Nowhere near crawling at 9 months. Should I be worried?

DS2 is a chubby little lump who eats like a horse and likes nothing better than to be carried around all day. He can sit by himself, but I'd never leave him without cushions as he throws himself back, safe in the knowledge something/one will catch him. If I lie him on the floor he wails after about 2 minutes, but can just about roll onto his tummy from his back (he seems to have forgotten how to roll back onto his tummy though). Should I be worried? I'm fed up of carrying him and am going to have one very misshapenly large bicep on the beach this year!

Ds didn't crawl till 11m, I think that's totally normal.

Don't worry! He'll do it when he's ready. DS2 didn't walk til he was nearly two and I was worried but you would have no idea now looking at him!

I was about to post this thread OP! DC3 is 9 months tomorrow, as round as a beach ball and cannot crawl or even roll... I try and do tummy time, but she HATES it and gets very distressed. She happily sits, playing and entertaining herself for longer than the other two did, so I count my blessings on that score.

I wasn't too worried, thinking 'they all get there in the end', but I read something yesterday that said children who miss out the crawling stage sometimes have poorer spatial/ balancing skills than average.

I think she might be a bum shuffler eventually... But in a lazy way, quite enjoying the fact the older two can still play Lego in the same room as her, as she can't crawl over and try and stuff it in her mouth!

My eldest was 14 months before she crawled. It doesn't matter, it they're going to to it they'll do it when they're good and ready and not before. :)

OK, thanks everyone! I'll keep hoiking the little lump around for a bit longer in the hope that eventually the thought of moving will appeal to him (I currently even turn him over at night several times, like a little pig roasting on a spit )

My friend's DS never crawled and went straight to walking as did she. My friend is absolutey fine and has no problems with spacial awareness.

My ds didn't crawl until the week before he was one - just up and whizzed across the floor as if he'd been doing it for ages.

And he only crawled for a few weeks as he'd already been cruising, and as soon as he walked he ran. But his co-ordination etc is fabulous at 6.

He sounds gorgeous, OP, my DS 1 was a Chub ball like that and crawled at ten months. He was pulling himself up to stand at eleven months and walking properly at thirteen. And now at nearly three he never spots running and is solidly built but with no Chub at all.
With DS2 I am just nor going to worry about it. Apparently my big brother crawled at thirteen months, and walked immediately after! He is a skinny runner now

DS2 didn't crawl until the week after his first birthday, but could pull himself to standing from about 10 months. He cruised from about 16 months, then took his first solo steps at 17.5 months. He took to walking very quickly & was walking outside within a week, as opposed to DS1 who walked at about 12.5 months but couldn't walk outside for a couple of months as he was quite tottery.

My 2nd DS didn't crawl til he was well over a year. On his first birthday he could sit upright but that was it. Convenient, actually, as we were on holiday in Crete and hit a massive heat wave. I could pop him under the umbrella and know he'd stay there safe. Very glad he didn't learn to crawl that particular week!

He was a blissful laid-back little thing, sounds very like yours. He slept from 6 weeks, and is still very easy going as a teenager. I expect your DS sleeps well too.

It never really worried me, probably because he was my 2nd baby. As all his checks were fine I didn't have to worry that there might be any underlying problem.

As everyone else is telling you, it sounds fine, Lucy.

Ours didn't crawl till 12 months, and didn't walk till 16 months (I also didn't walk till 15 months so it may be a family trait) despite being a good early sitter without support at 21 weeks. Being a huge pumpkin-headed child, and 99th height/weight centile probably didn't help either. Also having huge amounts of tots and fun things to do constantly all day every day with no need to try to go anywhere by herself probably contributed. Parheps try boredom coupled with attractive things (food!) placed a little too far from her reach?

How to get your child to crawl? Spend ages on Ebay buying a used Jumperoo to give your 11 month old a way to use up their energy and frustration - send your OH to the next county to collect it and then your child will immediately decide to start crawling that morning.

At which point the Jumperoo became invaluable as somewhere safe to put him when we needed him to stay in one place.

Some babies who never crawl are dyspraxic. But not all babies who don't crawl have dyspraxia.

No need to worry. My ds started crawling at 12 months, just for a few days before he started cruising.

My DS1 didn't crawl til he was 10 months but pulled up straight away and was walking by 11 months. DS2 is 15 months and didn't start crawling til he was about 13 months. He's 15 months and has been diagnosed as hypermobile which basically means double jointed with weaker muscles in his legs. He's still not walking but they all get there eventually. If you are still concerned by 12 months then definitely get it checked out but don't panic!

My 8.5 month old has been very slow with her movements, only in the past two weeks started rolling. She has been going to physio to help a bit and the physio lady has told me that she is able to do it all, just one of hose "cosy" babies, ie damn lazy! She also said the average walking age is 16 months, people expect much more much sooner, and that in many ways a child taking longer to walk is a good thing as it gives their spine and skeleton enough time to develop before putting strain on it.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is dont worry, I dont think it matters too much when they do what, as long as they remain interested in whats going on around them and you dont have the feeling that development is slowing down, either physical or mental/emotional.
