Hi all. My eight year old nephew weighs 50kg. Is that normal? If not please what do we do?

50kg is 7stone 9 pounds.

My 9 yr old (will be 10 in may) weighs 6 stone and is 4ft 6

rubyslippers · 02/02/2009 13:00

so, about 8 stone then?

we need to also know how tall he is

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 02/02/2009 13:01

my neice is 10 and a half, five foot one or two and weighs I think it's 7 stone and a bit.

So unless he is very very tall, I think he is very overweight indeed.

belgo · 02/02/2009 13:02

If his parents have concerns about his weight, they should go and speak to their GP.

keels26 · 02/02/2009 13:04

My DS is also 8 and weighs 28 kilos, hes average height and slim so dont no if he might weigh less then average. It does sound like hes overweight, is he tall for his age?

countingto10 · 02/02/2009 14:42

My 8 yr old (9 in March) is 4ft 7 and weighs 4st 8lbs and according to Wii fit is in the ideal range for BMI .

Have a niece who is a good 2 inches shorter than him and weighs 7 stone. My sister is not doing much about it even though she is now being bullied and her DH has had a heart attack and requires bypass surgery at the grand age of 39 - none so blind as those that don't want to see !

BonsoirAnna · 02/02/2009 14:44

50 kg is definitely too much for an 8 year old. My nearly 14 year old DSS (who is quite big for his age) is in proportion (definitely not thin) and weighs 49 kg.

My DD is 7.5, is one of the tallest girls in the class and weighs 25kg so yes 50kg is very overweight.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 02/02/2009 14:48

Would definitely need height to tell, but this child BMI calculator should help if you know how tall he is.
I tried it with 50kg and a height of 140cm which is 5 cm taller than my almost nine-year-old DD (who is tall for her age), and it came out as very overweight.

elephantjuice · 02/02/2009 14:51

Sounds overweight to me. My dd is almost 8, I would say average height and build, and she weighs 25kg.

Do his parents think he is overweight? Can you say anything to them?

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 02/02/2009 14:55

ds1 is 4ft 9, not 4ft 6!

maamajullah · 02/02/2009 15:38

My sister sent me a text message this morn telling me she was worried. He is quite tall but i feel he does look overweight. And he eats very much too.

Eat less. Move more.

belgo · 02/02/2009 15:58

What exercise does he do? Is he in any sports clubs?

I would ask your GP for a referral to a dietician for advice on diet.

christywhisty · 02/02/2009 17:03

That does sound very heavy, My DS was 32k at 9 (I had to look it up the other day) he didn't reach 50kl until he was over 12 when he was 91st centile for both height and weight.

atowncalledalice · 02/02/2009 17:16

DS2 (9 this month) is 4'10" and about 5 stone (30kg?). He's tall and slim but not exceptionally so. 50kg is very big.

Does your nephew do any sport? What sort of foods does he eat?

maamajullah · 03/02/2009 14:23

he eats everything. My sister asked if swimming could help?

OP posts:
tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 03/02/2009 14:25

My ds1 is 7.8, and weighs 3 stone 6 which is 21.8kg.

Bubbaluv · 03/02/2009 14:40

Of course swimming would hep. All excercise helps. What sports does he play at present?
