Okay, go easy on me, first baby and first appeal for feedback in this folder! We have our boys' names sorted but have been struggling with girls' names. We want a 3 syllable name as our surname is one syllable (It sounds a lot like Home).

Names I like but DH doesn't:

  • Victoria
  • Eleanor
  • Miranda

Names DH likes but I don't (no offence intended):

  • Penelope
  • Stephanie
  • Rhiannon

We both like:

Rosalind - means 'pretty rose' in Spanish or 'red dragon' in German, both work as we're expecting a little red head. Lots of lovely nicknames, Rosa, Rosie, Lindy etc
Mirabel - like Isabel which I love but not as ubiquitous
Felicity - nicknames Flick, Fee and it means happy
Jemima - nicknames Jem, Mimi
Helena - but not convinced this works as our surname begins with H

Potential middle names include Elizabeth, Zoe or Blake (a family surname).

Feedback appreciated

Felicity is nice. I also like Helena, I love it when a first name and surname start with the same letter (what is the proper word for that)!

As for the other names, I really don't like Rhiannon. The others are ok but don't grab me.

eatyourveg · 06/06/2010 19:15

Felicity is four syllables. I had a three syllable surname and longed to be Jane Smith or something else short rather than the 7 syllable mouthful my parents gave me. I like the name in itself but I would be careful that it matches your surname.

My favourite is Jemima or if four syllables is an option then Persephone

SkaterGrrrrl · 06/06/2010 19:16

Thanks for that stripey. Realy love Helena but was worried she'll sound like a founder of Hogwarts (they're all called things like Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw).

Want to know the proper word too now!

That's it. Best name I ever heard was Molly McCarthy. Just loved the combination for some reason.

SkaterGrrrrl · 06/06/2010 19:33

I heart Matilda but a close friend just named her baby that.

(Doesnt rule it out entirely surely, mine can just be Matilda H).

DH really likes Philippa.

I love Philippa. Nice nicknames, pretty but not popular.

Tobermory · 06/06/2010 19:39

Great name!

SkaterGrrrrl · 06/06/2010 19:41

Rosalind is lovely.
Susannah, Catherine, Rebecca, Caroline,Jessica all 3 syllables.

Ineedsomesleep · 06/06/2010 20:09

We also have a one syllable last name and our DD is Emmeline, but was very nearly Juliet.

As for the pushing for your name while he is still reeling. Didn't quite work for me, DH got there first while I was still on the G&A.

DaydreamDolly · 06/06/2010 20:10

Oooh sorry to hijack this thread but was just looking and really like the name Evanie! Have never heard it before but it is really pretty! Does anyone know if it is pronounced
ee-van-ie
or

ev-an-ie
?

We have a Harriet and a Miriam (aka Hattie and Mim) so would definitely recommend those names!

We also considered Felicity (but with Fizzy as the nn), Bethany and Keziah (nn Kizzy).

I think all of your joint list are lovely. The only one I wouldn't personally use is Mirabel but only because it would make me sing, "Mother Mirabel's home movies..." and I'd drive myself insane!

sedgiebaby · 06/06/2010 21:14

samstown, this would have probably been from a french online resource, in which case I'd say (having checked with DH who is french speaking) eh-van-ee
