Can 2 year olds ride a scooter?

My DS is currently 19 months and I want to know what everyones DC could do at 2 in terms of riding a scooter or a tricycle or one of those trikes with a handle for parents.

In September when my DS will be 2 he will be changing to a new nursery. I'm currently choosing between a few nurseries but we will be using buses to get there so our commute is part of my decision. I can't decide if it would be better to take a longer bus ride with less walking (possibly more boring for him) or a longer walk and short bus ride. The walk is up/down a hill so I'm not sure how much I would trust him on a scooter even if he was capable. He would be too slow walking and while a pram is a possibility it's not my preferred option.

6 months seems an eternity when trying to guess what a toddler will be like/capable of!

If you get a mini micro then they are meant to be able to do it from 22 mo so I think you aren't far off!

Oh and DD loves her trike that you push - she can't peddle yet at just 20mo but chooses it over her buggy every day.

DS is 3.5 and only just mastering scooter and bike riding.

My nephew is just 2 and can scoot but VERY slowly. I think at just 2 a pram is the best option really.

Yes it they can, micro scooter is brilliant for little ones but you might find that they end up going a little bit too fast once they get more adept.

Also, you need to think about when you are on the bus itself, as good as the smart trike type things are they probably aren't the best thing for on a bus especially at busy times as they can't be collapsed.

My dd is two and has been scooting for ages on a mini micro scooter. Certainly from 18mths.

It depends on the child tho, she got it quickly as she just wanted to do the same as her brothers.

I see lots of toddlers on them at school.

I have got my 2 year old a ozbozz my first scooter. Can't praise it enough. She learnt how to do it in a day. It is from 2 years so perfect size. Please google it

With the mini micro you can get a strap so they cant wizz off and its easy to store out the way on a bus or hang off a pushchair etc, they are light and easy to carry if need be.

Depends on how they pick things up physically. My dd didn't start using her mini-micro until she was 3. My ds was scooting everywhere at 18m. You also need to consider road-awareness. My ds was very good on his scooter but I had my heart in my mouth every time he scooted off ahead on a pavement as I was worried he wouldn't stop at the road. They can go very fast on scooters especially on a slope.

Ds got a mini micro scooter for his second birthday and had no interest in it whatsoever until a month ago (he's now 2.9) and I can't get him off the bloody thing. He's really good on it and picked it up really quickly once he showed an interest.

Get a strap, but yes, mini-micro from 2 should be fine. DS could manage it and he had only started walking at around 17 months so I was quite surprised. He did have a big sister and an adventurous disposition, which probably helped a lot, though.

my ds is 3 in a couple of weeks and really still has no idea on a scooter. He also hasn't got the hang of peddling a bike and has only just in last 6 months or so moved himself along on wheeled toys. He just doesn't seem to be interested in this type of thing, so like others have said it depends on the child

Thanks for all your replies. I've googled the mini micro and ozbozz scooters and will be going out to check them out next week. Oh and I'm very pleased to hear that straps exist to keep him in check!

mini micro also make one with a little seat on it for real shorties, which can be removed as they get older and more confident.

DS has a mini micro (2.2) which he nagged me for incessently over the period of about a month. It's lovely to see him happy, and he no longer gazes longingly at other childrens' scooters, but it is s...l...o...w.

Be prepared to walk veeery veeery slowly behind your DS. Until the moment he 'gets' it and then be prepared to run like a bat out of hell

Ds could ride a micro from about 18 months. But dd was about 3 before she mastered it. It depends on the child.

My DS can ride a scooter. He is 2.5. I wouldn't bother using it as a serious mode of transport though, I've seen rocks moving faster

My d d got a mini micro at age 2.3 but she's still not yet into it at 2.7. Although she's active i still use the pushchair more than I would have imagined a year ago.

Ime the bus wins every time. If you'll be near traffic you'll want something you can control.

Yy to Mini Micro scooter.

BUT don't rely on it being your only mode of transport for your DS. Half the time I carry the scooter and push the empty pram while he examines every leaf or pebble on the road walks.
DSs2 and 4 were mad keen on their scooters from before they were 2; DSs1 and 3 not so much. Totally depends on the child and the phase of the moon.

Dd2 scooted slowly on her mini micro from age 2 I think but it was great for getting around because she would let me pull her after having a go for 5 mins herself. Because I'm short it was easy to do this even with no strap. This was our main way of getting around for months! Much easier to get on buses/down the highstreet with than a pushchair.

DH also found you can hook one handle on top of your shoulder and hang the thing on your back if needing to carry it whilst having hands free for bags/holding toddler.

My 2 and a half year old has been using a scooter for a few months with ease. However, it takes about 200 times longer to get anywhere than usual!

You don't need to pay out on a mini micro for a 2yo to use a scooter. Both dd2 (who only has one hand making it harder) and ds were using an ordinary three wheeler (the sort that are about £10) from before 2yo. They also fold up quite small for tucking away.

Only thing is that it does take time to get up to a reasonable speed. We took ours to Butlins and they spent a week scooting round, and then they were as fast as you like. Dd2 was just over 2yo, and ds was a couple of months off being 2yo when we did that. After that they were pretty much as fast as me walking.

DS is 3 and only just mastered it. I can't see DD (20 months) getting it for many many months yet. I have not got dc who are blessed in the physical coordination department though
