Just wondering what a normal 2 years and 3 month old child can do? I used to have a book with all the usual info about developmental stages but I'd also like to hear from you mums about your own children. I'm expecting my little one to be quite average.

AScary... so cute.

ManiDeadi · 21/10/2010 13:22

DS is 2yrs 3months exactly.

He can run, but I have only seen him jump when having a tantrum Grin.

He can't even undress himself very well, never mind dress himself!

Can't pedal a trike.

Is capable of following instructions, but most of the time doesn't.

Talks in sentences eg "Mummy got a sore leg" "Daddy gone to work" "More chocolate please Mummy" Blush

Can count to 4.

Becoming very independent ie where he used to stand beside me/hold hands, he now runs off.

Has absolutely no fear or sense of danger ie would shout "Buzz Lightyear" and launch himself off the top of the climbing frame if you let him Hmm

I absolutely adore him [hsmile].

ManiDeadi · 21/10/2010 13:24

Oh yes also, lots of tantrums and just "lying down" on the floor of the supermarket etc.

Snatches toys from other children.

Doesn't share.

ManiDeadi · 21/10/2010 13:26

Sorry I keep forgetting things!

Can name most animals, parts of body.

Knows colours but gets them all mixed up.

We are nowhere near potty training. I am not even going to attempt it fora while yet.

NoahAndTheWhale · 21/10/2010 13:27

I can't remember much about DS or DD when they were 2 Blush.

They are 5 and 6 now and pretty nice :)

shinyshoes · 21/10/2010 13:32

kiwidreamer · 21/10/2010 14:28

DS is 2.3yrs and can tell me what he wants whatever it might be, sentences becoming more complicated
knows the majority of colours, all body parts (13mths), basic shapes (17mths)
counts to 20 but 13 - 20 are higgledy piggledy
will say the right letter of the alphabet when I sing song it and stop for him to say the next letter
uses his manners (please / thank you / excuse me please / pardon me) 80% of the time unprompted
cant pedal his trike
cant dress himself / put shoes on but tries
not even close to TT
cracks himself up with renditions of Old MacDonald having brocolli / potato / chocolate on his farm

Boys2mam · 22/10/2010 20:54

My DS2 is 2yrs 1mth and can;

tell me "no bed"
"fireman sam"
undress himself
tell his big brother "go bed"
put his own shoes (not necessarily on the right feet)
feed the cat
help himself to orange juice out the fridge
feed the cat milk out the fridge

He is smart and cute and charming and makes me so proud every day.

Reading a thread like this makes me realise he is super-cute and EXACTLY where he should be.

p.s - my friends mindee is not 18 mths and can read car licence plates out - numerically and phonetically - tis very weird!!

Firawla · 23/10/2010 15:28

my ds1 is 2 yrs 4 months

he can talk in sentences
he knows pretty much words for everything tho
knows all the shapes colours animal noises body parts etc
can recognise some letters and numbers not all of them
can count to 10, just in terms of he knows the numbers to recite. if you asked him to count how many items are there i think he can only do about 2 or 3?
knows loads of songs/nursery rhymes/cbeebies theme tunes, picks them up easily
knows quite a few signs for things
can run climb jump hop and all that kind of thing
can ride scooter and bikes
feeds self, can use cultlery
still drinks out of bottles though for milk
can do puzzles not sure how many peices would b his maximum we only have upto about 12 peice @ home
understands now/later
understands directions which way to go park, childrens centre etc
will share quite well unless its a child who has not shared with him, then he retaliates doesnt want to share with them either
likes to play with children very sociable
good with babies
can draw circles and straight lines and scribbles, try to draw objects like cars helicopter but they dont look accurate or anything
obsessed with transports
good @ listening concentrating to stories will sit there for ages
not potty trained
doesnt dress himself, can take clothes off but generally he doesnt i do it for him
can be very hyper

cant think what else.. i mainly had a look @ other peoples lists and copied some of the relevant stuff

TheFallenMadonna · 23/10/2010 15:37

DD couldn't talk at all at this age. Only grunt Hmm

Nor was she toilet trained.

Um.

She was good at emptying things IIRC.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/10/2010 15:46

DS is 2.3.

He understands the concept of sharing, he just doesn't like it when it is someone else's turn - although yesterday he did hand a toy over to his friend and say 'here you are X, your turn now' and I nearly fell over Grin

Natters away ALL day long, full sentences and conversations but DH and I are both chatterers so this is no surprise!

Colours, shapes etc etc - yes, yes.

Not potty trained, couldn't care less what he is wearing although he does like his new George Pig slippers and takes them to bed with him.
Can undress himself, but not dress himself.

He is polite, utterly cute and charms everyone he meets, he has also taken to chatting up girls recently which is an alarming development! He walks up, 'hello, I'm DS' and then hugs them. Sometimes this is well received, sometimes not. Generally it is the mothers who are pulling a snotty face, silly mares.

Grin
bendybanana · 23/10/2010 17:39

great to read all these comments - I love how kids have different stregnths and r so varied.

we are really working on the sharing thing.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 23/10/2010 18:58

DD is 2.6

Is toilet trained
can walk, run, jump, hop and stand on one leg
can dress and undress herself (sometimes back to front and upside down but the intent is there)
says about 15-20 words but no sentences
can use a knife, fork and spoon
drinks from open cup very well
no shape recognition
no colour recognotion
can phonetically repeat the alphabet sounds and recognise a few of the letters
can recognise when there is one and two of something
doesn't really like to share but will if told to
doesn't really play with other children
not too many tantrums (yet)
recognises all animal noises
knows all body parts even eyebrows and ankles!

Cant't really think of anything else.

She is a bit slow with her speech but writing this has made me think I should concentrate on the things she can do, not what she can't :)

PoppetUK · 14/06/2011 23:52

DS is 2yrs 2 months. He's number 3. I could have given you a long list with my PFB. I've had to really think with number 3 because I know I've not taught him a 1/3 of what I did the first two at the same age.

He loves balls, he has a cheeky humour, he says a few numbers, jumps, runs, talks less that the other two did at this age (strings together 3/4 words). He has no fear of water and happy to jump. Likes to walk rather than pushchair. Wants to be part of everything the other two are doing. He can use a toilet but isn't potty trained. He can get out of his bed many times. Is able to watch tv for a longer period now :). He like all the things that I never let the first two do. He knows how to tidy up. He feeds himself.

I know I don't teach him as much but he's happy and picks up loads from his siblings.

PoppetUK · 14/06/2011 23:53

ps I knows his way around the iphone and has worked out a few of the kiddy games on there.

Rosebud05 · 14/06/2011 23:59

My ds has just turned 2 and can sing nearly every Cbeebies theme tune and jingle Blush.

winnybella · 15/06/2011 00:17

DD is 2.5

She can run and hop
Drinks from an open cup, uses cutlery, doesn't make a mess (bare odd cornflake here and there)
Knows shapes, colours, body parts, counts to 10 in 2 languages and to 20 in 3rd
Speaks well in 2 languages and only a few words in 3rd (but this will change as she'll be going to nursery in Oct.)
Recently has started playing with other children, sharing- depends, not all the time
Lots of tantrums
Wants to do everything herself ie open the door, dress etc, but can't do some things properly yet so cue more tantrums
Haven't even introduced the concept of letters yet- likes being read to, though
Can draw a person with a body, arms, legs and eyes, ears, nose, mouth etc
Haven't taken her on her tricycle in the last few weeks, but then she sort of could pedal for a bit but preferred to be pushed
Not potty trained, haven't really tried yet, although yesterday she sat down on potty in her nappy and proceeded to poo Hmm so she might be getting the idea

winnybella · 15/06/2011 00:19

Oh yes, and she can actually count objects, not just recite the numbers

singarainbow · 15/06/2011 00:43

My DD is 1.9 and can
keep her hair in bunches all day
put her hand in her dirty nappy at lightning speed, faster than I can stop
sleep through an atomic bomb
say "ta dah" when standing at the top of a 6 foot climbing frame with no hands!
Grin

Galena · 15/06/2011 11:01

DD is 2.2, although she was born 3 months early and has just been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy.

She:
Knows hundreds of words
Strings 3/4 words together
Knows huge numbers of body parts, colours, animals, shapes, etc and identifies them
Can do 2-piece puzzles and 'fit the piece in the hole' puzzles. Haven't tried her on puzzles with more pieces.
Loves to thread beads onto laces and stick stickers everywhere
Draws a cat's face with eyes, ears, nose, mouth and whiskers (Not always recognisable though!)
Loves books
Recognises a number of letters and numbers
Recites numbers to 12 and counts reliably to 3 or 4
Can drink out of an open cup but likes to pour the drink out all over the floor/table so seldom has an open cup!
Feeds herself with fork/spoon but rather messy
Walks 17 steps unaided, cannot jump, run, hop, etc
Can't undress/dress herself
Can't pedal trike
Not even close to being toilet trained

It's great that children are all different!

Missmodular · 15/06/2011 21:27

Interesting thread - the third year is such a rollercoaster of development!

DD2 is 2.3

She can:
Talk in sentences - 'I don't want to go to bed' being her favourite
Correctly name colours and shapes
Count to eleven
Sing songs and nursery rhymes
Ride a scooter - never put her on a trike so not sure about pedalling
Has just started doing the wooden jigsaws where you slot shapes into holes.

Can't yet dress herself, and usually tries to prevent me from doing so too
Can't hop or jump, but it's cute watching her try
Walks and runs, but if there's something to trip over, down she goes
Isn't potty trained
Feeds herself but usually ends up covered in food and can't drink from an open cup without dropping it

She has the most beautiful smile and worships the ground her elder sister walks on :)

bayley8 · 15/06/2011 21:53

my dd2 is 2 years and a few weeks she says;
no more mommy
2 crackers please mommy
mommys car, daddys care, white car, etc
dd1 is naughty, dd2 is a good girl
come on mommy
go mommy drive now

she says loads and loads, dd1 on the otherhand who is 3 years 5 months had to go to speech therapy still refers to sheep as baa baas!

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2011 22:03
