Mumsnet behaviour-is it a police state?

talktalk · 04/05/2006 14:18

Hello, I've been lurking on Mumsnet for some time now but finally decided to post having been horrified at the reception that some people have received.

I always assumed that, within reason, mumsnet would be a place for parents/carers to come and, mostly anonymously, discuss their concerns. Over the last few weeks I have seen some ghastly behaviour from mns against innocent posts.
Are some of you out there assuming the mantle of "mumsnet police" and if so should you not announce that fact?

Why are people so aggressive? I've researched some of the more aggressive posters and it seems that there is a pattern to their behaviour.
If you disagree with a post or challenge its viewpoint perhaps you should just make it known and move on-berating people for their view or concern seems wrong to me.

There are lovely people on mumsnet and its such a shame that there are others who seem to get too busy and bully people into submission when they don't agree with them Sad

Oh, what! I got to 3pm on Thursday, got bored, skimmed to the top of the thread to see whether it was more of the same and now I have to read the rest of it to see where all this kicking off happened...

cataloguequeen · 07/05/2006 00:37

seems to be p*ssing you off quite a bit Expat why are you still here?? (not that I mean thatGrin, it just seems an immature why to deal with a disagreement)

People say and do things that other people may find unacceptable and you get called on it.... deal this person named names deal with it...

No you didn't say leave outright and no you didn't say you owned the site but it seems audacious to ask "why are you still here" would you leave just because you didn't get on with a few people??

Tortington · 07/05/2006 01:34

"I have the distinct feeling there are some middle class mummies on here who think they are smarter than they are who get their only validation from being pious and exclusive on this site, and who couldn't be risque and interesting if they tried. "

how fking dare you.............call me me middle class.

that in itself needs reporting

i'm only up to 11.17pm.

suzywong · 07/05/2006 01:36

what's wrong with being middle class custy?

cataloguequeen · 07/05/2006 01:41

lol custy...Grin

Tortington · 07/05/2006 01:48

up to 12.23 Grin

" don't agree that TaiTai seemed determined to go through the argument all again. she simply mentioned the policy. OK, maybe it would have been more concillatory if she didn't, but she didn't have a go at rhubarb again and she had a point, don't you think? That if on this site we use there is a policy of giving people the benefit of the doubt, why are some people calling others trolls instead of keeping schtum but quietly reporting if they're worried? and you weren't a BIT offhand... "

okay

firstly theres the irony of the namechanger making personal, nay...very personal remarks. backing up a poster who was quoting mn policy.

any road up....she didn't mention rhubarbs name, but it was the only ding dong that was going on ( that i remember reading anyway) so again. not a great leap of faith. a childish dig after the shaking of hands i thought.

i also resent the implication that i am part of a clique. and one which is in existance simply becuase errr. we've been here longer.

if you are new i would suggest paranoia on your part.

there are cliques on MN no doubt. however should you care to check you will find i favour no-one and in certain quarters am frankly hated.
.....that would make you -by default- a member of the latter clique Grin

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:02

I think to be fair to expat, it was a remark made after 2 rather long vitriolic personal posts complaining not only about certain posters, but also about the general welcoming , newbie hating thing MN has going on.

i rather see it as - if you don't like asda, shop at sainsburies. which is what i think she was trying to say.

which In my own very personal opinion is quite different from someone saying - dont post on this site or the classic which is used ( not yet here however)"if you don't like it dont read it.

which is in itself saying, if you dont agree with me - post elsewhere and is precluding opposing oppinion.

so in summation m'lud. i think after Bovvernamechanger had made 2 posts complaining in not only personal but general terms about MN that to ask why she still "shops" here was fair comment.

whcih by the way she answered.

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:09

i fogot to say that - becuase people agree with each other - does not make them a clique. thats rather unfair.

so 3 people agreed with each other?

Saint George forgive me - but i dont even know if we run in the same thread circles?

expat and i cross each other from time to time

greensleves was kind to me on another thread - but apart from that ( sorry greensleves) i have no idea if its been 5 years or 12 months shes been here.

we happen to have the same POV, this differs from yours and so its convenient to say we're in it together?

rather weak argument

heres one for you

Rhubarb is my best friend. i wont see her unduly ridiculed for something un deserved.

however i may leave a deserved one. - i dont have her back just for the sake of it.

but that last comment withstanding - if you want to accuse me of anything - use that.

i got rhubys back. i thought she was right. shes my real life friend. and talk talk, tai tai bovverhovver are in a clique - cos they agree with each other.

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:17

suzy wong - the middle classes thing that musicles are not "real" theatre & make milk from nuts.

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:25

oh and give their kids 2 licks of an ice cream after feeding them only organic doncha know, and post asking if their kid has been food poisened.

the middle classes eat organic.

and are pinky lefty liberal types ( usually)

and they listen to classical music

and think 50 Cent is pronounced "fifty cent" if they know who that is.

and they eat organic

and make soup from pulses

and soap from breastmilk

and cook using nigella or jamie scooter

have a better education, therefore have better paid jobs - move on up the career ladder on people they know at the golf course, and pay nothing out on anything because theres a fucking tax loop none of us grunts know about.

they eat organcis and play golf.

and spot trains
and watch star trek

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:26

bigbaubleeyes · 07/05/2006 03:04

Ahaaaaaaaa TALK TALK - this is a v long thread - i felt that - this is the first time I have posted on MN for months. I left my PN thread cos I felt they were 'clicky' and other threads cos I just felt unless i was on here every f**n hour I couldnt keep up ( i've done a lot of lurkin) and also i find some v snobby. It has saddend me as when i was preg i had some excellent advice on here which literally saved my emotional wellbeing at the time when DH cudn't understand and had invaluable advice for the birth etc.

Pollyanna · 07/05/2006 03:22

how is 50 cent pronounced?

bigbaubleeyes · 07/05/2006 03:31

PA R U $ real you silly tart???? Shock

expatinscotland · 07/05/2006 08:32

it's pronounced 'fitty cent' (although in Texas you may or may not hear the 't' in cent depending on where you are). it's an African-American thing, like 'axe' for 'ask'. or, as the old tshirt slogan goes, 'it's a black thing, and you wouldn't understand.'

i made soup from pulses when i lived in Muirhouse, one of the most deprived estates in town, b/c it was cheap.

cod · 07/05/2006 08:38

lol @ custy beign all chippy

Pollyanna · 07/05/2006 09:05

Pollyanna · 07/05/2006 09:05

tigermoth · 07/05/2006 09:09

I love the way this thread is in the behaviour/development topic - as if we are all children. Which we're not, of course :)
