What are your best "unofficial' milestones for your baby/toddler?

I am very proud of the fact that my 6 month old can locate and grab his 'bits' within two seconds of me removing his nappy. It may not be in any of the official milestones but I reckon it shows impressive dexterity :o

What are other MN's favorite milestones that may not make it into the baby books but still make us all very proud. x

Learning to make a LOUD pig snort sound at about 20 months.

First faked sore tummy in failed attempt to avoid school.

"Look! See how big I can make my willy!" at about 2.

First good hide and seek hiding place.

First time DS told me something I didn't already know.

OhTinky · 10/05/2012 20:47

The hysterical giggling. Feels like DD has been doing this forever!

Catching her singing to herself for the first time - it was "mumble mumble" then really clearly "e-I-e-I-o"! Today! 16mths

The choosing of shoes to match the outfit 12mths ish

Demanding another banana - I handed it over, I didn't dare say no 14mths

Copying me and learning how to jump at 16mths

DS2, 16mths, rolls his eyes, but they kind of get stuck at the top, so he looks like this Hmm with both eyes up.

MrsBeaver · 10/05/2012 21:19

I turned my back for 30sec to warm up her puree in a microwave and DD dialled 999. 10 mo and her first ASBO-worthy action, how did she do that???

(Emergency services called back to make sure everything was ok and were v. understanding but suggested I put handset out of reach...)

OlivesTree · 10/05/2012 21:21

DD has started doing a fake crying face- she is only 7 months old! Hilarious! The best part is when she stops doing it, checks to make sure I am suitably concerned and then carries on a bit longer.

surprisearrival · 10/05/2012 21:32

Dd says " shakey shakey" whilst shaking her hand when she wants a bottle (since about 9mnth) sticks her tummy out when you ask her where her tummy is.

ToriaPumpkin · 10/05/2012 21:34

Ivana you reminded me, we're weaning atm and having got the hang of purees and then lumps in purees we progressed to giving him bits of whatever we're eating. Including, on Sunday afternoon, hummus Grin His face was priceless Grin

Mavis laughing is wonderful isn't it? My DS has a wicked laugh which I finally succeeded in videoing. He finds the weirdest things funny though. Like licking my ear...

WellHello · 10/05/2012 21:36

Last month dd would clap when asked to :)

Shes has since become bored of that trick but is now beginning to roll all over and crawl a little after weeks and weeks of demanding to be walked everywhere (9 months)

vicksean · 10/05/2012 21:38

My DD at 6 months when sat on me looks over at her dad and says "oooo" (sounding a bit like an owl) over and over until daddy looks at her and then she will give him a big grin when he looks at her. She has also mastered the fake cough to get attention!!
At about 4 months when she was on the floor and I was on settee, I looked at her and when our eyes met she gave me a lovely smile, made my heart melt!!
PLus some of the others that people have already mentioned. The sour strawberry face was so funny we had to give her more just to record it lol

KenDoddsDadsDog · 10/05/2012 21:40

The first time they hurl themselves from the sofa/bed/ your knee and end up on the floor with a "what just happened face"

WellHello · 10/05/2012 21:41

...oh Olivestree my dd does the fake crying face aswell! When I realised what she was doing it made me laugh then she laughed, the little minx

ThisIsMummyPig · 10/05/2012 21:45

I nearly cried with joy when DD2 gave me her first stick (about 13 months). DD1 is 4 and still gives me the odd one.

I was holding 27month DS' hand as we left for nursery, when he stopped, turned around to DP who was waiting by our front door and said, "Bye Dada. Love you!" I think we all melted a bit then.

DS has started singing his own songs, about things he's done during the day, to the tune of a song he likes.

He's been so ill lately with congestion, coughing, diarrhea, you name it, but he looks on the bright side and has been having a good time counting his sneezes today. DS particularly likes it when there are two close together. At dinner he had one of these "double sneezes" and had just finished saying "two sneezes" when he let rip a massive fart and added nonchalantly, "and a fart". Cue me singing, "And a partridge in a pear treeeee".

Firsttimer78 · 10/05/2012 21:58

First (and only...) 'love you mummy' at bedtime!

TheCrackFox · 10/05/2012 22:10

First time they make up a joke.

Ds2 was about 3yrs when I was buying him a comic - I asked him "what's the magic word?" and he drily answered "abracadabra". Cheeky bugger.

First attempt at applying acquired knowledge yesterday - bearing in mind majority of knowledge base for 3YO is from CBEEBIES.

Mum (with dad watching over with stern face): I'm not happy with your behaviour this evening. I'm not happy when you are being mean and don't do what you're told. How are we going to fix this problem?

3YO: Call the Numberjacks?

sharp exit of both parents with tears streaming. A joy that evening to call all the grandparents in stealth boast of 3YO's applied problem solving and delegation prowess!

ElleOhElle · 10/05/2012 23:02

DD (13mths) picked up her dolly, put it over her shoulder and proceeded to pat it on the back.......too cute x

MoaningMinnieRisesAgain · 10/05/2012 23:05

Sometime around 12-18m ish DD started to give herself way when climbing, she would clamber onto the coffee table saying 'Get down! Get down!'

DS at 2 would get the steps and climb towards the worktop in search of sweets. Usually with such a cheeky look on his face that he got to keep them Grin

33goingon64 · 10/05/2012 23:31

DS (14 months) has a very complicit smile including a wry smile when he knows something is funny like one of us farting. The first time he ate 'well' after introducing solids was in th restaurant we'd held our wedding reception and tucked into steak and chips (having sucked on some carrot sticks to date). Yesterday he let go of the safe haven of the sofa and walked confidently towards me. Wow. I had to ring DH to tell him.

100mph · 11/05/2012 00:25

At about 2yrs 9m my DS1 was told we couldn't fit his (sit/push on) motorbike into our boot while we travelled up the motorway to see his grandparents. He sat and thought for a minute before advising us to attach it to the back of the car with some string and pull it along like the Ninky Nonk. Definitely applied knowledge as we have no car rack/ winches etc..
However, what really brought tears to my eyes was several months earlier when he actually pulled his trousers up by himself rather than just expecting me to haul them up for him. He then started asking me to cry whenever he did something good!
My 11 month old DS has caused some intense melting over the last month as he carefully puts both his gentle hands on the sides of my face, looks me in the eyes and proceeds to come in for a kiss - This is major progress as when I said kiss kiss last month he would respond by giving me a double handed simultaneous (sp?) slap, chortling with delight..

Toomanycuppas · 11/05/2012 02:24

DD1, 15 months, was given a little handbag by grandma for Christmas. She opened it up, turned to grandma and said "money"? Grandma gave her some coins and she was so happy.

lolajane2009 · 11/05/2012 05:17

my son (8mths) attacked the metal waste bin yesterday at in laws but not before looking at me for a reaction then gave me a cheeky grin. I wasnt bothered tbh and no idea why he thought I would be.

a couple of weeks ago he did the sweetest thing at playgroup too. stroked a little boys hair that was lying next to him... the boy sidled up closer too so he would carry on. although, same day he also tried to remove another boys shoes too. was really pulling hard and i have a feeling he would have tried to eat them if he had got them off.
