DD2 is very nearly 2. For the last few weeks she has wailed for several hours a day. The rest of the time she is absolutely fine, plays nicely etc. But when she wails she really screams, on and on, never ending.
She has been poorly recently but she was screaming like this long before she was ill. She wants me to just hold her all the time, that is often the only way to stop her screaming. But then at other times she continues with the screaming while sitting on my knee or being held.
I have no let up from her. This afternoon it was non-stop from when I picked her up from the childminder's until about 30 minutes ago. Wailing. Shrieking. Moaning.
I am reaching the end of my tether. I can do nothing lately. I have been really ill this last week so as you can imagine, having a toddler who is so demanding has worn me down even more. I don't know what to do with her. So often nothing I do will placate her. It is not just me as I have a friend visiting at the moment and she is bewildered by it too.
Please help me!

It must be really overwhelming YG, I really do feel for you Sad.

OK - possible approaches to consider:

  1. Go back to GP to discuss possible allergies and approaches to dealing with them
  1. Behavioural techniques - ignore/praise
  1. Eliminating possible triggers from the diet (though maybe that should be monitored by doctor)
VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/03/2006 23:05

With milk?

Yorkiegirl · 21/03/2006 23:05

I am seeing the GP tomorrow so I will have a chat with her about what to do next.

possible it's a wheat/dairy thing then?

Yorkiegirl · 21/03/2006 23:06

yes, weetabix with milk

Good. I think its worth having her checked over for all the things listed already. It is possible to check food allergies via a blood test. My DD has had this done.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/03/2006 23:09

In the meantime it might be worth buying soya milk - its not unpleasant - for the next week and changing her breakfast to something else. See how that goes whilst you are waiting.

Yorkiegirl · 21/03/2006 23:17

I'll get some soya milk tomorrow. Which brand is best?
And which cereal should I try with her?

We used So Good the other week when we ran out of wysoy formula milk. It was actually quite pleasant (and i loathe the wysoy stuff).

Cereal/breakfast - i dont know. Something gluten/wheat free would be a plus though. I dont know anything about wheat or gluten so i cant help there.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/03/2006 23:21

Did a quick google and found \link{http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/sect/FBC.html\this} - its got some familiar brand names on it..

Yorkiegirl · 21/03/2006 23:22

hmm porridge she likes porridge. Could try that with soya milk

Oh sh*t - SUGAR! Maybe its hypo/hyper glycaemia? Not as serious as diabetes but sugar issues cause behaviour problems.

Yorkiegirl · 21/03/2006 23:23

that's a very good point. Eeek.

nulnulcat · 21/03/2006 23:55

ps the bottle of wine every evening im finding really does help :o

meggmoo · 22/03/2006 08:30

Just wanted to recommend So Good milk (soya) has a nice flavour. Even better is rice milk you can buy alost anywhere now. It has a lovely nutty flavour.

tracyk · 22/03/2006 09:42

YG - ds does this when getting picked up from nursery too - but it is pure tiredness that makes him do it. I have to get him from car, undressed, into bag and cot - all being hit by a whailing child - absolutley breaking his heart. After his sleep he is fine again.
But last night he woke at 9.45pm really sobbing and calling for mummy and daddy. Took him about 45 mins to calm down and go back to sleep in our bed. He NEVER wakes in the night, NEVER refuses milk on offer (and he didn't want it last night) and usually won't refuse medicine if offered either. So I don't know what was wrong with him.
Maybe they are all going through the same kind of thing. Lets hope its a phase!

Dottydot · 22/03/2006 09:59

Hi YG - sorry, only just seen this and haven't really got much advice...

Does she still have an afternoon nap? Ds2 isn't a screamer, but the only time he did recently was when the day was a bit of a jumble and he ended up not having a nap - he was impossible for the last 3 hours of the day - compltely clingy and crying and screaming. Maybe she's tired?

Kerry74 · 22/03/2006 10:11

My nephew was very similar really blissfully happy at times then would snap and scream the house down in pain my sister new something was wrong, he was the same as your bub on a very good diet no additives etc but the GP and the Baby nurse's all kept saying there was nothing wrong and he was just a fussy whingeing baby, she finally got an appointment with a paediatrician and it turned out that he had a major problem and couldn't poo.. his intestines were completely blocked with poo and he had to have enema's every day and finally surgery to loosen the muscles in his bottom... So if you really feel there is something wrong and it is not attention seeking you are her mum and you know best so keep trying with the GP till they do something about it.. Smile

Yorkiegirl · 22/03/2006 10:16

I have been to the GP this morning and she agrees that we need to look into this. I need to make an appointment to see her next week. She is also arranging for the right HV to contact me, she knows there is a problem as to who is assigned to the children at our surgery atm.
So hopefully things will improve very soon.
