well they are still here - it was only a threat to stop them constantly bickering.

I like to think that when I make these threats what they actually hear is "Uh Oh, mum is really fed up with us, maybe we should do as we are told for once" ( they are 5 and 8 BTW)

I never shout .

My children never watch TV.

I have never given them a fruit shoot, sausage roll, or taken them to McDonalds .

they eat all fruit and vegetabeles always say thank you and please.

Hang on , whats out the window .... a pig flying ..

pmsl at tomato fertiliser

shouting at kids is part of life, I'm afraid. God, you would have to be up to the eyeballs on something, or seriously in denial, never to shout...

brandnewhelsy · 09/08/2007 15:52

I'm shouty - doing it more during the summer holidays and trying to cut down.

Dd1 shouts back, (they become immune after a while, so it's all a bit pointless really and now I'm just raising a shouty girl ) but dd2 (3) gets upset, so I really am trying to stop. Bit hard to know what else to do when you're being ignored for the hundredth time, though. I say things like "I'm going to start shouting in a minute" which sometimes works, and calms me down.

Countingthegreyhairs · 09/08/2007 15:56

If it makes you feel any better MMG, I turned in to a fishwife once I became a mother. It distresses me because I always start the day thinking I will do better ... and then I don't . Always feel awful after shouting. It's counter-productive too 'cos you just have to shout louder to be heard next time but I never seem to learn.

I shout much more in the summer holidays and my red wine consumption goes up by about 30%.

Try to do that "talk to kids so kids listen" thing and I manage it for about half a day but then it turns in to,

"If you don't get your shoes on in the next 30 seconds Mummy is going to lose it"

I'm taking up yoga in September ...

ladylush · 09/08/2007 16:00

lol at the 30% rise in red wine consumption

handlemecarefully · 09/08/2007 16:01

Good grief - erm yes, fairly frequently

onlyWotz · 09/08/2007 16:03

I do shout sometimes, mostly its things like

'wait a minute....I'm on the loo!'

"put on whatever's clean, but not a jumper!'

handlemecarefully · 09/08/2007 16:03

iota - I have been known to make similar threats (all received with calm equanimity)

meandmyflyingmachine · 09/08/2007 16:05

I do shout.

And I also use exaggerated threats a la iota.

Normally involving dissection....

Theclosetpagan · 09/08/2007 16:06

Far more than I wish to

motherinferior · 09/08/2007 16:07

Good god yes. Sometimes I scream. Occasionally I stomp, too.

flightattendant · 09/08/2007 16:11

whast wrong with froot shoots?

pointydog · 09/08/2007 16:18

shout? do I ever. de temps en temps

I actually enjoy using all ranges, tones and volumes of my voice. I think there's something quite empowering in that ( @ empowering). I like to be a family that shouts occasionally. It's not just restricted to me.

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/08/2007 16:41

LOL at OnlyWOTZ.

I too really only started shuting once my DS1 turned 2ish. I don't shout everyday, but I certainly did this morning, usually for shock factor, like if I have aksed them to do something 75 million times, and they are ignoring me, then I can really let rip, like this morning "GETOFFTHETOYBOXIT'SNOTFORSTANDINGON"!!!! a proper belly screech, it did the trick, but I don't like doing it much...

rebelmum1 · 09/08/2007 16:55

I do but apologise after and say i shouldn't have shouted but i was cross because you da di daa di da etc - i use it as a barometer for my tiredness and need for a break.

thomcat · 09/08/2007 16:58

Errr yeahhhhhhh!
Blimey, when I beacme a Mum I din't become non-human!

I do try not to shout 'stop shouting' at them though!

But hell yeah my voice gets raised.

"STOP" is a common word to be shouted in our house or out on the road!

rebelmum1 · 09/08/2007 17:02

my shouting always coincides with milkman arriving, neighbours being about in garden - i'm more ashamed of being heard, they think i'm a battleaxe dp heard me shouting from the garden with window closed the other night and came in to tell me to shush i even surprised myself at how loud it came out.

RGPargy · 09/08/2007 17:04

Who DOESN'T shout at kids? Even if they're not their own?!!

muppetgirl · 09/08/2007 17:06

yep.
shouty mummy here....
not all the time but is needed occasionally to achieve maximum effect without smacking.

EscapeFrom · 09/08/2007 17:10

I do yes, but in my meagre defence my oldest son has had officially noted difficulty in listening. So I shout, I squeak, I sing, I tap things, I snap my fingers, clap, stamp, bellow, shriek and wail. All after speaking first, of course.

But my GOD I have a gob on me. I have the louudest voice of anyone I know, and always have had. (Except maybe my brother)

pointydog · 09/08/2007 17:11

oo my shout is not at all my maximum effect voice

it's just a let's-show-we-can-have-a-shout-occasionally vocie

muppetgirl · 09/08/2007 17:15

...then again when I was teaching I would go over to the little blighter causing trouble and say very quietly 'stop now or bad things will happen...'

They always believed me.

(Head told me in 1st term to be as non-secific in threats as poss as you loose less lunch time supervising them)

jellybrain · 09/08/2007 22:49

I like that Muppet and am off to practice it in my creepiest voice. They'll probably just laugh but it'll take their minds off what ever diabolic thing they happen to be doing at the time!

paolosgirl · 09/08/2007 23:05

Yes, I shout when it is required.

I also have a "police lady" voice as my dd and ds call it. Usually reserved for ticking off various feckless idiots who have stepped out of line in the course my day

Don't worry about it - I think a good healthy shout from time to time is not a bad thing.
