Is Edward a nice name?

We already have a ds called Joseph.

Can anyone think of another name that is classic but not overly popular?

We want something that will stand the test of time, not something particularly modern.

We were thinking Edward, Eddie for nick name.

We also love Matthew but our last name starts with an M so really sounds awful. Any ideas?

Love Edward. Don't worry about twilight nonsense, will all have blown over in a year or two.

I wanted to call our son Edward but oh wouldn't let me (he is bvu).

VintageGardenia · 01/07/2010 21:16

Edward is a brilliant name, you cannot go wrong with Edward. Edward is also bigger than Twilight.

(I actually think Matt Markham sounds good too though.)

Isitmeorisither · 01/07/2010 21:17

I adore Stefan, always have but dh says 'no bloody way!'

Steven is Joseph's (ds1) middle name so that's not an option.

DH's name is David so that's out.

Andrew not my cup of tea but a perfectly nice name.

I just can't seem to decide now, most of the names I like are already in my family it seems!

So the Twilight thing shouldn't put me off then no?

LOL! Edmund is DS2. Not showing any Dexter-like tendencies at 1.5 and he's mostly Eddy anyways

Isitmeorisither · 01/07/2010 21:25

Oh God I am sorry .

Like I said my feelings towards the name are completely unfounded!

I really don't know why I feel that way because I have never even met and Edmund

and as far as I know I have never met a serial killer either!

Thank you for seeing the funny side of my clumsy comment!

Edward and William both excellent choices.

MaryMungo · 01/07/2010 21:47

My dear, we all come into Baby Names at our own peril. As someone who spent 20 minutes once seriously considering Dorcas Louise as a viable DD option before coming to my senses, I appreciate all the outspoken ladies here

Lotkinsgonecurly · 01/07/2010 21:53

How about Fred / Freddie. Could either be from Alfred or Frederick or simply Fred.

We too have a Joseph, what a fab name !

coffeefestival · 01/07/2010 21:55

Edward is a very nice name.

Isitmeorisither · 01/07/2010 21:55

Doracus??? Oh dear my luv .

Clearly it's me who has issues regarding Edmund's not the name itself!

I have to say I don't mind people being critical about mu name choices either. In
fact when

I told my sister I was calling ds1 Joseph she desperately tried to talk me out of it,

saying it sounded like an old wrinkley sheep farmer's name

but I went with it anyway and I still love it.

Names are so subject to times aswell. One bad Edward on EastEnders and suddenly everyone hates it!

Ahhh all good fun really!

How about

Aaron
Luke
Ethan
Alexander
Noah
Nicholas
Aidan
Dylan
Thomas
Samuel
Elias
Adam
G eorge
Henry
Peter
Edwin
Zachary
Saul
Charles
Nathaniel
Evan
Luke
Gregory

Isitmeorisither · 01/07/2010 22:46

Thomas is nice too. So may lovely boys names!

Not keen on Samuel, again I don't know why.

Dylan is lovely but quite popular in this area, not that that's a particularly bad thing really.

Adam is great too, very timeless.

My friend has a William (Will) and a new Edward. I used to have a teddy called Edward, but other than that I like them and have nothing against them!

Isitmeorisither · 02/07/2010 09:33

Hmmm well ds has just informed me the his little brother will be called 'fireman sam sam sam'

Edward it is then! Thanks guys just wanted to make sure I wasn't hormonal and not thinking clearly. When pregnant with ds1, for weeks I said we were going to call him Simeon until dh told me it sounded like a breed of monkey and I went back to Joseph .

Love Edward. It would have been my ds's name only MIL went a bit catsbum mouth about it because dh has a cousin (who he never sees, btw) with the same name. So we chose another to keep the peace. But it is a top name!

emmyloo2 · 02/07/2010 09:57

Edward is a gorgeous name and is one of our choices. I do like Ted and Teddy for nn but also like Ed and Eddie.

Other options we are/were considering:

Thomas
Nicholas
Benjamin
Max
Luka
Daniel
William
Harry
Hugo

georgieseale · 02/07/2010 10:04

Edward is a bit stiff but ok for a birth certificate, he could be known as Eddie? much cooler!

flopsy1974 · 02/07/2010 10:07

Edward is a good name but not sure on the shortened versions. I have a Patrick and a William and was going to have a Daniel for third boy until we found out that bump was pink.

porcupine11 · 02/07/2010 10:14

Ned means something bad to Scottish people I think, so would avoid that

LittleSilver · 02/07/2010 11:42

Nice, but WAY overused/unoriginal now

Hedwig3 · 02/07/2010 12:10

Not for me but LOTS of others seem to like it at the moment if our schools here are anything to go by!

Kathleen123 · 02/07/2010 14:20

Love Edward and Ted and Eddie.

mummytosquidgies · 02/07/2010 14:25

I love the name Edward, it's been on my boys list since before DS1 (DS2 due next month), but DH doesn't like it, as it sounds awful in Danish (DH is Danish and we live in Denmark, so important to us names sound the same in both languages).

He won't even entertain it as a middle name (sob).

But I do think it's a gorgeous name!

maxbear · 02/07/2010 21:40

My DS1 is an Edward usually known as Ed or Eddie, it is a great name, not too popular but one people have heard of, an it will always be a good name, for a child or an adult.
