Toddler obsessions...what's yours?

DS2, aged 21 months is totally and utterly obsessed by little matchbox cars...

Always has to have one in each hand at home, virtually all the time... brings them to the table at mealtimes and lines them up around his plate... has to have a couple when we go out anywhere.... takes them in the bath with him (gets them clean anyway!) and runs them along the sides...even takes them into the cot with him (I've given up worrying about the "not suitable for under 36 months thing..." )
It's beginning to get a bit silly - lately he's started trying to carry about 5 around at the same time and then gets distraught when he ends up dropping one...

No interest in any other sort of comforter....

Should I be worried? (I'm not at the moment.. but...)

I do, but not to the point of getting distraught, he is just extremely fond of, and points them out at every opportunity:
Taxis and padlocks
He is three on Wednesday

And no you shouldn't be worried

Cars, dinosaurs for ds2, ds1 is a hoarder so will collect all sorts of junk. Am aghast at some of the things I find in boxes secreted around his room.

lou33 · 26/04/2004 22:08

Ih and they both share a fascination for Zombies. They are 5 and 3.

Hulababy · 26/04/2004 22:08

Baby dollies. And has been for ages. She is now 24 months and adores her babies. At least one has to come with us everywhere. And Baby Annabel is favourite.

iota · 26/04/2004 22:11

my ds1 was similar to yours at that age - he is still obsessed by cars of all sorts and we have teh crates of HotWheels plasic track to prove it.

Ds2 is obsessed by swords, guns and any other lethal implements

ds1 is nearly 5 now and ds2 is 2.5

lou33 · 26/04/2004 22:13

Oh yes, I forgot the lethal weapon love .

suzywong · 26/04/2004 22:18

Lou when we finally get out boys together to play you'd better get those hotwheels tracks at the ready

BadHair · 26/04/2004 22:18

Both dses (3 and 1) are obsessed with cars, and ds2 is at the same stage as yours - there's one in his hand at the moment while he's snoring in his cot. He clutches them so tight, even in his sleep, that I've given up prising them off him as it wakes him up.
Ds1's current obsessions are (apart from cars) his babies - a raggedy collection of stuffed teletubbies, ducks, an ancient postman pat and his latest addition, an action man on a bike. He tucks them all up under a blanket and reads them stories.

iota · 26/04/2004 22:20

oooh ds2 likes Action Man as well- but mainly taking AM's clothes off - should I be worried?

lou33 · 26/04/2004 22:28

Agree suzy. Mine will want to have zombies as the racing driver though.

jodee · 26/04/2004 22:44

DS has a bright orange shark that we 'won' on Brighton Pier on his third birthday, a year on he still chases us around with it, and you can imagine his delight at discovering 'Brucie' on Finding Nemo! Now he constantly does Bruce's horrible laugh - drives me cuckoo.

goosey · 26/04/2004 22:46

my ds, just 2, is obsessed with footballs. 'Gutgorl' was his first word and he absolutely loves them. But he doesn't sleep with one. He loves matchbox cars too. I think it's normal Mo2.

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 22:51

Saying every night at bed time its not dark outside over and over and over and over and over again. His toy obsession is a monkey and it is his baby apparently.

polly28 · 27/04/2004 22:13

My ds has loads of cars but shows no interest in them at all. He's 19 months is it too soon to be into cars ,should I chuck them?.He loves making tea , shutting doors ,money and keys.

ZolaPola · 27/04/2004 22:15

Mine's a total car fiend too, also loves trains - Thomas, Toby etc. Don't know where he gets it from as hate cars myself and never pushed them, must be innate to him. At least he likes animals too, lions, cats full works. It seems to be quite an obsessive age.

hoxtonchick · 27/04/2004 22:25

fire engines. i quite like it, we get to hang around outside fire stations & i can ogle firemen . and i feel a little sad when i see one & he's not with me....

boingyzebra · 27/04/2004 22:55

2.5yo DD... Varies every few days... latest have tended to be "Han-moles" (her plastic animals, especially zebras (honest, I did nothing to encourage that one!) and horsies, plus a soft reindeer). She lines them up around her food bowl at mealtimes. Some trains and vehicles, esp. a red model steam train (major battles with big brother for that...). The tractors that she knows she can take into water or sand. Identifying "her mummy", "her beebee" (baby) for everybody/thing of interest (ie., big and little versions of same things...). Also, sad people in books always want to "Go back back back back HOme..."

boingyzebra · 27/04/2004 22:56

ps: DS is 4.5yo and still obsessed with trains and traintracks.

GillW · 28/04/2004 09:39

We have a big Thomas fan here (and Toby and Percy and James and .... he knows them all). Even when he tumbled skiing a few weeks ago he told us he'd "come off the rails"

Toothache · 28/04/2004 09:45

My ds has a rather annoying obsession with......

...... Fire Extinguishers!!!!

Every where we go he sees them and asks "What's that?"... I usually say "You tell me"... and he replies "It's a Fire Stingwisher, Mummy...Yeeeeaaaah!!" then usually followed be "Oooo there's a red one!" or "Oooo there's a green one!".

What the fu..?
And they are EVERYWHERE... tell me it'll end soon!

He likes trains too and that I can handle, but when your 2.9 yr old DS has a tantrum in a shop coz you won't let him hold the Fire Extinguisher it gets quite tiresome!

motherinferior · 28/04/2004 09:59

All toddlers are mad mad mad

slug · 28/04/2004 10:21

The sluglet is obsessed with things being "All nicey clean now". Unfortunately this means everythime there is a speck of food on her hands she will demand a wipe. Given her natural toddler propensity to attract dirt constantly, it's becoming a bit tiring. She'll also insis on cleaning everything, usually with something equally grubby. Yesterday this inbvloved cleaning the TV screen with a wipe covered in chocolate, then rubbing her grubby hands over the screen while announcing "All nicey clean now!"

Furball · 28/04/2004 10:36

My DS (2.8) is sooo into, ahem, cough, cough - Jeremy Clarkson (cringe) He thinks hes wonderful. Gets it from his dad (Hopefully DH is not quite so in love) DS is also a big car fan and can name them all, which is scary, sometimes even we have to do a double take on the really small pictures to see if he is right and most of the time he is. He is also heavily into the alphabet and loves anything ABC, all he sings these days is either the Jeremy Clarkson video music or the ABC song. Tell me he's normal!!

Frenchgirl · 28/04/2004 10:46

dd (4.5) is mad about lions (due to lion King obsession, wants to play simba when she's bigger). Developping puppy obsession as we are getting one in July, as well as training puppies obsession (which she tries out on me 'sit mummy' then makes 'clicker sound', then 'good girl mummy' in patronising tone)
HELP!!!! She needs to train daddy, not me!
