What is/was your baby doing at 14 weeks old? Is mine quite advanced?

I'll get hung drawn and quartered for saying this, but mine eats food- feeds himself with a spoon as long as I put the food on the spoon for him. His favourite food is banana, he loved it and cries when it's all gone and refuses his bottle for it sometimes. He feeds himself 'finger foods' (only very basic things at the moment).

He laughs.

He laughs at ceebeebies when the characters or presenters laugh.

When I say 'dada' he says 'ah-ah'. When I make gurgle noises he copies me. When I squeel he squeels and then laughs.

He sits up by himself.

He loves anything colourful.

He laughs his head off when anyone says 'boo'.

He sleeps 11 hours at night.

He holds his own bottle.

He wants to stand up allllllllll the time, he's very strong.

If you say 'kiss' he opens his moth for a kiss, and 'cuddle' he puts his hands either side of his neck. And if you say 'kiss baby' he opens his mouth to kiss his newborn cousin.

And loads of other stuff.

He just seems really advanced to me. Do all babies do these things by 14 and a half weeks old?

Oh dear, haven't seen a Mumsnet feeding frenzy like this for ages, they're never nice.

Saw this earlier and thought I would stay off it, but its interesting to see a fair proportion of genuine and kind posts as well, so perhaps things are improving a bit.

BG - not hard to spot some v decent ladies on this thread.

Also, no idea if your baby is advanced or not, just glad that he's happy and having a great time in his new world!

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 18:27

lol Mildmannered, I'm sure they are. Everyone says my son's 'gorgeous but shame about the ginger hair' lol. When I was pg they kept saying 'God I hope he doesn't get your hair'. Us gingers do and half get picked on.

Oh, if it's a feeding frenzy, just throw in a fruit shoot and a couple of sausage rolls and leg it while they are distracted.

BabyGenius - if I was you, sweetie, I'd log off and enjoy your lovely baby, coz, as my ancient Nan says "They're not babes for long".
Don't take any notice of anyone else, just have fun with him.

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 18:29

People who say to pregnant ginger women 'let's hope your baby isn't ginger' are definitely arses . I even have a ginger relative who denies that her kids are ginger (they are 'chestnut brown'). What's that all about? Ginger self hate!

SJisontheway · 25/08/2008 18:36

BG - don't make any apologies - that's your choice - but when 90% of the feedback to your post is negative, you may be wise to realise you could learn something here...

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 18:36

Haha that's right that, we all say 'copper', 'auburn', 'chestnut' and cry ourselves to sleep at night when we get called Annie haha

To answer your actual post:

"He laughs" - laughing can start from 1 month and is common at 3 months

"He laughs at ceebeebies when the characters or presenters laugh." not sure, ds didn't watch TV that young

"When I say 'dada' he says 'ah-ah'. When I make gurgle noises he copies me. When I squeel he squeels and then laughs." Many very young babies will copy noises, many won't. Sounds quite advanced but babies generally start to respond from abotu 3 months onwards but imitation usually about 6 months.

"He sits up by himself." ds sat up happily in a bumbo but not on his own. sounds like good gross motor development, assuming he is sitting up on his own, with proper head control, not just propped up.

"He loves anything colourful." ALL babies love anything colourful and between 2 and 4 months begin to distinguish colours, so nothing special there.

"He laughs his head off when anyone says 'boo'." Laughing can start from 1 month onwards

"He sleeps 11 hours at night." ALl babies are different and this is no indicator of being advanced or not - ds didn't until 6 months, friends have babies that slept through from day 1.

"He holds his own bottle." No idea as ds was bf

"He wants to stand up allllllllll the time, he's very strong." Standing and stepping reflexes very common, can happen from 2 months, usual by 4.

"If you say 'kiss' he opens his moth for a kiss, and 'cuddle' he puts his hands either side of his neck. And if you say 'kiss baby' he opens his mouth to kiss his newborn cousin." sounds quite advanced, babies usually know their own names by 5 months so if you do something enough he may respond. if it doesn't take much repetition for him to do this sounds quite advanced, imo.

tbh you didn't need to ask this here, you could have gone somewhere like babycentre.co.uk or looked in a book like What To expect the first year. it does sound like boasting, and you did know the reaction you would get. but hopefully your curiosity is now satisfied and your perfectly understandable pride in your baby is fulfilled.

traceybath · 25/08/2008 18:46

He does sound a bright little boy.

However, its a bit like going up to a friend and saying wow have you noticed how slim/pretty/rich i am

We're british - we must under-play all our achievements and our children's too ;)

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 18:48

lol tracey I think you're right there!! It's a British thing.

If you can't boast about your PFB what can you boast about.
