DD2 is very nearly 2. For the last few weeks she has wailed for several hours a day. The rest of the time she is absolutely fine, plays nicely etc. But when she wails she really screams, on and on, never ending.
She has been poorly recently but she was screaming like this long before she was ill. She wants me to just hold her all the time, that is often the only way to stop her screaming. But then at other times she continues with the screaming while sitting on my knee or being held.
I have no let up from her. This afternoon it was non-stop from when I picked her up from the childminder's until about 30 minutes ago. Wailing. Shrieking. Moaning.
I am reaching the end of my tether. I can do nothing lately. I have been really ill this last week so as you can imagine, having a toddler who is so demanding has worn me down even more. I don't know what to do with her. So often nothing I do will placate her. It is not just me as I have a friend visiting at the moment and she is bewildered by it too.
Please help me!

Yorkiegirl just wanted to add my support.
No great ideas tho I would think Miaou’s technique plus possible allergy investigation might work.
What a nightmare for you. Am really feeling for you and just wanted you to know that.

Yorkiegirl, I know life with a toddler is hard but 4 hours of straight screaming does not sounds right. It is more than attention seeking because it is really tiring to cry for so long. I am inclined to think the cause is medical. Allergies or pain is a good place to start. Hope you crack it soon.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/03/2006 17:42

Good stuff YG - i hope they get somewhere with it for you.

Miaou · 22/03/2006 17:47

Oh, I'm really pleased that the GP is taking this seriously YG - best of luck and keep us updated on progress Smile

Yorkiegirl · 22/03/2006 18:38

DD2 had a good day today. She has had a couple of stretches of screaming but not like yesterday. Who knows what tomorrow will be like.

tht's good news YG.. have ytou made any changes to diet at all yet?
just wanted to say... if you're worried about wheat allergy, then gluten is another thing to consider (iyswim?)
oats and barley also have gluten in, so that would rule them out too.

but rice krispies are fine.... anything rice based

Yorkiegirl · 22/03/2006 20:35

haven't changed anything yet.
This evening we were sat together on the sofa and she was pulling funny faces at me to make me laugh.
That's what's so bizarre about all this. She can be so gorgeous one minute and hideous the next.

starlover · 22/03/2006 20:42

i was thinking about this earlier as well.. and them ore i think about it the more it screams something wrong with her (not behavioural)

i mean, if it was attention seeking then she'd stop once she got the attention... wouldn't she?
the fact that she still screams even if you're holding her just seems odd

hunkermunker · 22/03/2006 20:49

YG, could she have a grumbling appendix or something like that?

Really feel for you - DS1 (who is the same age, as you know!) can scream loudly sometimes, but I know what triggers it (usually biscuit-related...!) - really, really hope you get an answer soon.

Yorkiegirl · 22/03/2006 20:51

will sort out the appointment in the morning. It was so weird. Today was great. If every day had been like that I would not be as worried as I am now.
A grumbling appendix? Would she not be really ill if that was the case? Or would it just give her bad belly ache?

Hulababy · 22/03/2006 20:52

I am glad you had a good day today YG. So sorry to hear you are going through this. I hope the GPs appointment will prove useful and maybe draw something out for you to go on.

shrub · 22/03/2006 21:04

haven't read all the thread but my ds1 had stomach pains on and off for a few weeks. had a complete personality change aswell, would be crying out in agony wailing, very withdrawn, but then be fine and bouncing on the chair an hour later. we didn't know what to make of it and in the end went to a and e in the middle of the night as thought appendicitis. it turned out to be mesenteric andonitus (sp?) which is a virus that i understand affects the glands in the stomach around the tummy button. it lasted nearly 4 weeks.

shrub · 22/03/2006 21:15

found right spelling
mesenteric andenitis.could try google to see if some of the symptoms match?

hewlettsdaughter · 23/03/2006 08:40

YG, I don't know what to advise, but just wanted to say you're doing all the right things - getting in touch with the GP and so on. DD screams but not like this. I hope you find the cause soon - or dd2 gets better!

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 14:39

she got up at 3 am this morning and screamed on the landing for half an hour. Nothing to calm her. She got into bed with us in the end and continued to scream for another 15 minutes at least.

hewlettsdaughter · 23/03/2006 14:40

:(

hewlettsdaughter · 23/03/2006 14:45

some people have suggested it could be her molars coming through - is that a possibility do you think?

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 14:48

it is but they seem to be taking over 6 weeks now!

OP posts:
Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 14:48

plus if it was that then paracetamol would help wouldn't it? And it hasn't

OP posts:
Bozza · 23/03/2006 15:18

yg I am not convinced it is the molars but DD's have been coming through since December so the time span is perfectly feasible. She now has 1.75, so 2.25 to go.

jumpingjackflash · 23/03/2006 17:27

diD THE gp do all the usual checks of throat and ears? My Ds used to scream with ear pain BUT nurofen did calm him down. Have you tried Nurofen for kids rather than Calpol? Sorry if this is basic as I expect you have TRIED everything? Screaming in the middle of the night isn't attention seeking once in bed with you. Something medical sounds the fault but what? Hang in there. You must get so tired with it all. Can YOU get a break from it too? Otherwise its very wearing.

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 23:17

fingers crossed we get a good night tonight please. This afternoon was ok. A couple of minor moments but generally ok.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/03/2006 00:02

Oh YG - you poor thing. IT must be distressing for DD too. Try nurofen. My HV and paed recommended dosing every 3 hours in a really bad patch Nurofen then 3 hours later Calpol then 3 hours later Nurofen again.

Maybe its worth a try on a bad day?

mumball · 24/03/2006 01:07

Hi Yorkiegirl, I know you'd probably tried everything, but I was just wondering my DS gets very badly constipated, which causes him to cry alot. Does she poo everyday - if she is only pooing small amounts, it could be that she is constipated and especially if its runny, as that usually meaning a blockage (not serious) and she has overflow. But if you think her pooing is okay then I am sorry I haven't been much help. Its just something else to think about. When DS is v constipated his stomach has a hard lump to it near to his belly button. There's lots of medication the GP can prescribe. Hope this is helpful!

hewlettsdaughter · 24/03/2006 19:43

How was last night and today, YG?
