the head mistress called me at work to 'discuss' an incident yesterday afternoon. It was 'ladies chest parts'

i thought that she'd have encountered this sort of thing before and didn't think it was that serious. Now do you think she is somewhat over reacting or should i take it a bit more seriously

ds said he typed in boobies

I think she's over reacting.

Pagwatch · 19/03/2011 21:22

Massive over reaction.

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 21:38

Children are protected. Our lot all know that when you log in, whatever you do on the computer is recorded under your name, including searches.
If you google something inappropriate at school, the site is blocked and a flag is sent.
So, he probably didn't get anywhere interesting.
It's not an overreaction, schools have a duty of care. The HT will have encountered this before, many times. She probably has a policy document detailing it all.
Did you not sign an internet use agreement, with your son, agreeing to act appropriately?
Yes, I have a teenage son.
We know all about inappropriate searching and getting caught out in this house. Grin

amerryscot · 19/03/2011 21:41

It's not an overreaction. Think about what the progression. How domypu think this reflects on your family values?

How do you.... (blasted autocorrection)

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 21:43

Family values?
How old is your son, amerryscot?

blushingm · 19/03/2011 21:43

goblin - no i didn't have to sign an internet agreement - i don't think so anyway.
But yes you're right that there should have been a net nanny or something like that to stop inappropriate material coming up
He said he did get some answers on google - i will have to ask him if it let him into one of the sites or not

I had to try not to snigger - i was at work when she rang me.....though i'm not sure why she didn't say 'breasts' rather than 'ladies chest area'

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 21:45

She probably doesn't know if you'd blow a gasket if she mentioned the unmentionable.

blushingm · 19/03/2011 21:45

family values?????? what are you implying merryscot?.............that we allow ds to watch hardcore porn etc at home???? I thought it's natural and healthy to be curious???

OP posts:
llareggub · 19/03/2011 21:46

Isn't this just the equivalent of looking up words in the dictionary? Didn't everyone do that as a child? ROFL at family values.

Feenie · 19/03/2011 21:46

He should have been doing the work set. He didn't. He knows that searching for inappropriate words in wrong. It's a potential child protection issue - headteacher has taken it seriously, and expects you to back the school up. And you should.

belledechocchipcookie · 19/03/2011 21:46

You need to teach your son that they are breasts not boobies!

Goblinchild · 19/03/2011 21:47

Yup, take it from a teacher of rampantly curious Y6, it is very normal.

Feenie · 19/03/2011 21:47

is wrong

blushingm · 19/03/2011 21:47

and what does it progress to???? Are you telling me you never looked up rude words in the dictionary?????

OP posts:
Hulababy · 19/03/2011 21:47

I don't think she is over reacting tbh. I talk as an ex teacher (of ICT) and a mum of an almost 9yo.

Yes, it is entirely natural at that age to eb curious and to have a quick search.

But it is entirely within reason for school to take a serious stance on it. They can't allow children to do it and get away with it at school on school computers. The search could have brought up anything.

Safe searches and nanny web sites are not fool proof. New sites occure daily and new sites get through the security far more than may people realise. It is far better to teach children about safe searching than relying entirely on such security features.

Most schools, even at this age, discuss intenet safety with children and what they can ad can't do online, esp at school. Many schools, even primaries, ask children to sign internet use contracts.

Googling "boobies" or whatever is a breach of that and your DS most probably knew he wasn';t supposed to. So he deserves to get into trouble for it and to know that his mum now knows what he did and that the head isn't too impressed with it. Then he won't try it again at school and potentilly find something worse.

I worked in secondary and it was a serious issue if a child was found to be searching for "inappropriate material."

Panzee · 19/03/2011 21:47

Teacher here, sniggering. :o

amerryscot · 19/03/2011 21:48

Expecting a net nanny is just putting the blame on someone else. How about taking responsibility and teaching your son to respect women?

blushingm · 19/03/2011 21:48

yes it's wrong that he wasn't doing the work he'd been set but i can't see how it's a child protection issue - can you explain why you think that? (i honestly don't get it it, i'm not being funny)

I had to send a report to the LEA network this week because a search for pictures of 'lovely biscuits' brought up an unsavoury picture of a lady displaying her..erm..lovely biscuits. Hmm Filters are not infallible.

FannyFifer · 19/03/2011 21:50

Big over reaction, no big deal, remember looking up naughty words in dictionary.

Feenie · 19/03/2011 21:50

Because children should not be exposed to unsavoury pictures of naked ladies!

Hulababy · 19/03/2011 21:50

blushingm - using the internet to search sexual terms is very different to looking up the same words online, where the materila is likely to be much more graphic and inappropriate. i am sure you mut realise this. The two are not really that comparable if you think of the differenc in the results you would get.
