My DD is 2 and a half months and I was chatting to a friend about what words to use to describe boys and girls bits??

A friend uses 'nunu' for girls. For some bizaare reason I have started to say 'bits and pieces'!! thats sooo wrong, any suggestions or do you just say fanny??

when I hear 'vulva', I think 'car'.
A big, boxy car.

DD is 2 with slight speech cuteness - she would call it a 'wulwa'. Maybe I'll tell her to call it that.

sorrell · 24/08/2006 21:14

HC - that's exactly what DH said!

Steppy1 · 24/08/2006 21:14

....we call it "foo foo" But I have presonally started saying "fanjo" because it makes me laugh so much....thank you mumsnetters, fanjo is a great word

sorrell · 24/08/2006 21:14

Oh, he said that to ds, not to me! (I know)

mears · 24/08/2006 21:14

Do you know even I call my vulva my bottom

I have never used the word vulva to describe my 'bottom' - I only ever use the term in my job.

What is so bad about not saying it?

Gillian76 · 24/08/2006 21:15

Franny, following the link from mears' Wikipedia, I found this which might answer your question

mears · 24/08/2006 21:16

well done hovely

Blandmum · 24/08/2006 21:16

I just like words to be nice and specific.

Most sixth form boys I have taught have been astonised to know women have three holes, you know!

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2006 21:16

but pointydog, why not say vulva instead of pumpum?

Ellaroo · 24/08/2006 21:16

I don't think a child using the word vulva is rude at all. However, for me I wouldn't choose it because it just seems a bit too descriptive and actually brings a visual picture into my head when I hear it...probably because of something to do with biology books and them labelling everything, but it somehow seems too graphic.

Hadn't thought about Pointybottom's point before about demoting etc...but we've called it that now!!!

mears · 24/08/2006 21:16

Gillian76 - hovely beat you to it

Ellaroo · 24/08/2006 21:17

So sorry Pointdog! Must have had bottoms on the mind!!!

Gillian76 · 24/08/2006 21:17

We call it bottom her too, but tbh I'm not completely happy with that.

I am all for using the correct terminology, but also sensitive to them "fitting in". Sad I suppose.

Blandmum · 24/08/2006 21:17

It is useful if they know the right words, because it makes my life easier in y7!

Peridot30 · 24/08/2006 21:17

i agree with pointydog. whatever you call it, it has nothing to do with sex it is just a word for them to use 2 let you know if something is wrong with it.

hovely · 24/08/2006 21:17

really, martianbishop, that is surprising and a bit depressing.
How do they think the respective functions are carried out?

WideWebWitch · 24/08/2006 21:18

Have skimmed the thread now, and ha ha ha ha ha at hunker's minky winky fluffie booby or whatever it is! hahahaha

But blimey, front bottom (what I grew up calling mine, incidentally), woo woo, moo moo/DOWNSTAIRS!/BITS/ make me go ewww. And downstairs especially for some reason - well, is your 'upstairs' your breasts then?

So come on, what do you all call it when you go to the doctor, do you say "my 'bits' are itchy/broken/whatever" ? Spill!
(I would say vagina and vaginal to a dr btw)

Gillian76 · 24/08/2006 21:18

Fascinating stuff!

Blandmum · 24/08/2006 21:18

Hoever I am quite taken by MNetters fango.

Hate bum hole though.

Blandmum · 24/08/2006 21:19

that is their use of fanjo. I haven't seen anyones fango other than my own !

hovely, they all think we pee through our vaginas.

they have a multi use organ, they think we are the same!

hovely · 24/08/2006 21:20

thanks MB, I guess I can see how that arises

Gillian76 · 24/08/2006 21:21

mb, my DH (also a teacher) had a conversation in the staffroom last year during which one of the female staff was astonished to discover she had 3 holes. What's more it was as a reslut of a comment my DH made!

Blandmum · 24/08/2006 21:22

This is the first thing I have to teach to the upper sixth when we restart school! Sigh!

pointydog · 24/08/2006 21:22

Aw, one phone call and I've missed so much in 10 mins!

hovely, would that be raphe as in 'ralph fiennes'?

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2006 21:22

oh christ, antenatal classes are stuffed with people who don't know that women don't pee out of their vaginas.
it's a common misconception.
