My 2 year old dd is starting to recognise that boys have 'willies' and girls don't. What do I tell her girls have? 'Fanny' I don't like, and other than that. I haven't got any ideas. Anyone any suggestions?

nomenclature

anniebear · 24/04/2006 17:01

sorry, was just using the play ground as an example....... not a good one

Ok, if my DD said at a friends house that she had a sore vulva, or anus, The mum and all the others that I know would look suprised that she had called it that!!

Again, I'm not saying its wrong to use that word, it just sounds strnage to use it

Harpsichordcarrier · 24/04/2006 18:53

you may well be right, that it sounds strange to others.
to me it doesn't sound odd at all, of course.
that's my point really, why should it sound strange to call it by it's proper name?

anniebear · 24/04/2006 22:00

I suppose if thats what you have always called it, it won't sound strange to you

But then to others who don't refer to the correct names , it does sound a bit strange!!

Thats just the way it is!!!!

If everyone was to be honest, I am sure if they heard a young child say Vulva they would be suprised!!

I missed some of this as have had a huge stomach upset - lots of faeces coming out of my anus to use the correct terminology.

I think people have misinterpreted my post - I didn't mean that all these things were hidden from me until I was 12 or that they should be. My family were quite open and used to walk around naked a lot, talk about bums, willies, bosoms (just not vaginas).

When I was young none of the girls in my class started their periods until they were 12 or 13, by which time, one way or another, we all knew what was going on!

Obviously I don't want to "hide" these things from my dd & I agree that particularly as girls are having puberty younger these days they need to know earlier than I did.

I was mainly responding to the original poster who said her dd was age 2. My dd is also 2 and as she doesn't even know when she's doing a wee yet I don't think she needs to know anything more about her anatomy than the fact that she's got a bottom.

Given her hit and miss grasp of language at the moment if I told her she had a vagina she'd probably call it a donkey the next time I asked & even then I doubt that she know what it was short of me actually poking it for her.

I agree with the poster who said that that certainly up to age 5 kids are more concerned about the urinary uses of their penises etc.

I think that the exact anatomical details of reproduction can be saved at least until this age and probably older.

Our family word (which I won't repeat here because it would instantly rob me of any anonymity Grin) is the same for both boys' bits and girls' bits, though we use 'testicles' for, well, for testicles. When ds started school he soon realised that other people used other words, and is perfectly at home with both vocabularies.

When ds at 2 commented that dd and I didn't have a , I told him that we did, that girls' s are on the inside. Which led on to a discussion of where our testicles were, and what we had instead (ovaries, of course). Ds was very serious and interested, and I just about managed to keep a straight face!

Candide, there have always been girls who start having periods young - my mum for instance was 10yo, and that was 1951.

out of interest, before this vagina revelation when you were 12 how did you think babies were born? Shock

Candide · 25/04/2006 17:55

Vaginas aren't necessary for gooseberry bush deliveries Wink.
