What are your best "unofficial' milestones for your baby/toddler?

I am very proud of the fact that my 6 month old can locate and grab his 'bits' within two seconds of me removing his nappy. It may not be in any of the official milestones but I reckon it shows impressive dexterity :o

What are other MN's favorite milestones that may not make it into the baby books but still make us all very proud. x

lol, like this thread - and your DS is ahead with that milestone! My 9 month old has only just discovered his 'bits'....they are currently his favourite bath toy :o

My unofficial milestone has to be that my DS will now happily crawl over to his older sister and take back whatever toy she took away from him. (It is not the crawling that is the milestone, it is the standing up for himself that is!)

Kveta · 10/05/2012 09:51

first flinging himself backwards onto the floor (checking it carefully first though) tantrum was at 9 months. We were so proud :o

StealthToddler · 10/05/2012 10:03

blowing kisses at 13 months..... makes my heart melt....

talkwalktalk · 10/05/2012 10:06

deliberately throwing blanky out of cot and then wailing disconsolately.

can't remember when that was, we thought him very advanced though.

Throughgrittedteeth · 10/05/2012 10:06

My DS (9mo) can now point! Also sometimes he gets a bit excited and it looks and sounds like he's wagging his finger and telling you off! Very funny, so proud!

FrozenNorthPole · 10/05/2012 10:08

First spontaneous removal of own, poo-filled nappy. About 12 months old ...

FrozenNorthPole · 10/05/2012 10:09

(And concommitant daubing of nappy contents around the carpet / walls)

JoEW · 10/05/2012 10:12

Removal of sleeping bag and PJ bottoms and then shouting for help because he was cold. Not till 14 months, so I am unsure how advanced this is but it's impressively daft.

duchesse · 10/05/2012 10:16

First time she worked out how to remove all her clothing and run around naked at 12 mo.

1.6 years later it's slightly less cute.

sayjay · 10/05/2012 10:25

First A and E visit and following on from that first surgery to coincide with first birthday.....a weekend of milestones Grin

JeewizzJen · 10/05/2012 10:30

DS is purposely lifting up my top and blowing rasperries on my horrific post baby belly at 10mo. Silly bugger.

first time the "oh ooh" comes BEFORE the dropped toy/drink/spoon, rather than after. About 10 months.

thefurryone · 10/05/2012 10:32

Rolling off the changing matt (we change him on the floor) and first crawling away, now walking and hiding behind the chair laughing, in an effort to stop me putting on a clean nappy (8 months)

Sixfeetandcounting · 10/05/2012 10:34

Love it :0 I also remember being v v proud when my toddler (who is 2.5 now) managed to trap a fly against the window and then eat it. He was 13 months old and probably learnt it from the cat. I knew I should have been more concerned about him ingesting an insect but was suitably impressed at his speed!

First time they realise that Feet Are Chewable. Looks so wonderful to see her trying to shove both feet into her mouth.

thefurryone · 10/05/2012 10:37

sixfeetandcounting is it really bad that I almost caught myself wishing my DS could do that? Sadly our cat who was responsible for catching flies is no longer with us and I'm definitely missing that skill in the household.

BornSicky · 10/05/2012 10:43

this month my 15 month old learned how to do "Round and Round the Garden" and "this little piggy went to market" on himself and me. He now does it all the time, it's very cute.

Equally cute is his obsession with books. He toddles over to the bookcase and pulls out whatever he wants to read an either brings it to me and climbs into my lap, or proceeds to sit on the floor and "read" it to himself - lots of babbling and pointing at the pictures, as well as turning all the pages... in sort of the right order!

kmdwestyorks · 10/05/2012 11:04

nose picking and how far can i stick this finger up my nose before it bleeds

has recently found her girl bits and cried when she prodded a bit too far (i think girls must be slower than boys on that front).

Best so far ( shes 3.1), last week she pulled the chair to the kitchen counter, climbed up the chair, onto the counter, stood on a cake tin and was caught rummaging through the top cupboards for sweeties. I didn't fecking well know i needed child lock on the top cupboard and i have to stretch to get to the tin myself. Although fair play, she worked hard for that sweetie.

When she and the dog became allies - the exact same time that weaning started Grin

johnworf · 10/05/2012 11:13

Realising they can feed the dog/cat with food flung over the side of the highchair.

ragged · 10/05/2012 11:15

climbing trees at 2.5yo. I'm sure I'm not supposed to take perverse pleasure in that, but I do nonetheless.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 10/05/2012 11:19

Three years two months: put self to bed. Entirely. I wished her goodnight as she climbed the stairs, expecting to hear a cry for help any second, and...an hour later I checked in on her and there she was, pyjama'ed, in bed, fast asleep.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 10/05/2012 11:20

(The pyjamas were on inside out)

NagooIsBuildingAnArk · 10/05/2012 11:22

17 months old and Baby Goo had her first broken banana tantrum.

5YO DS was told by me that if he wants to rub his willy he can go in his room and rub it by himself.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/05/2012 11:30

I can't remember exactly when (8 weeks? 10 weeks? was a long time ago!), but when ds found his hands and laid there transfixed watching them throw crazy shapes, like a cheesey Quaver. I bloody loved that. To me, that was when he showed consciousness for the first time.

The first time he absolutely lost it with giggles; a dog stuck his head in his pushchair and licked his face. Ordinarily I'd have been horrified (I'm know where dogs' faces go, the filthy feckers), but it was an absolute joy.
