs, and always gets comments on his great vocabularly was saying about 60 words at 15mths. (I have the list somewhere.)

However, DS2 who is 15mths now says:

Mama
Dada
and hello (or rather o,o)

and signs for milk, juice and duck (not sure why duck!!)

On the other hand DS2 is MUCH more co ordinated physically than his brother at the same age.

I know we are all individuals, but I do find it amazing that since they both came from the same gene pool how similar and yet sooo different they are

moomaa · 09/05/2009 09:52

My DD is starting to be an early talker but her mobility is quite a long way behind other babies. DS much later talker (not much over 50 words at 2ish) but good at building towers, early crawler (5 months), late walker (17 months). Both children in 'normal' ranges, just different.

Gemtubbs · 10/05/2009 16:43

My ds is 15 months he says:

dad
mum
nan
grandad
light
juice
ta
row, row, row (row your boat)
duck
bath
hello

ilovespinach · 10/05/2009 18:55

ds2 is 16months and says

dada
mama
yes
sheep
duck
cow
train
car
nana
nice
joe
ei ei-o (as in old mcdonald had a farm)
shoe
go
tombliboo
daisy
hello
doggy
ball

sure ds1 said only mama and dada at that age...

ChairmumMiaow · 10/05/2009 19:04

DS (15mo)says

Daddy
Emily (his cousin)
Jenny (auntie - says nyenny or nyen nyen, and also, after hearing me say it, "Bad Jenny")
Dog
Ball
That (his favourite word)
Patch (the puppy)
No (his other favourite word)
Don't
hello
bye
eye
nose
head

he also does:
moo
cluck
baa
sssss (for snake)
and copies motorbikes for some reason!

Of course none of them sound anything like what they're meant to but they're vaguely recognisable to us (when you replace the first sound of the word with a 'd' in most cases) and he uses them repeatedly in context.

nolongerchunkybutstillapudding · 19/05/2009 13:47

guess i sound like a total wanker if i say that my ds (just turned 16 mo) can count up to 9???

doesn't count actual things, can only do that up to 2 or 3 if he feels like it. can talk in rudimentary sentences. mostly 'mummy get it' mummy DO it' that type of thing.

have lost count of amount of words he knows. i KNOW i sound like a wanker now but it is actually true.

it is generally agreed by those around us that he is a little freak. in a lovely way of course.

and before anyone feels the need to be mean to me if i sound like i'm bragging, everything else going on in my life at the mo is a bit rubbish so having ds to chat to really brightens things up. specially when he says 'kiss better'

PrammyMammy · 19/05/2009 14:00

My ds is 16.5months and has only just started copying our words within the past 4 weeks or so.
He says
Daddy
Mama
Missy (our dog)
Molly (cousin)
Ganny (GRanny lol)
Papa (my dad)
Dog and doggy
Bath
boobies
baby awwww (when pointing at my tummy)
What's that (when pointing at anything)
One, two, three weeee (when daddy lifts him like a rocket)

But really about a month ago he said nothing.
He always babbles away as if making a conversation, it is cute!
