Valentine?

This is a big name in my family (often shortened to Val), and I like it because it's quite unusual as well as the family connection. DH not so keen though he's ok for it to be a middle name, he's just worried about school teasing etc... (though from a teenage girl's perspective quite fanciable no?!) Keen to get some objective reactions on this one!

Not loving it, I've got to be honest

valiumSingleton · 10/07/2010 08:54

I love it, but I wouldn't use it!

If you shorten it to Val it loses all Romeo factor and becomes totally Doonican, woolly jumper-esque.

valiumSingleton · 10/07/2010 08:56

ps, looking back to my school days there was one, possibly two boys who could have carried off the name Valentine.

5DollarShake · 10/07/2010 09:41

Val as a nn is, unfortunately, not sweetening the deal...

I'm with your DH I'm afraid - and would be pushing for it as a middle name.

SirBoobAlot · 10/07/2010 11:22

I really don't like it, sorry.

CuppaLambriniJanice · 10/07/2010 16:35

DP's grandad was called Valentine. He died before I met DP, so I've never met a Valentine in real life!

I think you have to be a certain sort of boy to carry off the name Valentine. Exotic, tall, with dark, brooding eyes, long floppy hair, foreign accent. The sort of boy you get in teenage Chick-lit.

Middle name probably a safer bet.

CapitalText · 10/07/2010 17:06

I like it.

BertieBasset · 10/07/2010 18:50

Valentine big in my family too! I think it is lovely but I agree there is a lot of teasing potential.

It has only been used for men in our family, if you have a girl perhaps Valentina?

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 10/07/2010 18:54

No - it would be less than kind to saddle your son with Valentine or Val imvho. And as a teenage girl, could you imagine fancying/going out with Valentine?!!

SpecialPatrolGroup · 10/07/2010 18:58

Love it! Isn't tht bloke who cooks off the telly called Valentine - sexy posh bloke who likes seasonal food?

scottishmummy · 10/07/2010 19:01

beautiful name

annasophia · 10/07/2010 19:38

I like it. I know a Valentin who is gorgeous.

LetThereBeRock · 10/07/2010 19:53

I really don't like it.

Kathleen123 · 11/07/2010 14:33

No to Valentine - unless you have amazing genetics that can guarantee your son is going to be devastatingly handsome (I think you need to look like Robert Pattinson to carry it off).

Love it as a middle name though.

misslostmarbles · 11/07/2010 21:50

my son was born on valentines day and he escaped being called it. i do like the name but i couldnt see myself coping with the hassle of such a strange name. if its a family name then use it preferably as a middle name. But it is up to you.

meadowlarks · 11/07/2010 22:29

Valentine is a masculine name, as far as I know. Valentina is the feminine version. I don't mind either, but it might be a bit of a burden to bear.

Lavitabella · 11/07/2010 22:32

Valentino is very popular in Italy and I've been considering it too.

I don't think of Val Doonican, I think of Val Kilmer!

othersideofchannel · 12/07/2010 13:34

Valentin (pronounced Valen-teen) is quite popular in Germany.

Pasiphae · 12/07/2010 14:30

I like Valentin (Valen-tein ~ish~) like the French say it. Valentine feels too girly for my liking.
All right for a middle name, but that's it.

florence2511 · 12/07/2010 21:34

My dd goes to school with a Valentine who is a sweet little boy. At first I wasn't sure of the name but am coming round to it as I just think of this sweet little boy.

The name also makes me think of the TV Chef Valentine Warner who is rather scrummy.

My DH hates the name though.

Hedwig3 · 13/07/2010 10:09

Love it with nn Lenny.

mopsyflopsy · 13/07/2010 10:29

I like Valentine. Val or Lenny are good nicknames.

sonniebonnie · 13/07/2010 10:37

Love it. Reminds me of Valentine Warner.

bigbluebump · 13/07/2010 11:42

I like Valentine for a boy and Valentina for a girl.

tammytoby · 13/07/2010 12:55

Oh yes, Valentine Warner is rather scrummy .
