at 2 year 3 months what could your child do/say?

Just wondering what a normal 2 years and 3 month old child can do? I used to have a book with all the usual info about developmental stages but I'd also like to hear from you mums about your own children. I'm expecting my little one to be quite average.

Don't worry about it, really. The kids have never read the books, they all do things at their own pace. It doesn't really help to compare them, someone is always left feeling inadequate.

Just enjoy your child for who they are

Do you really expect anyone to know exactly what their dcs were doing at 2yrs and 3 months exactly.

You sound like you have a PFB who you dont expect to be quite average at all.

Dont panic, they all do things at different times, thats part of the fun, there are no hard rules

Thanks. She is a lovely little girl and has a great sence of fun. I feel more relaxed about the development thing with her being my second and have trusted instincts more in relation to child rearing. I do keep thinking that I should pull my finger out though and at least have a flick through my toddler books - toddler taming/what to expect etc..

I think my main worry with her is that she finds it hard to share but I'm sure this must be typical ofher age?

Well DS was 2y4m when DD was born so I remember fairly well
He could talk in sentences but not complicated one (so no concept of time etc)
He could walk run and hop
He knew I had a baby in my tummy and then he got the concept of 'sister' quite quickly but I don't think he put the 2 together iyswim
He could eat cereal without spilling (as long as he was paying attention)
Couldn't recognise any letters, I don't think, other than maybe his first initial and a couple of others
What else do you want to know?

Yes he's only starting learning about sharing etc in the last 6 months or so

PFB= Precious Firstborn, it's a MN way of saying you're inclined to have unrealistic expectations :).

DC4 is 2y8m and
Can't talk in sentences,
Can run and hop,
Doesn't know his colours or how to count
Can't remember which farm animals make which sound
Is hit-and-miss about knowing what his body parts are called
Can pedal and steer a trike quite well
Can't dress himself
Doesn't want to be toilet trained (but probably could do it if he wanted)
Hates to share :). I'd say that skill comes on very slowly over next few years.

DS2 is 2y 2m. I don't know many other children that age particularly, but I think he's fairly average (similar mostly to my DS1).

Talks in 3-4 word phrases. Odd sentences. Pronounciation not quite there yet. Probably outsider might not understand 50% of what he's saying. I don't understand maybe 5% of what he's saying.

Can run and jump - tends to fall over a fair bit though!

Knows names of a few colours but insists they are different from what they are (pink is blue, etc).

Knows loads of animals(and Cbeebies characters [hblush]) - his fav thing

Knows some body parts, couple of basic shapes but no letter.

Can't dress himself (altho' nursery think he should be able to put on his coat and shoes - so I'll be interested in others responses)

Not potty trained, showing some signs. Probably me more reticent lazy than him!

Sharing...erm...no, not at all. Everything is 'MINE' or 'NO'.

Can feed himself moderately well with spoon and fork. Still has a preference for fingers depending on what it is though. Can drink from a cup (wouldn't trust him around the house with it though). Getting more fussy with food.

Can understand instructions, but hit and miss whether he'll follow them!

Tantrums...lots!

DS2 is 2yrs 9 mths

Talks very well 10-12 word sentences, lots of questions, 99% of what he says understandable

Can run, jump and climb (too well!)

Knows the colours but gets them wrong when asked to tell me the colour of something

Knows animals and sounds they make, knows body parts

Understands emotions sad and happy and cross
Can "count" and understands mathematical concept of one / two / three (the rest is just repeating numbers)

Can pedal a trike - finally!

Can't dress himself but does co-operate (mostly) when getting dressed, not toilet trained

Can follow instructions (get mummy her shoes) and ask for what he wants (snack, drink etc)

Can use a spoon and a fork (think this is because he goes to daycare tho)

And yes, lots of hilarious tantrums over nothing!!

Ds at that age :-

Couldn't talk much at all
Nowhere near dressing himself, toilet training or anything else
Can't remember much really

Now:- Pretty normal 3.8 year old. Talks non-stop, sings, dresses self (mostly), puts shoes on, knows numbers, recognises some letters, draws sort of recognisable things sometimes when in the mood etc.

Dd is not 2 yet. She talks a lot, in sentences, can count,is potty trained and can manage a fair amount of her own clothes and easily puts her shoes on.

It doesn't mean anything, I very much doubt that dd is cleverer then ds. They all even out really.

DS2 is 2yr 3M.
Language not great, can't pronounce several sounds still. Can put up to 3 words together.

Counts to 10. Doesn't recongise any letters yet. Sometimes does colours, though most things are blue (even when they're not)

Not potty trained yet.

Physically, runs, jumps, climbs, scoots well and (usually stops at the road!), rides bike, can take bottom half and shoes off.

Socially plays well independently and with other little ones, some side by side play still, getting better at sharing.

Colours were still hit & miss and we had a long period of mixingup red & blue
Started to show an interest in numbers, but no proper counting

Doesn't want to be toilet trained (and no where near ready, really- that was last September, I think we had a few goes maybe starting at Christmas, but we only really did the don't-look-back one this summer)

DD is 2 exactly and can

Speak in full sentences. She has a very large vocabulary and is never difficult to understand
Count to 20
Knows colours and recognises numbers up to 10
Can undress herself and almost dress herself
Knows around 20 animals and the noises they make
Understands concepts such as now/later
Run/jumps/climbs/stands one one foot!
Knows and can sing about 10 different nursery rhymes and songs in full
Can pedal a trike
Recognises family members and knows them by name from photos without prompting (people she only sees a few times a year )

A few more

She knows shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
She can draw straight, curvy and zigzag lines (Thanks Squiglet )
Knows the names of 4/5 of her friends and chats about them and going to playgroup with them and their physical attributes
Knows how to say hello, goodbye and thank you in Spanish (my sis and her family lives in Spain so it's something I've encouraged).

My DD is 2.2yrs.

She knows all her shapes including hexagon and cresent.
Knows colours and numbers. Counts to 20.
Recognises the alphabet phonetically and has recently started spelling out and reading 3 letter words.

Speaks in full sentences and has a wide vocab.
Understands concept of times, ie We went to toddler group this morning.

Shes potty trained.

Feeds herself well with fork,almost there cutting with a knife.

Re sharing- She is pretty good actually but if another child wants the toy she has she will just give it to them instead of fighting for it. Im sure that will change eventually!
She is very good with her sister though (5mths) and will happily share her teddys and toys with her. :)

DD still under 2, but her cousin (a girl) is 2y 3m and I think can talk in sentences of 4-5 words, has a good vocab, can count (properly, up to about 5, i.e. will look at a collection of objects and tell you how many of the same thing there are), can name her letters, do puzzles of about 8 pieces (with a bit of help), can run and jump, is just now starting to be potty-trained, not sure about dressing, pretty sure knows body parts, knows shapes, can sing a few songs in total (sings herself to sleep - very cute).

DD2 is 2.5

She can draw a pentagon with her teeth.

She speaks enoug Mandarin to buy her daily newspaper.

She can carve the Sunday roast.

She does charity work with disadvantaged children at the weekend.

I think she is fairly average [hwink].

having some perspective on this I can honestly say that it all pans out

many the brightest button in the box shines less brightly later... I think it makes it hard for an average child when the parent raises expectations hugely in infancy . Children learn what they are taught.

I believe in play.

My kids are all pretty academic - NONE were Einstein at 2

My two year old is very very advanced at eating
He would win competitions!

Mine can say maybe 20 words? DS1 was the same, very slow to start but really great now @ 4. Only sentence he has is "be nice to millie" (the dog!) , oh and he can sort of say "to infinity and beyond!"

Can sort of count to 5, but probably only because of cbeebies, not any great intellect.

erm.... good at clmbing slide ladders.... nothing amazing, just a toddler really!

My DS2 (DC4) is 2.2 and is very much like Imarriedafrogs!

Although I am now trying not to obsess that he only says two words and am sticking with the HVs opinion that he is internalising and will one day say "mummy can I have some juice please" as his first sentence!

He can also run extremely fast!
