When will my 8month old baby walk?

My DS is very early. He was crawling at 6 months and standing up at 61/2, holding on to sth. Sometimes when he's standing up and I'm supporting him for balance, I can let him go and he will stand unsupported for quite a few seconds. Now I've noticed he tries to go from the sofa to the table etc. He 8months and a week old.

this phase can last for some time, but he may be earlier than most.

oh no, I won't encourage him! He's my number 3, so the more immobile the better! I'm just a bit worried that indeed he might start walking soon, too soon for my comfort! I can't believe he'll wait till 16 months, he's far too eager, unfortunately

my dts have been crawling for four months so far and still look a way off walking. You might still have a wait yet!

My 13 mth dd started walking 2 days ago. Crawling by 8 mths and pulling herself up on her feet by 9mths. My friends dd started walking at 10 mths. All babies are different. x

Twiglett · 28/02/2006 09:34

when he's ready

DS walked at 10 months

DD not till 16 months

I wouldn't push it if I were you .. don't encourage it .. it makes life more difficult

Twiglett · 28/02/2006 09:34

Like your name huge!

Thanks for posting; I was wondering this too.

my ds2 was walking at 9 months (ds1 walked at 14 months). it was a nightmare at the beginning... he was v v mobile but with not the smallest bit of common sense / fear. he had far too many bumps on the head for a while.

leogaela · 28/02/2006 09:44

my ds started pulling himself up to standing and cruising at 6 1/2 to 7 months. Took his first steps completely unsupported at 10 months and now is walking really well at 12 months! Its a lot of fun seeing him walk, but yes, also hard work!
Depends on the child I think, ds always tries to do things before he is ready to do them and has had a lot of falls, other children are more cautious and won't step out on their own ntil they are really ready and know they won't fall.

NatalieJane · 28/02/2006 09:45

My DS never crawled he did that army shuffle thing on his belly from about 6 months, he stood up unaided at about 8 months, but didn't even try to take a step until he was 14 months...

Piffle · 28/02/2006 09:50

Sounds very similar to my ds who walked at 8 mths, he was very early at the physical motor stuff too
Was a bloody nightmare in reality, he had no idea about doors, stairs, windows, danger, he thought he was immortal and would teeter at the tops of stairwells thinking he could scale it all...
I come out in a sweat recalling it....
dd walked at 26 mths
Far easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like your ds is going to be on his way very shortly.
Good luck :)

Piffle · 28/02/2006 09:50

Sorry ds walked at 9 mths not 8....

biglips · 28/02/2006 10:13

mine start crawling & sitting up at 8mths (same day!) and cruising at 9 mths and walked at 12 mths

OLIVEBRANCH · 28/02/2006 13:16

My daughter didn't walk until 18 mths and my son didn't walk until 15 mths. It really depends on the child there all different.

colditz · 28/02/2006 13:21

My ds was like this, very early to do anything, I have a picture of him standing, golding on, at just turned 6 months old.

He didn't walk until 14 months!

eidsvold · 01/03/2006 09:25

dd2 has been doing that for months and it seems she can't be bothered to let go and walk... or even use a pushers thingy to help... she prefers to crawl. She is 15 months old.

Babyblue2 · 01/03/2006 12:59

DD2 crawled at 5 months, stood at 6 months, cruised at 7, stood unsupported at 8 months, took an odd step on her own at 9 months and walked properly at 10 months whereas DD1 crawled at 10 months, and was walking properly at 11 months.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 01/03/2006 13:04

Ds sat up at 6m, bum shuffled until he was 10m, crawled at 10m, started cruising at 12m, he is now 13.5m and is standing alone for a few seconds and trying to walk with his push along walker.
I remember worrying when he would 'crawl properly' as he bum shuffled everywhere, when one day he just crawled in front of me! Hoping the walking will be the same!

Nemo1977 · 01/03/2006 13:07

Completely depends.
DS sat up at 4mths, crawling at 5mths,standing up at 6.5mths and walking at 8.5mths.

PiccadillyCircus · 01/03/2006 13:07

DS was crawling at 8.5 months, cruising at 9 months.....and then walking at 15 months. I think he liked crawling so much he didn't see the point in walking any sooner.

Pfer · 01/03/2006 13:31

Hairy - both of my DS's walked before their 10th month. However, my niece was 13months and my neighbours 2 DS's were both around the 20 months age.
Like Feistybird said, this phase can last for sometime. Make the most of the lack of mobility as when they start they just don't stop and you'll really know about it!

lanismum · 01/03/2006 14:11

my dd was crawling at about 6 1/2 months, and pulling herself up at about 8 months, she took her 1st steps at 10 months and now shes walking really well, far too fast, she will be 1 on the 11th march.

ruty · 01/03/2006 15:12

my ds didn't crawl until he was about 10 months old. And he was walking before his first birthday. So it seems pretty random to me.
