Saskia

I have just read on another thread that this name is considered "chavvy".

Now, I'm not a categoriser, but wondered what other people's perception of the name is.

Thanks.

I quite like it. I've only ever met one Saskia, who was a university student.

SirBoobAlot · 08/06/2010 18:21

My immediate thought is Sasquatch.

InmyheadIminParis · 08/06/2010 18:22

I love it, and have never, ever thought of it as a chavvy name - I was a bit to read that on the other thread, too. The only Saskia I know is anything but chavvy.

ib · 08/06/2010 18:35

I love it. Don't worry, anything that is not from the royal family is considered chavvy by someone on mn

PixieCake · 08/06/2010 18:38

I don't think it's at all chavvy.
I've only known one Saskia and she was a posh ballerina-type.

LuluF · 08/06/2010 18:41

I know a lovely Saskia (nn Sasquatch, incidentally) who is lovely - in her late 30s, anything but 'chavvy'. I was quite surprised to hear that opinion, too.

I have an aunt who lives in the Netherlands - she said every other female is called Saskia there.

I was talking to a friend when I was expecting one of my DCs - She's a teacher. She said, for her, the name had connotations of a spiteful, naughty little girl - and I was surprise about that, too.

SixtyFootDoll · 08/06/2010 18:42

I think its a lovely name and would never think it chavvy - god I hate that word.

DramaInPyjamas · 08/06/2010 18:47

Love the name.
Most names on here are considered 'chavvy' at some point or another.

And, I know of an Arthur, William and a George, all of whom have what are known as 'chav' parents.

Hate the word chav being used to describe things tbh.

Romilly70 · 08/06/2010 18:49

saskia sounds posh & pretty!

LetThereBeRock · 08/06/2010 18:50

I don't think it's at all 'chavvy' but I don't like it.I think it's a rather ugly name.

Tortington · 08/06/2010 18:53

it sounds like the name you would give to a german shephard bitch

I would actually think of it as posh!
Probably because it featured in a Joanna Trollope book with Aga cookers and the like.

Would also think of it as posh rather than chavvy. It's on my shortlist so I'm v.keen on it! My only concern is whether it sounds too 'harsh' for a baby girl - am mulling it over!

chaostrulyreigns · 08/06/2010 21:36

Ok. Apologies for the Chat by stealth. but the reason I ask is I have a Saskia too.

We chose it as we thought it was classless.

EleanorD - mine is nn Sassie (although she's rebelling now and insists on Sassy!) which I don't think is harsh.

Love it, was by "girl" option, but I had a boy..............

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2010 21:44

I saw that thread too, OP.

A few years ago there were 2 Saskia's on Big Brother, with I think may have lead some people to think it's "chavvy", but I really don't

The only RL one I've met is 5 with V' posh parents.

Missus84 · 08/06/2010 21:46

I'd have thought of it as posh if anything - I've known too, one posh and one Dutch.

saslou · 08/06/2010 21:57

I like Saskia and would not consider it at all 'chavvy'. If anything, I think of it as 'posh'.

chaostrulyreigns · 08/06/2010 22:30

When we had just named her there was an Eas'enders connection that people kept mentioning. Now we don't watch it so I started to get a bit fed up.

Had a great response though - "Nooooo, she was Rembrandt's wife".

I've just been watching Saskia Reeve on 'Luther' and she's quite posh (not in that though) and Vanessa Feltz has a Saskia, if I remember correctly.

chaostrulyreigns · 08/06/2010 22:44

Ahha - that's the one.
