Is Edward a nice name?

We already have a ds called Joseph.

Can anyone think of another name that is classic but not overly popular?

We want something that will stand the test of time, not something particularly modern.

We were thinking Edward, Eddie for nick name.

We also love Matthew but our last name starts with an M so really sounds awful. Any ideas?

Dc3 is very likely going to be William/Will or Edward/Ed unless a blinding naming light suddenly hits but imo it's also a safe bet there will be a lot Edwards about, given it's significant increase in popularity over the last 12 yrs (the Edward surge is just filtering through to secondary) and especially so in the last two yrs with the Twilight influence.

Matthew Markham btw is a very handsome name.

My cousin is called Matthew with a sirname that begins with M, it sounds fine. When you use a first name and sirname, people don't generally shorten the first name.

For example a doctor would call Matthew Markham, not Matt Markham. Now if you called him Mark, that would be silly.

Edward was our second choice for DS's name. We were saving it for a potential DS2. BUT now it's shooting up in popularity due to Twilight I've been put off a bit. I still love the name, I just don't want to have a child that's got the same name as loads of kids whose mums had vampire crushes.

I love Edward [dgs2]

Great name (biased, DS2 is Edward, mostly known as Ed)

Ted / Teddy and Ned are awful though. Nicknames must be Ed or Eddie, or even Woody, but NOT Ted or Ned!

Matthew Markham sounds fine to me though.

DS1's first name starts with the same letter as our surname , as does mine (now I'm married, my maiden name didn't) and I think both names have a nice rhythm to them.

Edward is great - if I have a boy in the future I'm going to call him this!

Edwards a lovely name.

Tortington · 19/07/2010 09:19

its very 'of the time' at the moment with the twilight saga

yes yes i know its been around ages
kings etc

but there is a modern link to be associated.

i love the name - hate robert pattinson for fwiw

but just think it should be put on the listof your considerations.

i know i wouldnt want people to think i called my kid after a vampite i wanted to fuck

RP= ugly
