Potty Training - What is Realistic?

As the warmer weather is now upon us (at least until Saturday, I'm told!) I have decided that next week is potty training week. I am off work too so we can stay in the garden.

DS is 2.5 yrs and we have attempted PT several times before. He just doesn't get it. He likes sitting on the potty but I don't think he realises he is supposed to pee in it.

I've read all the other threads about what age to start and what to look for before starting, but I can't find any practical advice about what I should expect. Should I expect a success rate of 1 in 3 wees in the pot? At what stage do I decide he still isn't ready and put a nappy back on?

DD is 15 months and I might even put her on the pot when DS is on it, just to give her the idea.

What do you think? Some realistic goals please!!!

My chldren must be the exception to that rule, Aloha! My boys were just over two when I started training them and they were reliable within a week or two, but my dd's, who were nearer three, took weeks and weeks. The difference for me seemed to be that at two they accepted being taught a new skill, while at three it became a power-struggle.

Oh well, your babies probably all slept through from three weeks as well

I'm not starting ds until he tells me that he needs to go. At the moment, he clutches himself and says 'Oh' when he is having a poo, but by then it is too late. He is blissfully unaware of weeing ATM.

I read that there are 3 stages:

  1. They are completely unaware of wee/pooing
  2. They are aware that they have been
  3. They tell you when they need to go, and hate wearing a soiled nappy.

Apparently, until you reach stage 3, it is not worth potty training, as any success will be coincidental. I understand that some children reach this stage early and some late, as in all milestones. My ds is going to be late, as he is in talking, and was with walking. I content myself that he will be in pants before going to school!

At least I hope so!

Only the first one (f-fed) managed that, Aloha, worst luck. It was all downhill after that, with DD2 avoiding sleeping through until she was 2.5yr, arrrgh!

I hate to say this Suedonim, but that really cheered me up

LOL! That's my good deed done for the day, then.
