Nowhere near crawling at 9 months. Should I be worried?

DS2 is a chubby little lump who eats like a horse and likes nothing better than to be carried around all day. He can sit by himself, but I'd never leave him without cushions as he throws himself back, safe in the knowledge something/one will catch him. If I lie him on the floor he wails after about 2 minutes, but can just about roll onto his tummy from his back (he seems to have forgotten how to roll back onto his tummy though). Should I be worried? I'm fed up of carrying him and am going to have one very misshapenly large bicep on the beach this year!

Thanks all, that's interesting tubtoes, and yes he is otherwise very chatty and alert and nosey. And whoever up thread said he's probably a good sleeper (I'm on my phone and can't scroll up, sorry) I wish!! His 'clingon' tendencies continue all evening, waking up every hour or so in his cot until we go to bed and take him in with us. Then he's all cosy and happy and goes to sleep very easily, but continues to wake up every few hours (yawn)

Sounds like my DD2, she is 9.5 months and nowhere near crawling, she only learned to sit really well at 8 months, and is very happy to sit and play with toys. She can roll but is not that bothered about using it to get around. If I put her on her front she just flips on to her back.

I do worry a bit (DD1 was a demon crawler by 7 months and was into everything by this age) but love threads like this for a bit of piece of mind!

I think it is just their more laid back personalities. At 4 DD1 would still rather play with household stuff - building dens with cushions, blankets random crap etc - than toys and still has masses of energy, maybe this time I have a nice quiet girl toy lover?

Funnily enough ds1 was quite late with things too, did commando crawl around 10 months and crawled properly at about 11 months. Didn't walk until about 14 months. I think I just got it into my head that 2nd children do everything earlier Hmm. Clearly not!

Crawling is no longer considered a developmental milestone as so many babies dont do it. Some bottom shuffle, some go straight to walking. Many babies don't like being on their fronts for many reasons (reflux etc). My youngest didn't crawl (or move at all) till 14 months. She crawled for a few days then went straight to walking. Now at two she is the strongest, fastest, climbiest baby out of all my 3.

So please don't worry too much. Do call your HV. It was my HV who said they weren't worried till gone 18months/2.

DD (16 months) crawled at 13 months and is only just pulling up and cruising. At 9 months she could barely sit up unsupported. As others have said, it is worth getting your child checked out to put your mind at rest, but he sounds totally normal.

TheYoniOfYawn · 14/04/2013 23:10

DD was a podgy baby who crawled a week before her first birthday, pulled herself to standing at 14 months and walked at 15 months. By 18 months she had caught up with children who walked early. She is not the mist physically confident of children, but got the highest marks in her class in her last ballet exam, so us obviously doing just fine.

My DS is 9 months and exactly the same - not crawling, only sitting for a bit before falling and not sleeping in the evenings and then co sleeping/feeding to sleep! It's hard not to compare with others who are crawling etc but it does seem completely normal and I'm sure they will get there eventually. He's big too so maybe that's something to do with it. A happy little thing though particularly when fed to sleep around 5 times a night. grrrrrr

Thanks again for the replies. I'm going to try to take him to the baby clinic this aft to see the HV. Freelancegirl, he sounds VERY similar to yours in sleep (or lack of Angry) He was 9lb 2 when born and is wearing clothes aged at 1yr +. I wonder whether being big and heavy has anything to do with it and nothing to do with being a little prince who'd much prefer to be carried around than have to exert himself

Let me know what they say lucy. I am pretty sure they will say he is healthy and this is normal. Like I said I am not stressing about the not crawling yet - only a couple of my fellow NCT babies of the same age are doing it, more are not. My DS is wearing 1yr clothes too and especially chunky now he is eating lots but still not burning it off. The sleep on the other hand is a different matter!

lucylookout · 17/04/2013 22:27

We didn't make it freelance, he fell asleep at an inopportune time and we didn't have a chance to get to the clinic before picking ds1 up from school. Will let you know how we get on next week instead!

Ha! I've been meaning to get DS weighed and see the HV visitor for a couple of months now and it keeps interfering with nap times! With a non sleeper these become so important don't they!

elQuintoConyo · 17/04/2013 23:25

Some babies skip crawling altogether, especially if they don't have 'tummy time' screaming time I wouldn't be too worried, but yes, see your hv if you are concerned.
DS is 16mo and so many at this age have a decent amount of words but he doesn't, so far we're not sweating it. There will always be concerns about our dc Smile

lucylookout · 18/04/2013 19:06

That's it Freelance! He fell asleep in the buggy while out shopping, so in theory I could have walked to the clinic and waited for him to wake up there. But instead I parked him in the living room and enjoyed 30mins gardening in the sunshine.

Thanks elquintoconyo, they do all develop at different rates don't they, but al seem to get there in the end Smile

DS was pretty early at rolling and sitting up and we had to then put up with comments about how he'd be crawling soon.

Well he finally decided to start crawling at 10m with no indication or warning. I found out when I walked into the livingroom and saw he'd pulled the fireplace off the wall...
