Okay, go easy on me, first baby and first appeal for feedback in this folder! We have our boys' names sorted but have been struggling with girls' names. We want a 3 syllable name as our surname is one syllable (It sounds a lot like Home).

Names I like but DH doesn't:

  • Victoria
  • Eleanor
  • Miranda

Names DH likes but I don't (no offence intended):

  • Penelope
  • Stephanie
  • Rhiannon

We both like:

Rosalind - means 'pretty rose' in Spanish or 'red dragon' in German, both work as we're expecting a little red head. Lots of lovely nicknames, Rosa, Rosie, Lindy etc
Mirabel - like Isabel which I love but not as ubiquitous
Felicity - nicknames Flick, Fee and it means happy
Jemima - nicknames Jem, Mimi
Helena - but not convinced this works as our surname begins with H

Potential middle names include Elizabeth, Zoe or Blake (a family surname).

Feedback appreciated

Sam: I'd say....'eh-van-ee'

weegiemum · 06/06/2010 21:28

We have a Katherine - pronounced with 3 syllables Kath-er-ine.

Mind you, she insists on Kathy these days.

theagedparent · 06/06/2010 21:31

Ottilie

I like Felicity, Jemima and Helena (or Helene - can't do accents but it has a grave accent on second e).

I love Matilda (obviously). I also like Francesca, Eliza, Adeline, Beatrice, Jessica, Harriet, Eloise, Gabrielle, Genevieve, Lydia, Tabitha, Madeleine, Ophelia, Sophia

I mostly like your names - unusually!
Have you considered also:
Antonia (ok, it's 4)
Marisa
Irina
Natasha
Rosalie

CantSupinate · 07/06/2010 05:08

I think an H name would be fine with your surname, but the problem with Helena is that there are at least 3 common ways to pronounce it -- it's a potential nuisance.

eatyourveg · 07/06/2010 08:59

Felicity Imogen Home has a good rhythm

Rosalind is the best from your list, IMO. Ever considered Juniper? 3 syllables, not common. Mariella is nice, too.

DastardlyandSmugly · 07/06/2010 11:33

Jemima nickname Mima is lovely. Quite like Felicity too.

sarararararah · 07/06/2010 11:37

Lydia?

SkaterGrrrrl · 07/06/2010 13:36

Thank you so much for all your replies, I'm glad our names are not all terible!

Congratulations on the birth of your Felicity, Tobermory!

Some lovey ideas here, Imogen and Juliet are fab (suppose she'd rapidly become Julie though). Mariella is also great, though am probably being influenced by my girl-crush on Mariella Frostrup.

Juniper is quirkily lovely, will run it by DH.

I'd name her Angela in a New York minute, but on these boards it seems to be considered an "elderly aunt" name...

Ahem, terible

Ah, I was coming on here to suggest Matilda, looks like that one's out.

SkaterGrrrrl · 07/06/2010 13:42

Oh god I did it again.

Liking Lydia, Fiona and Sophia. This is a lovely, helpful folder, not a folder-to-be-feared as rumour has it.

I know a couple of Juliets and neither of them get called Julie. One is Jools and the other is always Juliet.

Takver · 07/06/2010 14:57

I like Rosalind, always reminds me of As You Like It

Sylvia is another good classic 3 syllable name, and Sylvie is a pretty shortening. Valerie is also nice, IMO.

The Juliet I know (adult) is never called Julie either, always Juliet in full.
