Toddler obsessions...what's yours?

DS2, aged 21 months is totally and utterly obsessed by little matchbox cars...

Always has to have one in each hand at home, virtually all the time... brings them to the table at mealtimes and lines them up around his plate... has to have a couple when we go out anywhere.... takes them in the bath with him (gets them clean anyway!) and runs them along the sides...even takes them into the cot with him (I've given up worrying about the "not suitable for under 36 months thing..." )
It's beginning to get a bit silly - lately he's started trying to carry about 5 around at the same time and then gets distraught when he ends up dropping one...

No interest in any other sort of comforter....

Should I be worried? (I'm not at the moment.. but...)

When dd was little - horses - still it obsessed.

When ds was little - boobs - still is obsessed.

CountessDracula · 28/04/2004 10:49

Oh god dd's is water - she just loves playing with it. She follows me around the kitchen saying Otter Otter (water) until I give her some in a plastic cup + lots of other containers to pour it between.

Puddles (same I suppose as is water)

Stickers (though this seems to be passing)

Twiglett - When ds is not obsessed with breasts, he too is obsessed with dinosaurs.

mammya · 28/04/2004 10:54

dd is obsessed with princesses and pink. She's very girly, unlike me, don't know where she gets it from!

fisil · 28/04/2004 10:58

Animals still - but we're still only 15 months! Dog is the big one right now - and anything farmyard, which says "ooooo".

Brother used to be obsessed with pipes and make my mum trace where all the pipes in the house went to. He didn't grow up to be a sewage inspector!

soyabean · 28/04/2004 11:02

Fierce animals esp lions and tigers.

marialuisa · 28/04/2004 11:09

DD is obsessed with letterland. It's kind of nice but I realised I was humming the songs when i was in a meeting yesterday!

Twiglett, have you got "How do dinosaurs say good night?" and "How do dinosaurs get well soon?" Would recommend them if you haven't read them already.

Putting things in 'the machine" - which he got from Storymakers. The 'machine' is usually down the back of the sofa so we have lots of conversations which go like this DH: "Have you seen the X/Y/Z?" ME: "Have you looked in the Machine?"

However the 'machine' is variable. It can be a bin, or down the back of a radiator and the other day after his nap I found all the toys/books/pillows from his cot on the floor. "I put them in the machine, mummy". It really is an obsession though. He gets very upset when thwarted. Like Zebra's dd he is also obsessed with matching up mummys and babies. As when I called a newly planted tree in our road 'a baby tree' and ds said, "But where is his mummy?". I pointed at a nearby tree and said, there she is and ds said, "They will cuddle each other and look at the moon and the stars". He's a soppy thing.

Wallace · 28/04/2004 13:43

ohh yes fire extinguishers! ds used to make me read them too. He also liked fans (especially extractor fans, and the ones in the bottom of refrigeration units in shops...)

emsiewill · 28/04/2004 15:32

dd1 used to be obsessed with hospital programmes and especially ones that showed babies / birth. Dd2 used to have a thing about "Do not" signs (you know, red circle with line through the picture of what you should not do - smoking for example). We'd be driving along in the car, and she'd suddenly shout "MUM, MUM, MUM, QUICK" whenever she saw one. She'd shout so loud that we nearly crashed on a few occasions.

coppertop · 28/04/2004 15:56

Ds1 has always been obsessed with helicopters. I've even found myself pointing up to the sky and saying "Look! Helicopter!" even if ds1 isn't with me!! The shame....

The current favourite is drinking-straws. He's not happy unless he's got at least one tucked into each pocket of his jeans and one tucked into his waistband. God we must sound mad.....

AussieSim · 28/04/2004 19:03

Buttons/switches, lights that hang from the ceiling, noses - anybodies ... he is only 15mo

InternationalGirl · 28/04/2004 22:23

DD4 - her obsessions include helium balloons (particularly mylar ones), flowers (steals them from anywhere she can get one!), umbrellas (takes hers to bed with her) and lately she just HAS to wear mums knee highs. Might have to start buying her some of her own!!

Paula71 · 28/04/2004 22:26

Ds twin1 (27 months old) hates, absolutely hates his hands getting dirty - as soon as he gets so much as a fleck of dirt of any kind he holds his hand straight in front of him demanding to be wiped!

Ds twin2 obsesses over how their toys are arranged. When he goes for his meals he arranges them just so and they better be there, in the exact same place when he comes back. He also likes to take a little toy police van to bed, until recently it was the plastic cat from the Little People toys!

Both of them have to have their little toy rabbits when they get into their car seats.

I am so glad to hear it isn't just my two!

Furball · 28/04/2004 22:28

Coppertop - I did similar on Sunday at the supermarket. I'm so used to having DS with me that when I went round a corner of the aisle I said 'weeeeee' in a really loud voice. Then horror struck as I realised DS was at home. Everybody within earshot looked down at the ground, whilst I calmly smiled and walked off. God knows what they thought!

hatter · 28/04/2004 23:43

DD1 was obsessed with her wellies or "shellies". She would insist on sleeping in them (some battles aren't worth fighting) We would sneak them off after she'd fallen asleep, then she'd wake up in the middle of the night and scream "MY SHELLIES" until we put them back on.

Also obsessed with shutting doors, making sure everything is in its rightful place and cleaning. Unless I actually want her to do any of the above.

DD2 is a simpler soul - her only obsession is Milo. Although she did go through a phase of wearing DD1's pants, superman style, over her clothes.

MumOfLeo · 29/04/2004 14:26

My ds, 14 mos, loves ceiling fans, ceiling fans, ceiling fans! And any sort of door or drawer, particularly those containing hazardous or breakable things, and those that can pinch his little fingers. Sometimes I wonder why we even bother with toys.

ticktock · 29/04/2004 15:26

Slug & Paula71 - my ds is 16 months and exactly the same. The slightest speck of food, dirt etc on his hands and he demands to be cleaned. You can imagine the scene when he went to the beach for the first time, fell in wet sand, and got it on his hands AND his face.
Was obsessed with anything on the ground, too, ie insisting that twigs in the park, fag ends etc on the floor of the playground had to me removed before he would continue on his way. This one seems to have faded though thank goodness, was starting to consider orange vest and bin bag on outings.

hatter · 29/04/2004 18:57

DD2 appears to have developed a new obssession. With her "fertychile". (which, apparently she didn't do before going to bed last night). We have absolutely no idea what a fertychile is....

muddaofsuburbia · 30/04/2004 13:36

Ds (19mths) is obsessed by Cbeebies theme songs and I mean all of them! I must sing them in their entirity on demand (usually in public).

He gets most irate if I don't know the words. As a result, last night in the bath he ended up singing "BRUM BRUM DUM DEE DUM SOMEFING SOMEFING SOMEFING!" at the top of his voice. Anyone know the words - or is he destined to be a kareoke loser?

kiwisbird · 30/04/2004 13:53

Browbeaten · 30/04/2004 13:54

My 18 mo ds is obsessed with dom dank eggin - that's thomas tank engine to you :0 and my 3.6 yo dd is Angeline Ballerina (more like norman wisdom as not blessed with daintiness)

charlieplus3 · 30/04/2004 15:18

My dd 23 months is obessed with Annie the movie and three of her M7S puzzles which come with handles. She has to put them together in a certain order and wont start one unless the other is done IYSWIM and also has taken to carrying them everywhere, even car trips

charlieplus3 · 30/04/2004 15:19
