Mumsnet behaviour-is it a police state?

Hello, I've been lurking on Mumsnet for some time now but finally decided to post having been horrified at the reception that some people have received.

I always assumed that, within reason, mumsnet would be a place for parents/carers to come and, mostly anonymously, discuss their concerns. Over the last few weeks I have seen some ghastly behaviour from mns against innocent posts.
Are some of you out there assuming the mantle of "mumsnet police" and if so should you not announce that fact?

Why are people so aggressive? I've researched some of the more aggressive posters and it seems that there is a pattern to their behaviour.
If you disagree with a post or challenge its viewpoint perhaps you should just make it known and move on-berating people for their view or concern seems wrong to me.

There are lovely people on mumsnet and its such a shame that there are others who seem to get too busy and bully people into submission when they don't agree with them Sad

Oh no, Harpsi, now I'll have to add you to my list of people to avoid Sad. And you were my ally in the eggy-smell crockery clique!

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:27

Talktalk, you've 'kept an eye' on posters and the accuse them of being 'police'?

Sorry to come across as arsey, but that sounds kind of weird.

Harpsichordcarrier · 04/05/2006 14:28

I am chuckling at the idea of mumsnet being a police state though
I mean I spent a little time in a police state and it wasn't much like this tbh
not much discussion of handbags and make up for a start

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:28

American Angle. Judge Flounce. Lavenderrrr.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:29

I hear ya, HC. I'm from a place that's becoming a police state and I know what you mean.

Caligula · 04/05/2006 14:29

AA was a larf, people were terribly patient with her to begin with

And JF and Lav were around for months before they were hounded out with pitchforks

Harpsichordcarrier · 04/05/2006 14:30

talktalk is it me??

now come come dinosaure everyone knows all lawyers like a good ruck Grin

talktalk · 04/05/2006 14:30

I don't think I'm being weird-are you telling me that you don't notice the same posters time and time again?
And lets be honest-we could spend a long time picking holes in everything I say but I suppose you're just helping me make my point really.

It CAN take some getting used to. I remember when I first started, posting something on a thread about breastfeeding (before I knew better), and getting absolutely pounced on by one MNetter. It did feel a bit vicious! But I too am "up for the argy-bargy".

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:31

They were funny, though, Caligula.

:o

Tinker · 04/05/2006 14:31

Vaunda

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:32

'I don't think I'm being weird-are you telling me that you don't notice the same posters time and time again?'

No, actually, I haven't, TT. I come on here for a larf, not to keep score or watch people.

I couldn't care less.

Tinker · 04/05/2006 14:32

She was a pouncee not a pouncer

Greensleeves · 04/05/2006 14:32

it can't be you, HC, you are always so genteel Grin

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:33

I missed the whole Vaunda thing! What was that about?

beckybrastraps · 04/05/2006 14:33

God yes, that poor woman. Mind you, I did laugh... Convinced me MN was for me!

zippitippitoes · 04/05/2006 14:33

I do sometimes miss americanangle..

I've only popped out to unsucessfully deliver a parcel have i missed something?

Tinker · 04/05/2006 14:33

You'd need a whole day expat. Think she was one here for a whole weekend solid.

Greensleeves · 04/05/2006 14:34

I missed it too, what happened?

Caligula · 04/05/2006 14:34

So go on talktalk, say who and what you mean.

I love all this "mumsnet has a clique" "some posters are this that and the other" where there are no names. It's baffling and fruitless. I like names, facts, dates. Call me a man.

Greensleeves · 04/05/2006 14:34

lol at "baffling and fruitless" Grin

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 14:34

Well, she does come on here as 'Caligula' and all.

:o

arfy · 04/05/2006 14:35

A-ha!

"And lets be honest-we could spend a long time picking holes in everything I say but I suppose you're just helping me make my point really."

It is a self-fulfilling prophecy - unless we agree with TT we are just bullies and proving the point. So I don't think we can win here.

anyhow I very rarely jump on posters as I am a wuss. Even when I'd like to! So TT, you have managed to change my character. Grin

Tinker · 04/05/2006 14:35

Caligula - you are a man. Me too, I want names dammit.
