Baby not crawling at 8mo - should I worry?

I'm not sure about this. It seems from a quick google that this is verging on a bit late.

My others were well up and about by this time, and ds1 walked just before 10mo.

Ds3 isn't even holding himself up on all fours - he can just about roll, but hardly does it, and he cannot make his way across the room at all - he wants to stand up and is pulling himself up on his knees, sort of thing, by holding onto the chairs/my legs etc but no sign of crawling.

I wondered if it is to do with his tummy muscles as he seems to have a diastasis, and I don't know if that affects this sort of thing?

Should I see the HV or the GP about it? Or neither? he is happy otherwise.

DD wasn't crawling at 8 months but was fairly shortly after. DS is still in the normal range so I would wait a while before raising any concerns. I think your other two sound like early developers.

Rooners · 05/09/2013 13:13

Thanks Forester, that's good to know Smile

Mine never crawled! She didn't walk til she was 18 months old either - but HV said was all in the "normal" range.....

hillyhilly · 05/09/2013 13:15

My dd was 11 months when she crawled and 17 months before she walked, she is a very cautious girl which us why the walking was late, she was able to walk long before then but wouldn't. I did worry at the time but needlessly as it turns out.

BlingLoving · 05/09/2013 13:16

8 months doesn't sound too late. And some do skip straight to walking. I'd agree your others sound like early developers. Keep an eye out, but I would not worry.

TallulahBetty · 05/09/2013 13:16

Not late at all. DD was 12.5 months and I never crawled at all - straight to walking at 17 months.

Wishfulmakeupping · 05/09/2013 13:16

Me and my dsis both missed out the crawling stage and went straight for walking at 11 months.

SavoyCabbage · 05/09/2013 13:19

Mine couldn't roll over at 8 months. I remember because I kept putting off my 8 month check. she was/is perfectly normal and walked ay 13 months.

Rooners · 05/09/2013 13:22

Oh I feel better now.

Thanks everyone. Savoy, he only rolls a little in his sleep iyswim, he won't do it deliberately when he is awake - I keep reading about other babies getting from one place to another in various ways, the only thing he can do is kind of go from sitting to flopped on his front, but then he is just a stranded turtle Smile

He tries to stand and walk, when I hold him up but his little feet go all pointy and into each other like a tiny ballet dancer, it's very sweet but not much use to him!

He can sit very confidently though, which is good I suppose.

DS wasn't crawling until after 10 months and now (at 1) is only just getting the hang of walking. And he's considered quite an early developer by a few people I've spoken to!

Poppykat1 · 05/09/2013 13:25

Mine only started to crawl at 10 months but then started walking at 11 and a half months.

TallulahBetty · 05/09/2013 13:27

DD didn't even sit til 8 months. Now that IS late Shock

Longtalljosie · 05/09/2013 13:28

DD didn't crawl till 9 months. I met a baby this morning who didn't crawl at all - just started walking at just before a year!

RussiansOnTheSpree · 05/09/2013 13:29

DD1 couldn't sit till 9 months. And she never crawled. She didn't walk till 16 months. It's a dyspraxia thing. But in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter. I never crawled either and walked very late (also dyspraxic) and it hasn't exactly held me back. It'll be fine. Grin

SoftSheen · 05/09/2013 13:33

I though that the average was nine months? Some babies never crawl anyway, they just go straight to walking.

sparkle12mar08 · 05/09/2013 13:33

I know children who didn't crawl till 14 months and didn't walk till 20+ months. Give it at least a few more months before you start to worry Smile

ladymarian · 05/09/2013 13:34

I really wouldn't worry, 8 mths is still young. DD1 didn't crawl until 10 months and didn't walk until she was 15 mths. She did (and still does) everything in her own sweet time!!

VisualiseAHorse · 05/09/2013 13:36

My boy couldn't crawl till nine months, and now at sixteen months, he can run faster than me.

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 05/09/2013 13:37

My DS is nearly 11mo and has been bum shuffling / crawling for about a month. Out of our group of 8 babies from the same NCT course and same age, 5 can move and 3 can't - so I wouldn't worry!

tabbycat7 · 05/09/2013 13:37

DS1 started crawling at nearly 14 months, and he only ever rolled over once! He's now a perfectly healthy, normal if bus obssessed almost 8 year old :) DS2 crawled first at 12 months, DS3 at 10 months but he didn't sit until then. DS4 has been crawling backwards since 7 mo and forwards since 9 mo. I was hoping he'd be late crawling like DSes1 and 2!!

If you're worried talk to your health visitor but he sounds perfectly normal

I thought 8 months was on the early side for crawling
DS never got up and crawled on all fours, he dragged himself around from 8 months and got up and walked at 10 months.
Think DD was about 9 or 10 months when she crawled properly and became super speedy until she walked at 13 months.

neversleepagain · 05/09/2013 13:40

I was a childminder before I had my own babies, the babies I looked after all crawled and walked at such different times...

Crawled - 6 months, 8 months, 10 months, 12 months, 14 months.

My twins are almost 12 months and still not crawling, close but still not there.

SmeeHee · 05/09/2013 13:40

My DS1 started walking at 9 months (unsupported steps but very wobbly and fell over a lot) and was walking confidently by 10 months. He figured out crawling sometime between then and 12 months. Grin

In his case it was probably due to the fact that he hated being on his tummy (reflux) and was putting all his efforts into learning to walk!

Thinking about it I can only think of a few of babies I know who were crawling at 8 months (one was crawling at 5-6 months which was scary!) Most seemed to master it at 9 months plus.

There is a huge range in the ages at which babies hit the "milestones"!
