So what's the earliest anyone's DC has started walking?

....just wondering really. DH and I were discussing this earlier and we really had no idea.

What's the youngest that anybody's child has taken their first steps?

(and no, this isn't some sly way of telling you that my DD walked early. She didn't let go of my hand until 16 months. Well we are a bit of a lazy family.....)

Piffle · 07/12/2007 20:24

ds1 was just before 9mths

tortoiseSHELL · 07/12/2007 20:25

I walked at 8 months apparently(!).

My children ds1 - cruising at 8 months, walking unsupported 12 months. (but he crawled at 6 months which was a bit of a shock!).

Dd - walked 12 months, lots of cruising before that.

Ds2 - still isn't walking, he is 19 months now. He is cruising madly though, and is minute, with really diddly feet - he only weighs 22lb, and his feet are very nearly a size 3F.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 07/12/2007 20:26

cruising is different to the crawling aswell..all of mine were cruising by 6.5mths but dd1 just didnt have confidence to let go where dd2 and ds were a lot more forward.

Scotia · 07/12/2007 20:27

My dd4 walked unaided at 8 months, dd1 & ds at 9 months, dd2 at 10 months and dd3 at 11 months.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 07/12/2007 20:30

Haven't read the thread but..... (bound to win)......(drum roll)......

15 months!

Proud emoticon needed!

He got his teeth early and I clearly remember saying to my Mum that he would prob do everything else late. He was obv listening. Sat at 8 months. Crawled at 11. Walked at 15.

Is now 6 and totally gorgeous!

Blandmum · 07/12/2007 20:31

dd was walking unsuported at 11 months

(ds was 13 months)

Blandmum · 07/12/2007 20:32

She also crawled at 6 months and at 4 months was rolling to ge to things she wanted. I never had that nice time when they sit and play!

tortoiseSHELL · 07/12/2007 20:56

martianbishop - that was exactly the same with ds1!!! His best friend is 4 months older than him, and was well into that 'sit with toys arranged around him' - I was really looking forward to it. But New Years eve, aged 6 months he started crawling. Couldn't sit, but could crawl VERY fast. So never got that lovley time.

Ds2 more than made up for it - he would do nothing but sit and play - didn't crawl till over 12 months!!!

tortoiseSHELL · 07/12/2007 20:56

LOVELY not lovley!!!

lizziemun · 07/12/2007 20:57

DD1 rolled over at 6 weeks.

Bum shuffled at 5mths

Walked at 9mths.

crawled at 18mths learned by copying a friends child.

She was a pain from the moment she learnt to rollover as she never stayed where you left her.

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 07/12/2007 21:01

Just under 10 months I seem to recall.
Twas early enough!

lizziemun · 07/12/2007 21:03

I meant to add dd2 is 13weeks and always wants to be standing. She doesn't bend in the middle .

NineBabiesDancing · 07/12/2007 21:20

My DD was cruising around the furniture at 8 months and walking independantly at 10 months.

But walking earlier is not necessarily a good thing, I hadn't finished baby proofing the house for a crawling baby and then everything had to go up another two foot !!!

TheRedQueen · 07/12/2007 21:33

A friend's DD walked at six months. I felt a bit sorry for her (the friend) actually - she said that she felt a bit cheated and as though she hadn't somehow had her "baby" for long enough.

walkinginaWILKIEwonderland · 07/12/2007 21:35

Cruising at 7months, walking few steps at 9months, walking independently at 10 months.

I suppose I am reasonably proud but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't mean that much. Other babies same age do other stuff my DS doesn't do.

mm22bys · 07/12/2007 21:36

My DS1 was 15 months, but had been cruising for months, and could crawl too fast everywhere...

I walked at 10 months, and am I the world's greatest athlete, or were my parents the bees' knees? No...

We will be ecstatic if DS2 walks at all, even it's not till 5 or later.

The age of walking means nothing other than that particular skill has been obtained at that time....

ExDhsNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 07/12/2007 21:43

Not anywhere near as early as others - ds was crawling at 6mths, cruising at 8mths and walking alone the day before his birthday.
But I do have to say he had lots of sense even as soon as he could walk and rarely banged into things or fell which was weird.

themoon66 · 07/12/2007 21:49

If we are talking about unaided walk (no hand or furniture holding) then DD was 16 months. She was a very fast crawler so had no incentive to get up and walk.

DS was about 11 months, but I think he had incentive due to being a crap slow crawler.

One of my work colleagues had a little girl who both walked at talked at 6 months. It looked weird and creepy to be honest.

frogs · 07/12/2007 22:06

Haha, mine were all utterly immobile until well after their 1st birthdays. Couldn't roll over, couldn't get into a sitting position by themselves, no crawling, nothing. Twas fab -- I could plonk them on the floor with a pile of toys, go off and make a cup of tea, and know they'd still be where I'd left them when I got back.

They all bum-shuffled from 13 months onwards, walked at 18 months, 20 months and 19 months -- the last one only walked then because I was so sick of her bum-shuffling holes in her trousers that I took to putting her out in the garden with a bare bottom.

PortAndLemonaid · 07/12/2007 22:07

Yes, mm22bys, but I don't think anyone here has suggested that early walking is a sign of brilliant parenting or incipient genius, though. It's just another thread, like "who was the heaviest Mumsnet baby?" or "who on Mumsnet had the shortest labour?"

onepieceoflollipop · 07/12/2007 22:15

frogs same with my dd1 - 20 months. My friend's dd was exactly the same which was great when people made little comments about her being late to walk. We used to sit and chat and drink coffee and eat biscuits. The little girls used to do the same (but with milk not coffee!)

Also late walkers mean less time faffing with stair gates etc...

knickerelasticjones · 07/12/2007 22:56

wow - so many replies.

So it looks like age of walking runs in families. Which is a good thing really as DD1 didn't walk until 16 months. So I hopefully have a good few months (or indeed years...) before I have to start coralling DD2 to keep her in one place.

.....phew.........

DGD walked at 8 months, it was a nightmare she had no spacial awareness, her father on the other hand didn't shift himself till 19 month

bunnyhunny · 08/12/2007 08:52

ds took his first unaided step (between me and dh) at 8 1/2 mo, was walking about 12 steps at 9 mo. Now he is 10 1/2 mo he is walking everywhere - bending down to pick things up, turning round, standing.
I started walking at 9mo, as did my brother. I think it does run in families.
I liked it when he used to stay in one place...

seeker · 08/12/2007 09:02

My dd was a very late walker (nearly 17 months, but a freakishy early talker. She was also practical circular and bald. It was very strange - she was a Bhudda typa figure sitting on a rug holding conversations in a very clear and very posh little voice at 11 months
