So how old is too old to be sleeping in a cot then?

current argument with my MOTHER

DS went into a bed at 2

DD still happy in her cot

MOTHER finds it strange

so write the top age that it is acceptable for a child to be in a cot please

neither of mine made it to 2 - because they both started climbing out and it was a safety hazard.

(could have got a lid fitted I suppose)

unkess they climb out then it would be whenever they don't fit

I would say before 3 but not 4 would be fine

they are too old to be in a cot when they can climb out. unless they can climb safely of course. tell your mother to butt out

When they are in greater danger from climbing out of the cot than they are from falling out of a bed! (Although an 18 year old might find it a tad cramped )

DS2 will be 3 at the end of November - been climbing out for nearly 2yrs .......suppose we'll have to move him to a bed soon though...........we know he loves sleeping in beds as he slept on them on holiday - just need to get arse in gear!

Who cares? if they're happy and safe in the cot, leave it. Ignore your mother!

When they don't fit, or when they can climb out if it's dangerous for them to do so

Or when they want a bed because "I am 12 now Mummy and my friends are laughing at me"

my dd is two next week and she is staying in her cotbed till she can get out of it

LOL @ franny. But in a way I agree with her joke- I think if the child is happy and safe then it's fine till the age when their peers start looking puzzled/questioning/teasing.

Climbing out rather than age.

Who cares as long as they sleep. Dd, who will be 3 in 2 months, still sleeps in a high sided travel cot. She can get out but, most crucially, she doesn't.

for me its climbing out that's the signal

but I really thought she would have by now

my dd never tried t climb out, and we finally decided just after her 3rd birthday earlier this year that it "was time". She was so excited about going into a bed too, so it clearly was right for her!
If she had tried to climb out of her cot, however, it would have been the very next day iyswim.

Mine didn't try to climb out either. But she was getting interested in big beds, and I have a baby on the way, so at 2.5 or so we got her a big bed. She loved it, but after a week was grieving for her cot (aka babyhood, I suppose) and asked to take her nap in it. I let her, and she climbed out and fell.
After that, we dealt with mourning in safer ways

What does it matter really as long as they're safe ? My older 3 were all in beds at just 2; ds3 is 2.9 and still (just about) fitting into his beloved grobags. He sleeps in a very large cotbed so there's no incentive to put him in a bed at all.

DS1 was in a bed a few months ago - 2.2 maybe? Can't remember.

DS2 needed the cot, so he had to come out. He'd still be in it otherwise - he LOVED his cot.

DD is 5 & still sleeping in a cot (one side taken off). Her 7yo brother would be in there instead but he finally got too big. Can't see the problem, myself.

i agree with most posts on here, if they fit and they are safe (ie not climbing out) and you have no other use for the cot dont worry, its a pain when they go into a real bed, they can get out and it can be an exhausting process! the older the better id say.

unfortunately with new baby coming my dd went into one at 20 months....now 3 month on she's finally settled and doesnt get out once, thank god!

dd1 was over 2yrs old.

dd2 was out of her at 18months and into a double bed . she was massive though and outgrew it quickly.

dd3 is staying in hers till she climbs out of it.

what? outgrew a double bed??? snigger

har har you know what i mean. i wouldnt recommend putting and 18month old into a bed.

i would say based on my own two, just over 3yrs, mine stayed in their cots till 21/2 because they were using the toilet so easier to take them
