talking at 18months?

just wondering what your 18 month olds are saying? what kind of stage of speech development they are at?

It varies wildly. DD was talking in complete sentences at 18 months where as ds only had about 20 words. I believe that children of that age are expected to have 6 words, but understand a lot more.

Are you worried about your child?

a bit like reallytired, dd1 was talking in complete sentences, while dd2 had yet to utter an intelligible word
neither was considered particularly unusual

DS had about 25 words at 18 months, DD had about 50, and was starting to put together 2 word sentences.

DS used lots of signs too, which DD hasn't bothered with as much (probably as she's a neglected second born so I didn't teach her many).

Huge variance between my DDs too, 1 hugely "advanced" 1 had severe speech delay, other 2 were in the middle.

DS is 22 months and said 'hello car' this morning. He knows lots of words by rarely puts them together. At 18 months he had lots of words but not always clear ones.

DD2 is 16 months and uses mostly single words with the occasional set phrase ('bye daddy', or 'row-row-row' (for row the boat song). But mainly 'No', 'nose' and 'dat' (for milk)! I can't for the life of me remember where the other two were at that age.

Watching this with interest. My DS is 19 months and is only just starting to come out with intelligible words (and even then only to us!). He understands everything, though, and uses signs a lot too... I worry that he has a bit of a speech delay, especially as he doesn't say mummy.

DS is a second child and not talking quite as much as DD was at 18 months. His vocab has come on massively from about 10 words at 16 months to - maybe 100? - at 18 months. He can say two word sentences.

Yep official line is 6 words by 18 months.

My dc3 was barely saying anything at 18m, he was referred to SALT he is getting better but is still probably a year behind in speech

kurlyvoice dont worry about him not saying Mummy. One of my DT's didnt say it till he was 20-21 months. He said other peoples names - even the cats [hsad] Now all I hear is "Mummmy - Hello Mummy" a million times a day.

At 18 months DS could only say "no", "more" and "mine". We suddenly had an explosion of words about two months later - we went almost overnight from six to too many to count - and at 2.2 we've now got whole sentences (though definitely not grammatically correct ones!).

Oh, and it took him ages to say Mummy - we got Daddy much faster.

My ds could only say "hello" at 18 months (rather bizarrely his first word). He didn't say Mummy for ages and I was terribly hurt, especially when he started saying "Gruffalo" before Mummy.

He is now 6 and talks constantly. He follows me round the house going "Muuuuum.... Muuuuum.... Muuuuuum".

DD is 18 mo and can say about 8-10 words like mum, dad, yes, no, hello etc but no sentences. She does understand pretty much everything we say to her tho. A friends DS at 18mo could say lots of words, put sentences together, count to 10 and count backwards from 10 as well. All children are different.

DS has around 200 words over both languages and makes sentences in English 'me do dat button' 'me more honey' etc but he has 2 parents who talk a lot...

His little friend the same age has 2 words.

Neither are abnormal.

DS 16 months has about 30-40 words I would say, says some two word sentences his favourite is 'I'm looking' meaning I want. He's been saying a sentences for a few months now. His cousin at the same age has about 10 words. But they all develop at different stages so I know she'll soon catch up.

I agree, it is extremely variable.

My DS had 10-20 words.
My DD was talking in extremely complicated sentences

Turns out my DS has autism... but unless you have other worries, I would say speech at 18 months is not something to lose sleep over.

Dd1 didn't talk at all at 18months, despite me putting in the graft flash carding the hell out of her. At 4, she talks constantly...

Dd2 17 months, who's had zero effort put into her development, sings nursery rhymes, and also talks constantly. I'm not sure how many words she knows (feels like hundreds), but shes starting putting 3 words together 'go for walk' etc.

I think it all depends on the child, dd1 should have reciting Shakespeare the effort I put in. Some are quicker or slower than others, I'm not sure it hands down reflects on future intelligence.

About 30 intelligible words at the moment 17mo; hiya, bye bye, Mummy, Daddy, Grandad, twinkle, poo poo, doe-doe, wee wee, doggy, birdie, teeth, drink, boobie, bed, blanket, keys, peppa pig, various names, yog-yog (yoghurt), mine, car, dolly.

Starting to say two words together - my Daddy, my dolly etc.. Seems in line with other children at nursery.

Like everyone before we could have proper 5-6 word sentence conversations with DD at 18 months.

DS is 20 months and until about 2-3 weeks ago didn't have anything like that ability. He could understand lots of words but only said a handful.

Now we seem to be having a word explosion. I don't think it's coincidence that his attention span has also improved and he can sit down with me and listen to a whole book now. DD was able to do this practically as soon as she sat up! :)

My DD is 18mo next week. She says: Mama, Dada, Lala (herself), Nana, No, shoes, juice, bye, one, two, three, papa (paper), there, yummy... think that's about it.

DD 16 months and I would say has about 100 words but some only defined by context as they sound too similar ( eye, ear and hair for example all come out as "air"), and is starting to combine 2 words ("a book", "hot tea", "ball blue").

Her little friend has only a few words however but is more physically developed - it depends what they concentrate on first - DD has only just learnt how to climb onto the sofa!

19mo DS has 100+ words & has been putting 2, very occasionally 3 word sentences together for a couple of months now. Every day has a running commentary OMG!
Dh & I WFH plus live with MiL & have my folks not far away so the poor kid has probably been talked to death!! Don't know whether it has some relevance but his group of friends are all 5 or so months older than him, though not all are talking as much as him, so perhaps he's being encouraged along?
Will be interested to see whether due very soon ds2 is as far along at the same age - 2nd child and all??

Don't want to hijack the thread - but my DD is 14mo and only says Cheese (Cheeeez) and Hello (ello!). One of her friends makes all of the animal noises and says about 8 words really clearly. I am a bit worried tbh as it is just her and I (recently started nursery 2 days a week for some variation) and although we see other children I can't help but wonder if I don't talk enough because we are just alone in the mornings/evenings... Anyone help or put my mind to rest? I try to go through every little thing we do, up/down stairs, nappy change, boots on, going into new rooms, what shall we do etc etc.

My dd said at least 100 words. My DS said nothing until 2 years. He is academically gifted and she is not. I think 18 months is too soon to worry.
