Dh was talking about Enid last night.
It was very high on the list for dd and ds, but i had completely forgotten about it.
It seems to fit the plain, simple elegantness of the Jean and Mary type names.
I might be loving it again.
What do you think?
It may come back into style with all the 'E' names about at the moment (Ella, Ellie, Elsie), and I must say I could never use a name that is as popular as Ellie

I don't think you have to worry about it coming back into style I think it's a very harsh sounding name, and will be forever linked to Blyton who was a bit of a child hater by all accounts

Do you like Edith?

Would you pronounce Enn-id or Ee-nid? The latter makes me think Blyton. The former is how my great aunt pronounces it, which I like better - but she would probably spend her likfe now correxting people on how to say it.

How about Evelyn, then it can be Evie for short and if she's cutesy, and the grown up version if she's more of a scary type!!

I don't mind the Blyton association at all, my eldest dd was named after my favourite author (partly) and people used to ask me a lot if I was a fan. I didn't mind
I am not naming for Blyton, I just happen to like the name!
Not an Edith fan , i do not like Edie. My neighbour has an Evelyn so that is a nono, and i really do not like Evie - far to cutesy!

I love old lady names (apart from a couple) this just doesn't have a nice sound. I prefer Ethel. Ethel has a prettier sound! Edith is nicer too.

As an aside Enid Blyton actually adored children and remained one herself for her life really. Difficulties in her early life meant she didn't really have the capacity to parent well and so wasn't a good mother IMO. That and the fact she became so fixated with her writing.

It's the "id" that I don't like, as it sounds a bit harsh to me (I'm not particularly keen on Ingrid, Astrid or Mildred either).

I love it. Don't worry about the Blyton thing - my sister-in-law was born in 1984 (before Kylie Minogue became famous) and is called Kylie. It really suits her, she's nothing like Kylie Minogue, and nobody who knows her ever thinks of it for a second. I'd like to persuade my DH on this one because it's unusual and pretty but not cutesy.

I like it, was 'The Worst Witch' called Enid? No obvious variation that I can think of for a teen who doesn't like it though.

Enid and Ethel both hideous. Harsh sounding and conjure up vision of cross old lady who smells of piss.

So many pretty and unusual names about, why pick something this ugly? If you want plain, how about Jane, Anne, Sarah?

I would have said absolutely not until I saw the film of Ghost World which made it a little uber-geeky & cool.

I'd never use it myself, but it's not in the Ethel league I don't think. Much prefer Edith though.

Mabel is nicer if you like plain names. Or Dora.
