Maths tutor needed in north London-but I can't find anyone suitable - help!

My dd (8) is in year 4. She is really struggling with maths, and this is affecting her confidence. I really want a tutor to come to the house once a week to help her, in the first instance, with the basics so she can feel braver.
Anyway-thus far I have had one woman turn up 25 minutes late to tell me it's too hilly where I live and so it would be tricky in the winter. Another said she doesn't like "silly children". And so on...
She (my dd) is a gentle soul, and needs someone who will inspire and engage her, will understand her anxiety, but not be soft.
I'd be so incredibly grateful if anyone knows anyone who fits this description and is willing to come to archway/ crouch end.

Have you looked into Kumon classes? Probably cheaper than a tutor.

Thank you. I think she needs some one-on-one help at the moment. But in time it looks like a great option.

With Kimon they assess the child then start the, just below the level they are at to get their confidence up. Why not try a trial lesson? They get little work papers that take ten minutes each day, and this really builds up their maths.

I would look in the Families magazine or Parents/Angels + Urchins. Does your school know anyone? Some of the teachers may do some tutoring.

they have a network of tutors and are very good at matching the type of tutor with what you need.
I used them for my dd when she was in y3 and was very anxious about maths.They were excellent and found us a tutor who worked in local schools helping out with maths and so was familiar with all the methods and techniques taught in the class room e.g. partitioning, number lines etc etc.

Why don't you ask one of the teachers at her school if they would be prepared to help out? They are often keen to earn extra money, particularly in the long school holidays. I have just arranged this for my Year 1 son who is also really struggling with Maths (even though he doesn't realise it!). I asked his teacher if she had any teaching friends who might be interested and, having checked the headmaster was OK with it, offered to do it herself!

We are also in north London and my DCs have been at the most amazing tutor for the last 2 years.

My youngest is 8, he needed help initially with writing and he was a little bit shy, didn't like to ask the teacher for help etc.
He has done amazingly well in the last 2 years, it is above and beyond what we expected and he is now over achieving in english and maths

The set up is a husband and wife, both teachers who have a whole house dedicated to the "school" ( they live next door!)
They are tutored in groups of 4, but are doing different work so as there are 2 tutors per group they get a lot of individual attention and individual work based on their assessment every fortnight.

It's about 10-15 minutes away from crouch end, they tutor in the evenings and weekends and it's a 2 hour session once a week.
It cost £18 for 2 hours and I can't recommend them highly enough.

hello. My husband has been teaching maths for three-years in a secondary school, but becuase of our recent move he is considering maybe working with younger children in maths tutoring. if none of those people work out go to your nearest uni and put up an ad in the maths dept, guaranteed to find someone

I know a tutor who might just be the one. My DS was in a similar situation (didn't even attempt questions because he thought they were too difficult, went into 'baby mode', never asked for help, would do everything he could to avoid maths prep) and our tutor turned him around. He won school maths prize for his year against everyone's expectations !When I asked for someone else she said she didn't have any spaces but it's summer and that could have changed. This is not an encouraging read! My sister has been using www.prepschooltutor.co.uk for her kid's French tutoring and they are finally offering Maths tuition as well. Not sure if they've tried that yet but they pride themselves in using quality, qualified teachers who have a lot of experience in the prep school sector. Don't be put off by the fact that it's online tuition - the kids love it! - Flexible and no time wasted. What is it about children and computers?!!!

If your daughter struggles, is it an issue with place value (understanding hundreds, tens and units). Does she know her number facts (pairs to 10 and other addition facts to numbers under 20, and times tables). What models and images (pictures of the numbers) does she use to understand the numbers?

But, I use uktutors, first tutors, tutor hunt and child care.co.uk to advertise. You can do postcode searches on all of these.

Failing that, ask some mums in the playground, or even ask in school if they know anyone who might be suitable.

You are right to want to find the right tutor who will nurture your little one, as well as just 'tutor'. Go with your instincts as you already have.
