Nappy Tantrums - 14 months and throwing hissy nappy tantrums, tell me everyone has them??

...no really I am, a very strong G&T. Constipated baby, already pooed once to terrible screaming and crying, thought I would let her crawl around nappy free for 2 mins whilst I ran the bath. A Doctor Pepper Moment, what is the worst that could happen? She waited until I was otherwise engaged and within one foot of the threshold to the bathroom, just one measly foot to move from carpet to tiles she solved the constipation problem.

Please tell me every 14 month old screams like you are killing them when all you are trying to do is secure a new nappy???

yep - perfectly normal - I have now switched over to pull ups as easier to do up while standing awkward child is standing up (it is possible to put normal nappies on in a satisfactory manner with them standing but takes more time)

Ooooo, pull-ups what weight can they go into those?

ermm don't know - they're usually availble in 5 and 6's (possibly 4/4+'s too but not sure on that)

oh and another thing (which I'm sure must be frowned upon on MN) is that if it's just a wet nappy (and no poo) I often don't wipe him . Make sure he gets a wipe in the morning, and again before bed but otherwise if it's just wet, whip one off and get whip the other one on fast.

ah-ha, we are in 4.5s so off to the shops...

My dd was very frustrated with everything about that age - now she is so much speedier with walking etc etc she is less cross about everyhting. Including nappies.

FAQ, I know what you mean.... sometimes a wet nappy just has to come on and off like the wind!

Yes, we use size 4 pull-ups because they're so much faster and easier to get on a baby that's trying to run away

mylittlepudding, that is music to my rather battered ears. DD can throw such a temper if I don't get the right object from the arm wave and the generic call of 'Dah!' first time. Also very frustrated as she is only just walking and wants to RUN!

I do have to laugh a bit when she is crawling away at top speed naked... that was until my poo incident tonight!

Oh god we've had nappy tantrums since 7mo, it's been a bloody nightmare every single f**king time! Now she just runs away from me instead of kicking and crawling away. Lots of poos and wees on carpet here. Especially in big sisters room... (Nice touch)

It would not be so bad if I did not get reports from my Nursery that DD is an 'angel' at having her nappy changed, the best in the blimin class, just lays there and giggles! Giggles my arse in parsley, I have to practically put my knee in her chest!!! To add insult to injury she is fine for my Mum too, just me then!

my dd often manages to stick both her feet and hands in the poo, no matter how quick I move the nappy. Then laughs. Then starts arching her back and trying to roll over to crawl away, rubbing poo everywhere as she does it. Very often a poo means an entire change of clothes for me and her

Lol hello there [coy flirtatious face] yeah at least mine is consistently awful for everyone. My mother looked like she'd been to world war two and back after the last time she changed her... I tend to sing 'if you're happy and you know it' and even when she's busy trying to kick me in the face, contort herself into a headstand so my grip on both of her ankles is null and void or stamp in the poo before she escapes, she still manages a clap or two in between screams...

yes, DS was like that at that age, made me really fed up, once it is on their feet it goes everywhere. He's now 18 months and grown out of it (I hope), mainly because he can understand what I'm saying more I think.

JB25 - LOL - if your happy and you know it? Hardly I made the mistake of singing 5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer the other day to which DD almost span herself of the change mat! I do love the image of your DD managing the odd clap, PML at that one!!

Hello again BBFly, not stalking you but sounds like your LO is really very similar to mine. I find that after i get completely frustrated with DD2, if she has a book or toy to play with it sometimes distracts her enough to get through a prticularly messy nappy - mind you you might have to clean said object aftrwards
Normally she makes the choice by shouting or walking off half way through to get said object and the first 2 are normally rejected with a certain sort of 'don't think to distract me from my tantrum' kind of rage. If i hold something as if she can't have it it generally becomes a desirable object and enough to distract - now all I have to do is to remeber to have these things to hand when i start!!
Hope this can help in exchange for your advice about the sleep.

They are funny pickles eh? Sometimes they really do cut their nose off to spite their face. I cannot get DD to understand that if she eats more she will sleep better and if she lays still for 2 mins the nappy will be so much faster than having to fight. However, she is only 14 months so I guess we might make progress as she gets older.

Good luck on the food and sleep. I give DD a 'Goodies' organix oat bar at 6ish. DD does not eat breakfast, maybe 90ml of milk and a yogurt if I am lucky so all day I am chasing the calories. I do find the protein helps plus the oat bar is low GI so its lasts longer.

On the topic of food and sleep, how much milk does she drink? And I find that my dd2 and other very GO-GO-GO!! babies are llittle and often feeders. We end up having something like six small meal-type snacks some days. Sitting eating for any length of time is sometimes highly inconvenient when you have surroundings to destroy.

Hi again BBfly, hope it helps. I'm going to try the protein thing tomorrow, actually Sat is a good time as its the day I get to have some breakfast so she'll eat what i have if I sit there and look like its for me [want what you can't have theme developing here}
LOL jelly my hairs quite desirable too - like the idea of little but regular snacks through the day - I've jst got to get myself a bit more organised. DD1 was always such a good eater and DS a good lseeper inspite of never eating much - now to combine the two....

My DD? This is about the measure of her day:

7am - 90ml
Yogurt, quarter of toast maybe, half a weetabix if at Nursery and all the other kids are eating!
9.30am - 90ml and sleep
mid morning snack, rice cake etc
Midday - lunch
1.30pm - 150ml and sleep
Mid afternoon snack, banana, rice cake etc
5pm - dinner
6pm - oat cereal bar
7pm - 200ml

So, it total gets 4 goes at a bottle and has about 550ml of milk. I have found that if she snacks within an hour of a meal you can forget it and cows milk makes her sleep better then formula ever did. She drinks even less milk now she is on cows milk but it seems to be more filling. So many of my co-mums have are saying I need to drop the 2nd morning bottle but she eats so little and does not have a massive bowel of porridge with lots of milk like their DDs do that I will keep the 2nd bottle until she drops that morning sleep. I need to make sure she is getting all the vits and calcium she needs after all.

DD is also very tall but rather lean! She is very racing-snakey!

Clutterdup - I was told that if you cannot get a meat protein in try grating cheese over their evening meal. When in desperation I give mash potato made with lots of milk with baked beans and cheese all mixed up. It is such a winner and really high in protein. Also very easy to eat when the baby is tired as not much chewing is required!

My DD too drinks lots of milk still but it is to make up for her lack of food the rest of the time. I can ususally get her to eat one good meal a day as she sits down for tea with her brother and sister and has what they have but often more goes ont he floor than in her. She had spagetti bolognese tonight so that went in her, if she has spanish omlette - high protein- that will mostly go on the floor or in her water cup - i try to get her to drink water with meals rather than milk so she might eat more but I'm not convinced.
I need to be more regular with her meals and snacks, she often only has milk for breakfast although will sometimes have toast, I'll try yoghurt she might eat that thopugh there'snot always enough time to feed her in the morning rush and if she does yoghurt on her own it goes in her hair

l Like the cheese and mash idea, thanks I'll try it. One of the problems is that she wants what the other 2 are eating whether or not she like sit, they both hate baked beans but if i serve it on bowls she might not see the difference
The cheese idea is good too actually as she was eating chunks o cheese at tea time today as her sister was - fingers crossed with all that in her tummy she might actually sleep better tonight.
