DS not walking at 18 mos. No kisses, either!

DS will be 18 mos. on Valentine's day & is still crawling. He can pull himself up but doesn't want to even try to walk. Also, I've noticed that he doesn't kiss me or hug me , nor anyone else. Should I be more worried than I already am? BTW, DD walked late but kissed & cuddled early!

Have you discussed this with your hv? he's still within 'normal' boundaries for walking but the hugging thing is a little different. Does he smile,make eye contact,respond to your hugs and kisses and show affection in other ways?

hun as moon said i would speak to the HV isnt he due a check anyway at around 18-20mths? I know some little ones done wlak until 20mths and he may just not like kissing...my ds only kisses but i do fele its rather begrudgingly..lol...is he making eye contact etc and how is his speech as i have found the non walkers tend to have been concentrating on their language skills..where my DS grunts but is physically agile...am sure hes ok hun but just phone Hv to get her opinion

Thanks, feel better! He's extremely vocal, very active, smiles all the time, makes eye contact but is v. stubborn. Will talk to hv, tho.

im sure he'll be fine, i bet he's doing other things which are very advanced for his age??, my dd is having her 18month-2year development check this week, so you ds should be due one soon if you need to discuss anything, you could ask then??hth

My DS was a walker not a talker and DD was the opposite. Each to their own and all in good time.

yes, but 18 months?! And no hugs for mama...

friends of ours DS didn't walk until 22 months. We get hugs but we certainly don't get kisses... we get bites and damn, they hurt!

sansouci i wouldn';t worry too much about the hugs or kisses, my dd only started kissing relatively receently (she's 3.5 and now does it all the time).
Would think about his walking tho...is he making progress ie standing alone now, cruising more etc? Please don't just leave it, esp if you are worried. Yes, some children walk later, normal parameters are 10mo (ie early) to 20mo (ie late) but I would be concerned about an 18mo old who hadn't made much progress. I speak so strongly because a colleagehad a very late walker and was told don't worry, turns out child had a joints problem and by 2.5 was still not walking....
(not saying this is yr ds btw, I'm sure all is well but do ask HV as others have said and assess for yourself how his development is, as that's the crucial thing.
sorry, bit of a ramble on there.

How were his other motor milestones, sitting up, crawling etc ? Were they late? My ds2 has low muscle tone and co-ordination problems and didn't walk until about 17 months, he also sat up late etc. This is still within the normal range and is probably not indicating any problem but it might be worth talking to your HV.

My sis has ds 18mnths, saw her walk a few steps once but she's just not interested. Not very huggy baby either. Seems like she's just very laid back. Try not to worry.(probably easier said than done!)

ds didn't really start being kissy and huggy till well past the age of 3

Mines similar! 19 month although he walks, has never given kisses or cuddles till about 2 weeks ago, he sat on my lap facing me and brushed his little hands down my cheeks and said "ahh". of course i cried!
never gives hugs or kisses though.

My ds only started blowing kisses about 2 months ago, at age 2.2, and hasn't kissed anyone as far as i know. He doesn't go up and hug other people either, but is still a very sociable little chap. I would check with your hv re your dd, just for reassurance, but if she is pulling up ok, weight bearing etc, and is mobile, she will eventually walk, at her own pace though.

judging by these posts, you can see your little ds if fine and will start doing more in his own time..then it'll be kisses and cuddles all round

My daughter is 19 months (20 months on the 19th) and still does not walk. She only recently (past fortnight) began pulling up on furniture and cruising. She also only recently began cuddling. She was also late to sit up (8 months). She does speak, however. She even says, 'I want that' and 'I hold that'. I've put in a call to the next to useless HV so who knows. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

I often wonder if i have the tv on too much as DS is a little telly addict and spends too much of his time on his bottom staring at Phil and Fern! Maybe i will keep it turned off tomorrow and try and keep boredom at bay by some other ways...hmmmm.

This is all v. good news. I will get him checked over next week, I think. He's a stubborn little guy. Maybe he doesn't see any point in walking when he can crawl super-fast. He watches dd run around longingly, I think, but sticks to cruising the coffee table. As for kisses, maybe it's a boy thing or an English thing. (dh product of being sent to boarding school at 7 & doesn't approve of being "wet").

We're taking our daughter in next week. But to be honest, she's always been on the lazy side. She likes her sleep (13 hours/day) and enjoys chillin' on the couch (she climbs on no bother). She often sprawls on the floor w/her cuddlies and just babbles to them or climbs on our bed, lays her head on the pillow and relaxes. Even in hospital when she was born, the midwives all commented on how 'contented' she was. She walks on her knees quite a bit and pushes things in front of her, or walks w/s/one holding both her hands. She is very, very tall (37 inches at 19 months), and I wonder if that has s/thing to do w/it, but she's always been about 6 months later to develop gross motor skills.

I did not walk myself till I was 18 months old and was a total knee walker.

Hi expat! We saw the doc the other day cos ds having trouble breathing (acute bronchitis, apparently ) & I asked him, BTW doctor, etc. He checked ds out & pronounced him "lazy" . Much relief all round but dh is disappointed. Already had ds sitting in front of tv on unemployment benefits!

I mean, "has". V. ambitious for ds & dd, while I just want them to be "happy".... awwwww!

My ds is nearly 18 months, not walking and showing no signs of wanting to do so. dd was a late walker too, now you can't tell any difference from any of her peers, some of whom walked 9 months before her.

I find the hardest thing is that's all people ever want to know about him, 'Is he walking yet' (yes, I'm carrying him for fun), no one seems interested in anything else about him.
