Toilet training

My 2.5 yr old DS shows no interest on tt. He goes to nursery where many of his friends use the toilet but he won't. I have casually tried to get him to sit on a potty and also a toilet with a trainer seat but he hates it. He seems worried about exposing his bum and sitting down!

He never tells me when he has pooed and seems quite happy in nappies. I have tried to be relaxed about it all but time is moving on and when he is 3 he moves to the preschool room where he must be out of nappies.

A friend suggested I spend the weekend with him out of nappies so he will begin to learn when he wet. However I can jsut see he will wee all over the house and I can't afford new carpets!

Any ideas? Shall I try pull ups? He did wear one once and when he weed he came straight to me to tell me so it might be a way for him to learn when he is wet.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Think it is unfair of nursery to insist that he will be out of nappies by 3, but please don't worry too much, 6 months is a long time.

I'd try to relax about it for a bit. Potty training is so much easier when the weather warms up and they are wearing less clothing, our DS spent a week in the garden wearing just a sun hat with a potty nearby and it meant no mess in the house.

Have a read of this and this.

We used this book and found it very good, I've recommended it to friends who've liked it too.

Give both yourself and DS a break for a couple of weeks, relax and then start again. Don't worry about his friends at nursery being out of nappies either, just like weaning, walking and talking its not a race and they won't be asking him in his job interviews how old he was when he came out of nappies Smile

Agree with Jilted - none of those are drivers for potty training.

Presumably he'll start in the preschool room in September. If you wait till he's ready then it only takes a few days and starting too early can really cause problems, so I would definitely hang on. Try it in the summer when it's warmer and going trouserless/nappy-free will be easier and you've still got a couple of months before preschool.

Agree with others that we have a whole summer between now and September when he can wear less clothing and it will be much easier to potty train. If he hates the potty and toilet at the moment, I would leave it completely for a couple of months - there really is no point in him getting stressed for no reason while we are in the middle of winter.

Thankyou so much for your replies. I feel more confident in waiting a bit now. Will certainly look at that book too.

Thanks ladies.
