Oh bugger, I have always been a bit of a swearer under my breath.
But have just overheard DD 3 mutterring fucking child to her dolly
I know this is my fault and my parenting, but how do I react.
So far I have ignored it but will this encourage it ifyswim.
And what if it happens in public.

Now need to seriously address my language

oops I would just ignore it the soon learn not to say it

NaughtyNigel · 28/04/2008 09:31

I don't say the F word at home at all. I will mutter at work though.
DD2 has taken to screaming it when she is in a temper - has picked it up from some little gobshite at school who i have heard calling other children a range of sweet terms.
I wouldn't worry too much as long as she knows you can't say it in polite comapny or at school.

Thomcat · 28/04/2008 09:32

Oh poor you! Best to ignore / distract.

DP thinks he heard DD1 say it the other day. Luckily her speech is delayed due to having SN's so it wasn't hugely clear but he's pretty sure that's what she said. Horrid isn't it when you realise it's you they picked it up from!

i think the pc thing to do is ignore it - i always took a do as i say approach and my kids got a telling off

Shitemum · 28/04/2008 09:33

Thank feck I'm not the only one! I live abroad and every year some weeks prior to the annual visit home I have to instigate a 'clean up the DDs (i.e. my) language campaign' to make sure they're curse-free by time we arrive in the UK.
There's nothing worse than an angelic LO coming out with 'oh bloody hell' at Great Aunty's tea table

mishymoo · 28/04/2008 09:33

We've had the same in our household but with "fucking hell" and "fucking idiot"! The 2nd was me while driving but my DH is famous for saying "fucking hell"!

My DS is 2.10 and at first we just started ignoring it but when he starts to sing it out loud (thinking he's amusing), we tell him not to say those naughty words and it seems to stop him for a while. Needless to say, we are now very careful with what we say!

dizzydixies · 28/04/2008 09:35

its fuck sake here

or bloody dog

or my most cringeworthy was top of voice 'dickhead' in toys are us after a particularly bad road rage experience outside 5 minutes previously

Nosnik · 28/04/2008 09:36

My son has always heard me swear, he has repeated it but I just ignore it. Now he is six he knows what all the "mild" swear words mean and why I use them. He has heard the f word at school and doesn't know what it means.

I think its safer that he knows them and that he mustn't use them at school etc than to hear them and not understand! (when he asked what bugger meant I got sweaty palms and told him he'd find out when he was MUCH older)

Nosnik · 28/04/2008 09:39

I must say it works, if I swear he gets on his high horse and tells me how rude I am. He called me a 'bad mother' the other day!! I kept a straight face as long as possible then had to go upstairs.

noddyholder · 28/04/2008 09:40

Priceless My ds once turned to a crowd in a queue we were in at a gallery and shouted C'mon ye bastards' like some deranged pirate! He was4 we still don't know where he heard it!

On a partucularly stressy day when I was quite depressed the dog had been pissing me off all day by chewing things/doing the loo in the house and I had just given the kids a bath - I was drying them when I noticed the dog licking DS1's bottom and I shouted expletives at him but couldn't have told you what until...

Next time I gave the kids a bath the dog did the same and DS1 (about 3 at the time) shouted "dot lick my arse you ditty bastaaaad"

Oh the shame

I do not ignore swearing - I tell them that it isn't a nice thing to say and that mummy is naughty if she says it. I don't swear much though - honestly!

noddyholder · 28/04/2008 09:44

We never swear in front of ds but he loves to say the odd word to get a reaction which I ignore or scream about depending on my mood.

brimfull · 28/04/2008 09:44

I hate "shut up"

that was as bad as swearing when I was growing up,as well as "liar"

schneebly · 28/04/2008 09:45

Noddy - maybe he meant to say blaggards pirate style?

schneebly · 28/04/2008 09:46

yep we dont like 'shut up' here or 'stupid' or 'hate' here - the are classed as not very nice.

charliegal · 28/04/2008 09:47

awful thread title...was a bit apprehensive about opening it.

noddyholder · 28/04/2008 09:47

I would buy that schneebly but he said it twice .And did the arm action and everything. We laugh now but it was sooo cringy at the time half the people were high brow arty types and they just stared!

you should start by addressing your highly offencive threadtitle.

You know, a lot of us have school age children who come and peek over our shoulders now and then while mumsnetting.

shrinkingsagpuss · 28/04/2008 09:50

I am a closet swearer too, but luckily the worst thing DS has picked up is "stupid woman" when I am driving.

"what's that stupuid woman doing mummy?"
"don't say that darling... oh.... stupid woman, mov eout of the way"!!

Just stop. once you decide not to swear it does come quite easily.Everyone has their own limits with this sort of thing though.I have muttered the very odd shit or f word in extreme circumstances and ds may or may not have heard but I would never tell him to shut up or call him a name etc because to me thats unacceptable
